    A solenoidal electron spectrometer for a precision measurement of the neutron β\beta-asymmetry with ultracold neutrons

    We describe an electron spectrometer designed for a precision measurement of the neutron β\beta-asymmetry with spin-polarized ultracold neutrons. The spectrometer consists of a 1.0-Tesla solenoidal field with two identical multiwire proportional chamber and plastic scintillator electron detector packages situated within 0.6-Tesla field-expansion regions.     Grey matter volume differences in the left caudate nucleus of people who stutter.

    The cause of stuttering has many theoretical explanations. A number of research groups have suggested changes in the volume and/or function of the striatum as a causal agent. Two recent studies in children and one in adults who stutter (AWS) report differences in striatal volume compared that seen in controls; however, the laterality and nature of this anatomical volume difference is not consistent across studies. The current study investigated whether a reduction in striatal grey matter volume, comparable to that seen in children who stutter (CWS), would be found in AWS. Such a finding would support claims that an anatomical striatal anomaly plays a causal role in stuttering. We used voxel-based morphometry to examine the structure of the striatum in a group of AWS and compared it to that in a group of matched adult control subjects. Results showed a statistically significant group difference for the left caudate nucleus, with smaller mean volume in the group of AWS. The caudate nucleus, one of three main structures within the striatum, is thought to be critical for the planning and modulation of movement sequencing. The difference in striatal volume found here aligns with theoretical accounts of stuttering, which suggest it is a motor control disorder that arises from deficient articulatory movement selection and sequencing. Whilst the current study provides further evidence of a striatal volume difference in stuttering at the group level compared to controls, the significant overlap between AWS and controls suggests this difference is unlikely to be diagnostic of stuttering

    Charm Contribution to the Structure Function in Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering

    The charm contribution to the structure functions of diffractive deep inelastic scattering is considered here within the context of the Ingelman-Schlein model. Numerical estimations of this contribution are made from parametrizations of the HERA data. Influence of the Pomeron flux factor is analized as well as the effect of the shape of the initial parton distribution employed in the calculations. The obtained results indicate that the charm contribution to diffractive deep inelastic process might be large enough to be measured in the HERA experiments.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures, to be published in Physical Review

    Bottom quark electroproduction in variable flavor number schemes

    Two variable flavor number schemes are used to describe bottom quark production in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering. In these schemes the coefficient functions are derived from mass factorization of the heavy quark coefficient functions presented in a fixed flavor number scheme. Also one has to construct a parton density set with five light flavors (u,d,s,c,b) out of a set which only contains four light flavors (u,d,s,c). In order αs2\alpha_s^2 the two sets are discontinuous at μ=mb\mu=m_b which follows from mass factorization of the heavy quark coefficient functions when it is carried out in the MSˉ{\bar {\rm MS}}-scheme. Both variable flavor number schemes give almost identical predictions for the bottom structure functions F2,bF_{2,b} and FL,bF_{L,b}. Also they both agree well with the corresponding results based on fixed order four-flavor perturbation theory over a wide range in xx and Q2Q^2.Comment: Latex with seventeen PostScript figure

    Heavy-quark mass dependence in global PDF analyses and 3- and 4-flavour parton distributions

    We study the sensitivity of our recent MSTW 2008 NLO and NNLO PDF analyses to the values of the charm- and bottom-quark masses, and we provide additional public PDF sets for a wide range of these heavy-quark masses. We quantify the impact of varying m_c and m_b on the cross sections for W, Z and Higgs production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We generate 3- and 4-flavour versions of the (5-flavour) MSTW 2008 PDFs by evolving the input PDFs and alpha_S determined from fits in the 5-flavour scheme, including the eigenvector PDF sets necessary for calculation of PDF uncertainties. As an example of their use, we study the difference in the Z total cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC in the 4- and 5-flavour schemes. Significant differences are found, illustrating the need to resum large logarithms in Q^2/m_b^2 by using the 5-flavour scheme. The 4-flavour scheme is still necessary, however, if cuts are imposed on associated (massive) b-quarks, as is the case for the experimental measurement of Z b bbar production and similar processes.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures.     Transformation of in-plane ρ(T)\rho (T) in YBa2Cu3O7δYBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} at fixed oxygen content

    This paper reveals the origin of variation in the magnitude and temperature dependence of the normal state resistivity frequently observed in different YBCO single crystal or thin film samples with the same TcT_{c}. We investigated temperature dependence of resistivity in YBa2Cu3O7δYBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} thin films with 7- δ=6.95\delta = 6.95 and 6.90, which were subjected to annealing in argon at 400-420 K (120140oC120-140^{o}C). Before annealing these films exhibited a non-linear ρab(T)\rho_{ab}(T), with a flattening below 230 K, similar to ρb(T)\rho_{b}(T) and ρab(T)\rho_{ab}(T) observed in untwinned and twinned YBCO crystals, respectively. For all films the annealing causes an increase of resistivity and a transformation of ρab(T)\rho_{ab}(T) from a non-linear dependence towards a more linear one (less flattening). In films with 7- δ=6.90\delta = 6.90 the increase of resistivity is also associated with an increase in TcT_{c}. We proposed the model that provides an explanation of these phenomena in terms of thermally activated redistribution of residual O(5) oxygens in the chain-layer of YBCO. Good agreement between the experimental data for ρab(t,T)\rho_{ab}(t,T), where t is the annealing time, and numerical calculations was obtained.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PR

    Macro and micro diversity of Clostridium difficile isolates from diverse sources and geographical locations.

    Clostridium difficile has emerged rapidly as the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrheal disease, with the temporal and geographical appearance of dominant PCR ribotypes such as 017, 027 and 078. Despite this continued threat, we have a poor understanding of how or why particular variants emerge and the sources of strains that dominate different human populations. We have undertaken a breadth genotyping study using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis of 385 C. difficile strains from diverse sources by host (human, animal and food), geographical locations (North America, Europe and Australia) and PCR ribotypes. Results identified 18 novel sequence types (STs) and 3 new allele sequences and confirmed the presence of five distinct clonal lineages generally associated with outbreaks of C. difficile infection in humans. Strains of animal and food origin were found of both ST-1 and ST-11 that are frequently associated with human disease. An in depth MLST analysis of the evolutionary distant ST-11/PCR ribotype 078 clonal lineage revealed that ST-11 can be found in alternative but closely related PCR ribotypes and PCR ribotype 078 alleles contain mutations generating novel STs. PCR ribotype 027 and 017 lineages may consist of two divergent subclades. Furthermore evidence of microdiversity was present within the heterogeneous clade 1. This study helps to define the evolutionary origin of dominant C. difficile lineages and demonstrates that C. difficile is continuing to evolve in concert with human activity

    Dynamics of Fermionic Four-Wave Mixing

    We study the dynamics of a beam of fermions diffracted off a density grating formed by fermionic atoms in the limit of a large grating. An exact description of the system in terms of particle-hole operators is developed. We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to quantitatively explore the Raman-Nath and the Bragg regimes of diffraction. We discuss the limits in diffraction efficiency resulting from the dephasing of the grating due the distribution of energy states occupied by the fermions. We propose several methods to overcome these limits, including the novel technique of ``atom echoes''.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
