    Mechanical Effects in PEM Fuel Cell: Application to Modeling of Assembly Procedure

    Mechanical effects can influence significantly electrical performance and life time of PEM fuel cells. A linear elasticplastic 2D model of fuel cell with hardening is used for modeling of assembly procedure of fuel cells. The model simulates mechanical behavior of the main components of real fuel cell (the membrane, the gas diffusion layers, the graphite plates, and the seal joints) and clamping elements (the steel plates, the bolts, the nuts). The stress and plastic deformation in MEA have been calculated using ABAQUS code. The results are presented on the local and the global scales with respect to the realistic clamping conditions. The first one corresponds to the single tooth/channel structure. The global scale deals with features of the entire cell and takes into account the border effects, in particular the influence of seal joints

    Neutron Detection in the A2 Collaboration Experiment on Neutral Pion Photo-production on Neutron

    Neutron detection is of crucial importance for the neutral pion photo-production study on a neutron target that now is in progress at MAMI. Two electro-magnetic calorimeters, based on NaI and BaF2 crystals, are used in the A2 experiment. While these calorimeters are optimized for pion decay photon detection, they have a reason able efficiency for neutron detection also. The paper describes the method, which has been used to measure this efficiency using the same data taken for pion photo-production study on deuterium target with tagged photon been of 800 MeV maximal energy. The detection efficiency is a rising function of neutron momentum that reaches 40% near 1 GeV/c

    SiPM technology applied to radiation sensor development

    The Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) being yet in its infancy, a full protocol for the sensor characterization has been developed and implemented at the Physics Department of Universita\u2019 dell\u2019Insubria. Sensors from different producers have been analyzed and compared, in view of the integration in the instruments for radiation detection.     We have measured the ratio σ(e+eπ+πγ)/σ(e+eμ+μγ)\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-\gamma), with the KLOE detector at DAΦ\PhiNE for a total integrated luminosity of \sim 240 pb1^{-1}. From this ratio we obtain the cross section σ(e+eπ+π)\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-). From the cross section we determine the pion form factor Fπ2|F_\pi|^2 and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly aμa_\mu for 0.592<Mππ<0.9750.592<M_{\pi\pi}<0.975 GeV, Δππaμ\Delta^{\pi\pi} a_\mu= (385.1±1.1stat±2.7sys+theo)×1010({\rm 385.1\pm1.1_{stat}\pm2.7_{sys+theo}})\times10^{-10}. This result confirms the current discrepancy between the Standard Model calculation and the experimental measurement of the muon anomaly.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, minor text corrections, one table added, version to appear on Physics Letters

    KLOE results in kaon physics and prospects for KLOE-2

    The phi-factory DAPHNE offers a possibility to select pure kaon beams, charged and neutral ones. In particular, neutral kaons from phi->KS KL are produced in pairs and the detection of a KS (KL) tags the presence of a KL (KS). This allows to perform precise measurements of kaon properties by means of KLOE detector. Another advantage of a phi-factory consists in fact that the neutral kaon pairs are produced in a pure quantum state (J^(PC) = 1^(--)), which allowsto investigate CP and CPT symmetries via quantum interference effects, as well as the basic principles of quantum mechanics.A review of the most recent results of the KLOE experiment at DAPHNE using pure kaon beams or via quantum interferometry is presented together with prospects for kaon physics at KLOE-2.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, From Phi To Psi 2011 conference, to be published in Nuclear Physics B (Proceedings Supplements
