Growth and characterization of materials for tunable lasers in the near infrared spectral region
During this reporting period, work proceeded in two directions. The first was the development of crystal growth procedures for rare earth doped LiYF4 crystals. The procedures for growth and pre-growth treatment of starting materials for undoped LiYF4 crystals were established and good optical quality materials were grown. A significant amount of time was spent trying to establish the optimum growth parameters for Yb(3+)-doped crystals. Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to obtain large size boules of high optical quality crystals of LiYF4 with doping concentrations of Yb(3+) of several percent. Because of these problems, this research is to be changed to attempt doping with other trivalent rare earth ions such as Ho, Er, and Tm. The second research area was investigating the potential of LiNbO3:Mg,Cr and LiNbO3:Mg,Cr,Yb as possible laser materials. The results are summarized

A method for growing crystals of LiYF4 using an HF pretreatment and purification system is described. In addition, spectrum analyses were performed on eight crystals of type LiNbO3:Mg,Cr,RE, which were grown in order to investigate the use of lithium niobate as a laser host material
Regional differences in the coupling between resting cerebral blood flow and metabolism may indicate action preparedness as a default state.
Although most functional neuroimaging studies examine task effects, interest intensifies in the "default" resting brain. Resting conditions show consistent regional activity, yet oxygen extraction fraction constancy across regions. We compared resting cerebral metabolic rates of glucose (CMRgl) measured with 18F-labeled 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose to cerebral blood flow (CBF) 15O-H2O measures, using the same positron emission tomography scanner in 2 samples (n = 60 and 30) of healthy right-handed adults. Region to whole-brain ratios were calculated for 35 standard regions of interest, and compared between CBF and CMRgl to determine perfusion relative to metabolism. Primary visual and auditory areas showed coupling between CBF and CMRgl, limbic and subcortical regions--basal ganglia, thalamus and posterior fossa structures--were hyperperfused, whereas association cortices were hypoperfused. Hyperperfusion was higher in left than right hemisphere for most cortical and subcallosal limbic regions, but symmetric in cingulate, basal ganglia and somatomotor regions. Hyperperfused regions are perhaps those where activation is anticipated at short notice, whereas downstream cortical modulatory regions have longer "lead times" for deployment. The novel observation of systematic uncoupling of CBF and CMRgl may help elucidate the potential biological significance of the "default" resting state. Whether greater left hemispheric hyperperfusion reflects lateral dominance needs further examination
Cytopathology of Thyroid Nodules
Fine needle aspiradon biopsy is a simple and accurate means of obtaining a tissue diagnosis for a thyroid nodule. Our experience with 3,000 such biopsies and 242 surgically proven cancers has enabled us to characterize the cytologic presentations of the common nodular thyroid diseases. We can readily identify nodular goiter and papillary, poorly differentiated follicular, medullary, anaplastic, and metastatic cancers. Benign follicular neoplasms and well-differentiated follicular cancers cannot be separated with great accuracy, but useful predictions can be made. Care is required to recognize the cellular abnormalities of autoimmune thyroiditis and to diagnose the coexistence of this disease with malignant lymphoma
What Factors Predict Upper Body Push to Pull Ratios in Professional Firefighters?
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 1605-1614, 2020. Shoulder joint injuries are common for professional firefighters. A potential cause of shoulder injury is an imbalance between anterior (push) and posterior (pull) shoulder joint musculature. Understanding what contributes to these imbalances may help to identify areas needing improvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate different push to pull (P2P) ratios and the relationships among common upper body fitness assessments, body composition, and push to pull (P2P) ratios in firefighters. Thirty-three professional firefighters completed the following testing protocol: one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press, pull-up repetitions to failure, push-up repetitions to failure, and a body composition assessment. The endurance P2P (eP2P) was computed by dividing the number of push-up by pull-up repetitions, while strength P2P (sP2P) was the relative 1RM divided by pull-up repetitions. Bivariate relationships among variables were assessed with correlation coefficients and linear regression assessed association between eP2P and sP2P (p ≤ 0.05). The sP2P and eP2P were not associated (R2 = 0.032, p = 0.99). Strength P2P was related with bench press 1RM (r = 0.80) and push-ups (r = 0.40). Endurance P2P was related with pull-up repetitions (r = -0.62), body fat percentage (r = 0.40), and fat mass index (r = 0.34). The results of the present study suggest sP2P and eP2P ratios should not be used interchangeably. To improve sP2P and eP2P for firefighters, it is recommended to improve the strength of anterior and posterior upper body musculature, respectively, and reduce total body fat mass
Impaired processing of facial happiness, with or without awareness, in developmental prosopagnosia
Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is associated with severe, lifelong deficits in face recognition, with such cases often cited as support for a dissociation between the processing of facial identity and emotion. Here we examine the evidence against this dissociation and propose that the processing of facial happiness, either with or without awareness, is actually integrated within the same neural network involved in facial identity recognition. We also test this hypothesis on a group of DP cases and neurotypical controls (NT) by adapting them to expressionless neutral faces, intact happy faces and hybrid faces. Despite these hybrid faces being explicitly identified as expressionless due to their higher spatial frequencies taken from a neutral face, their low spatial frequencies convey happy facial expressions that participants are unaware of. After adaptation, participants were asked to judge the facial expressions of face stimuli that were morphed incrementally in varying degrees of sad through to happy. Both groups exhibited emotion adaptation aftereffects to the intact happy faces, although this effect was smaller in DP. Whereas NT produced emotion adaptation aftereffects without awareness of the happy emotion in the hybrid faces; as a group, those with DP did not. Furthermore, our DP cases also exhibited deficits in judging the emotion of the happiest morphed test faces. Our results indicate that the processing of happy facial expressions, with or without awareness, is likely integrated within the face recognition network. We hypothesise that the previously identified abnormalities in the fusiform gyrus in those with DP is the most likely structure responsible for these deficits.MOE (Min. of Education, S’pore)Accepted versio
