Review of: \u3cem\u3eFrom Vision To Legacy\u3c/em\u3e—Lester and Sarah Gingerich
They married young and, within months, were stationed in Central America, as pioneers in 1961 for Amish Mennonite Aid missions. What began as relief work for hurricane victims turned into a 50-year saga, as relationships were forged, souls were saved, churches were planted, and grapefruit were bowled (page 261). From Vision To Legacy is an autobiographical life story of Lester and Sarah Gingerich, told in alternating streams of thought: his and hers. This spicy slice of Amish-Mennonite history opens with bits and pieces about ancestors immigrating from Germany but soon arrives at the narrators’ own births and lives from the mid-twentieth century on. The motivation for this book, as the title implies, seems to be primarily to inspire a missionary vision in readers, as the book explores the legacy left by one outstanding couple’s experiences. Studying the Transistor Using Wireless Epistemologies
The refinement of 802.11b is an essential prob- lem. Given the current status of autonomous theory, experts dubiously desire the simulation of the producer-consumer problem. We propose an approach for the visualization of sensor networks, which we call BREWIS
Mass-related inversion symmetry breaking and phonon self-energy renormalization in isotopically labeled AB-stacked bilayer graphene
A mass-related symmetry breaking in isotopically labeled bilayer graphene (2LG) was investigated during in-situ electrochemical charging of AB stacked (AB-2LG) and turbostratic (t-2LG) layers. The overlap of the two approaches, isotopic labeling and electronic doping, is powerful tool and allows to tailor, independently and distinctly, the thermal-related and transport-related phenomena in materials, since one can impose different symmetries for electrons and phonons in these systems. Variations in the system's phonon self-energy renormalizations due to the charge distribution and doping changes could be analyzed separately for each individual layer. Symmetry arguments together with first-order Raman spectra show that the single layer graphene (1LG), which is directly contacted to the electrode, has a higher concentration of charge carriers than the second graphene layer, which is not contacted by the electrode. These different charge distributions are reflected and demonstrated by different phonon self-energy renormalizations of the G modes for AB-2LG and for t-2LG.Czech Republic. A Propensity for n-omega-Amino Acids in Thermally-Altered Antarctic Meteorites
Carbonaceous meteorites are known to contain a wealth of indigenous organic molecules, including amino acids, which suggests that these meteorites could have been an important source of prebiotic organic material during the origins of life on Earth and possibly elsewhere. We report the detection of extraterrestrial amino acids in thermally-altered type 3 CV and CO carbonaceous chondrites and ureilites recovered from Antarctica. The amino acid concentrations of the thirteen Antarctic meteorites were generally less abundant than in more amino acid-rich CI, CM, and CR carbonaceous chondrites that experienced much lower temperature aqueous alteration on their parent bodies. In contrast to low-temperature aqueously-altered meteorites that show complete structural diversity in amino acids formed predominantly by Strecker-cyanohydrin synthesis, the thermally-altered meteorites studied here are dominated by small, straight-chain, amine terminal (n-omega-amino) amino acids that are not consistent with Strecker formation. The carbon isotopic ratios of two extraterrestrial n-omega-amino acids measured in one of the CV chondrites are consistent with C-13-depletions observed previously in hydrocarbons produced by Fischer-Tropsch type reactions. The predominance of n-omega-amino acid isomers in thermally-altered meteorites hints at cosmochemical mechanisms for the preferential formation and preservation of a small subset of the possible amino acids

Perspectives on Precision Health Among Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities and the Physicians That Serve Them.
BACKGROUND: In order for precision health to address health disparities, engagement of diverse racial/ethnic minority communities and the physicians that serve them is critical. METHODS: A community-based participatory research approach with mixed methods was employed to gain a deeper understanding of precision health research and practice among American Indian, African American, Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese groups and physicians that serve these communities. A survey assessed demographics and opinions of precision health, genetic testing, and precision health research. Focus groups (n=12) with each racial/ethnic minority group and physicians further explored attitudes about these topics. RESULTS: One hundred community members (American Indian [n=17], African American [n=13], Chinese [n=17], Latino [n=27], and Vietnamese [n=26]) and 14 physicians completed the survey and participated in the focus groups. Familiarity with precision health was low among community members and high among physicians. Most groups were enthusiastic about the approach, especially if it considered influences on health in addition to genes (eg, environmental, behavioral, social factors). Significant concerns were expressed by African American and American Indian participants about precision health practice and research based on past abuses in biomedical research. In addition, physician and community members shared concerns such as security and confidentiality of genetic information, cost and affordability of genetic tests and precision medicine, discrimination and disparities, distrust of medical and research and pharmaceutical institutions, language barriers, and physicians specialty. CONCLUSIONS: Engagement of racial/ethnic minority communities and the providers who serve them is important for advancing a precision health approach to addressing health disparities
Successful Combination of Olaparib and 225Ac-Dotatate in a Patient with Neuroendocrine Tumor G3 and BRCA Mutation
Based on the results of the NETTER-1 trial, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with Lutetium-177 (177Lu) – DOTATATE is authorized for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) grade 1 (G1) and grade 2 (G2) of the intestine. After the failure of 177Lu-DOTATATE therapy, targeted alpha-particle therapy (TAT) may be a possible treatment option. Here, we present a patient with cancer of unknown primary NET G2 later G3. The patient was referred to our hospital with urosepsis due to a second-degree urinary retention. After stent insertion, a contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a huge pelvic tumor without metastases. Initially, the patient had undergone surgical treatment. Later the patient developed liver metastasis and was treated by 177Lu-DOTATATE therapy and four lines of systemic therapy. A disease progression was observed and with the knowledge of a germline BRCA1 mutation, the patient was treated with TAT (Actinium-225 [225Ac]-DOTATATE) combined with olaparib. The patient achieved a significant treatment response for 12 months indicating that a combination therapy with an alpha emitter and olaparib demands further investigations in clinical trials

Humankind has had a profound influence on the biosphere, manifested as global climate and land use changes, and extensive urbanization in response to a growing population. The challenges we face to supply food, energy, and clean water while maintaining and improving the health of our population and ecosystems are significant. Given the extensive influence of microorganisms across our biosphere, we propose that a coordinated, cross-disciplinary effort is required to understand, predict, and harness microbiome function. From the parallelization of gene function testing to precision manipulation of genes, communities, and model ecosystems and development of novel analytical and simulation approaches, we outline strategies to move microbiome research into an era of causality. These efforts will improve prediction of ecosystem response and enable the development of new, responsible, microbiome-based solutions to significant challenges of our time.E.L.B. is supported by the Genomes-to-Watersheds Subsurface Biogeochemical

volonté d’imprégnation de l’existence humaine par l’activité de l’architecte;
