The Rolf of Test Chips in Coordinating Logic and Circuit Design and Layout Aids for VLSI

    Get PDF
This paper emphasizes the need for multipurpose test chips and comprehensive procedures for use in supplying accurate input data to both logic and circuit simulators and chip layout aids. It is shown that the location of test structures within test chips is critical in obtaining representative data, because geometrical distortions introduced during the photomasking process can lead to significant intrachip parameter variations. In order to transfer test chip designs quickly, accurately, and economically, a commonly accepted portable chip layout notation and commonly accepted parametric tester language are needed. In order to measure test chips more accurately and more rapidly, parametric testers with improved architecture need to be developed in conjunction with innovative test structures with on-chip signal conditioning

Optimal Levels of Inputs to Control Listeria monocytogenes Contamination at a Smoked Fish Plant

Reducing the incidence of listeriosis from contaminated food has significant social health benefits, but reduction requires the use of additional or higher quality inputs at higher costs. We estimate the impact of three inputs in a food processing plant on the prevalence of L. monocytogenes contaminated finished cold smoked salmon. These three inputs were non-contamination of the raw fish fillets, non-contamination of the plant environment, and rate of glove changes on workers. We then estimate the levels of these inputs to use such that the marginal cost of these inputs become equal to the increased social health benefit of reduction in human listeriosis. Since the costs of these inputs are borne by the food processing plant, which may not be able to secure a higher product price because of asymmetric information, we show how social sub-optimal use of these inputs may result.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

Sentience: All or none or matter of degree?

    Get PDF
The question of whether fish feel pain is muddied by anthropomorphic thinking. Comparing biological phenomena in two species should be informed by the criteria for good animal models: face validity, construct validity and predictive validity. Viewed through this lens, we argue that fish do feel pain and may possess some level of sentience. Evolutionary relatedness, hence similarities and differences between species (fish and humans in this case), are not about black vs. white but about shades of grey

Optical air data systems and methods

Systems and methods for sensing air outside a moving aircraft are presented. In one embodiment, a system includes a laser for generating laser energy. The system also includes one or more transceivers for projecting the laser energy as laser radiation to the air. Subsequently, each transceiver receives laser energy as it is backscattered from the air. A computer processes signals from the transceivers to distinguish molecular scattered laser radiation from aerosol scattered laser radiation and determines one or more air parameters based on the scattered laser radiation. Such air parameters may include air speed, air pressure, air temperature and aircraft orientation angle, such as yaw, angle of attack and sideslip

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the needs of San Juan County, Utah , in regard to an overall program of vocational education including ancillary services and new facilities for an area vocational center. Literature was reviewed concerning the need for vocational education, recent developments and trends in vocational programs, and other refinements in educational theory which influence instruction . Several groups of people were surveyed to determine the needs and interests of area residents with special attention given toward the Navajo Indian population. The overall program which was developed incorporates aspects of the career education theme as it relates to vocational awareness and exploration. Suggestions are made regarding ancillary services such as counseling , inservice training, advisory committees, and promotion. Part II of the study is the educational specifications for a new building to house the vocational program which was developed . Facilities for programs in mobile units are also included

Six-locus high resolution HLA haplotype frequencies derived from mixed-resolution DNA typing for the entire US donor registry

AbstractWe have calculated six-locus high resolution HLA A∼C∼B∼DRB3/4/5∼DRB1∼DQB1 haplotype frequencies using all Be The Match® Registry volunteer donors typed by DNA methods at recruitment. Mixed resolution HLA typing data was inputted to a modified expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm in the form of genotype lists generated by interpretation of primary genomic typing data to the IMGT/HLA v3.4.0 allele list. The full cohort consists of 6.59million subjects categorized at a broad race level. Overall 25.8% of the individuals were typed at the C locus, and 5.2% typed at the DQB1 locus, while all individuals were typed for A, B, DRB1. We also present a subset of 2.90million subjects with detailed race/ethnic information mapped to 21 population subgroups, 64.1% of which have primary DNA typing data across at least A, B, and DRB1 loci. Sample sizes at the detailed race level range from 1,242,890 for European Caucasian to 1,376 Alaskan Native or Aleut. Genetic distance measurements show high levels of HLA genetic divergence among the 21 detailed race categories, especially among the eight Asian–American populations. These haplotype frequencies will be used to improve match predictions for donor selection algorithms for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and improve the accuracy in modeling registry match rates

Spirituality as a coping strategy: a case study of teachers in a public school in KwaZulu-Natal.

Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. For years the teaching profession has been universally recognized as one of the most challenging working environments for teachers (Arokium, 2010; Behera & Dash, 2015). By no means is South Africa an exception, particularly with public school teachers facing challenges that appear to continually propagate. The South African education system still falls prey to the ghosts of Apartheid’s past. Even today, traces of historical inequality perpetuate a challenging and more stressful reality for many public South African schools. Although existing literature has considered various coping strategies employed by teachers, spirituality has not been extensively explored. Particularly in relation to how it may be utilised by teachers in their experiences of work. The current study used a qualitative research method to explore the lived experiences of teachers’ in relation to spirituality and the role it plays in their work life. A case study methodology was employed, placing the teachers at Primary School X as the unit of analysis for this study. Data was obtained from six semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that, similarly to existing evidence, South African public school teachers still largely experience their work environments as challenging. Consistently mentioned issues included overcrowded classrooms, difficulties with the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) as well as the sensitive social issues routinely experienced by learners. Overall, the teachers have managed to deal with most challenges strategically however, in instances where personal/professional control over the situation completely lacked, the teachers turned to spirituality as a resource to meaningfully deal with such challenges. For the teachers at Primary School X, the practice of spirituality facilitated a process of positive meaning making that allowed for a more constructive appraisal of difficult realities. An inclusive set of values, beliefs and assumptions informed the reinterpretation of the teaching environment and positively influenced their work function. The challenges faced by South African public school teachers are unignorable and should be treated as a priority of systemic rescue. This study highlights how spirituality was used as a means of personal strength and should be explored further to understand its unique contribution, both personally and professionally for South African teachers
