Cytochrome c 6-like protein as a putative donor of electrons to photosystem I in the cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. PCC 7119
Most organisms performing oxygenic photosynthesis contain either cytochrome c 6 or plastocyanin, or both, to transfer electrons from cytochrome b 6-f to photosystem I. Even though plastocyanin has superseded cytochrome c 6 along evolution, plants contain a modified cytochrome c 6, the so called cytochrome c 6A, whose function still remains unknown. In this article, we describe a second cytochrome c 6 (the so called cytochrome c 6-like protein), which is found in some cyanobacteria but is phylogenetically more related to plant cytochrome c 6A than to cyanobacterial cytochrome c 6. In this article, we conclude that the cytochrome c 6-like protein is a putative electron donor to photosystem I, but does play a role different to that of cytochrome c 6 and plastocyanin as it cannot accept electrons from cytochrome f. The existence of this third electron donor to PSI could explain why some cyanobacteria are able to grow photoautotrophically in the absence of both cytochrome c 6 and plastocyanin. In any way, the Cyt c 6-like protein from Nostoc sp. PCC 7119 would be potentially utilized for the biohydrogen production, using cell-free photosystem I catalytic nanoparticles.
Remaining useful life and fault detection models for high voltage electrical connectors focused on predictive maintenance
In recent years, industries have chosen to invest in technology with the aim of making their processes more efficient and thus offering market products of higher quality. Nowadays it is very common for companies to use special systems to predict failures and avoid unexpected delays, reduction of costs, etc. SBI Connectors, along with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, have been
collaborating to develop research projects for more than 10 years. As a result of the collaboration with the university, patents and international publications have been generated, which have helped to situate and reinforce SBI Connectors leadership in the international market while offering an image of scientific-technical credibility. This research is carried out, with the collaboration of SBI connectors and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, in order to develop the Smartconnector project (within the Retos de Colaboración Spanish research frame). The thesis proposed by the author is dedicated to develop and validate RUL (Remaining Useful Life) and fault detection approaches for electrical substation connectors. The RUL approach proposed in this work is based
on a simple and accurate model of the degradation with time of the electrical resistance of the connector (main health indicator),
which has two parameters, whose values are identified from on-line acquired data. Next, the fault detection chapter is divided into two parts. The first part presents an on-line condition monitoring method to predict early failures in power connectors from on-line acquired data in conjunction with another parametric degradation model of the resistance of the connector, whose parameters are identified by means of the Markov chain Monte Carlo stochastic method. The second part presents, analyzes and compares the
performance of three simple and effective methods for online determination of the State of Health (SoH) of power connectors with low computational requirements. The proposed approaches are based on monitoring the evolution of the connectors’ electrical resistance, which determines the degradation trajectory. Furthermore, this work includes an in-depth study of the temperature
dependence of the electrical contact resistance (ECR). To analyze and validate results presented in this work, data is acquired in real time, including main parameters such as the electrical current and voltage drop across the terminals of the connector,
Moral Ecology of a Forest
Forests are alive, filled with rich, biologically complex life forms and the interrelationships of multiple species and materials. Vulnerable to a host of changing conditions in this global era, forests are in peril as never before. New markets in carbon and environmental services attract speculators. In the name of conservation, such speculators attempt to undermine local land control in these desirable areas.
Moral Ecology of a Forest provides an ethnographic account of conservation politics, particularly the conflict between Western conservation and Mayan ontological ecology. The difficult interactions of the Maya of central Quintana Roo, Mexico, for example, or the Mayan communities of the Sain Ka’an Biosphere, demonstrate the clashing interests with Western biodiversity conservation initiatives. The conflicts within the forest of Quintana Roo represent the outcome of nature in this global era, where the forces of land grabbing, conservation promotion and organizations, and capitalism vie for control of forests and land.
Forests pose living questions. In addition to the ever-thrilling biology of interdependent species, forests raise questions in the sphere of political economy, and thus raise cultural and moral questions. The economic aspects focus on the power dynamics and ideological perspectives over who controls, uses, exploits, or preserves those life forms and landscapes. The cultural and moral issues focus on the symbolic meanings, forms of knowledge, and obligations that people of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and classes have constructed in relation to their lands. The Maya Forest of Quintana Roo is a historically disputed place in which these three questions come together
The main objective of this research is based on finding out some assertive and robust Photoplethysmogram’s PPG & Electrocardiogram’s ECG blood pressure-related parameters by the implementation of a novel method with innovations in signal processing and analysis. The biomedical ECG and PPG signals are recorded using a mobile monitor CardioQVark. To increase the cuffless blood pressure measurement accuracy, a technique that involves not only the ECG and PPG joint parameters extraction but also some individual PPG’s morphology features, is proposed in this work. Firstly, the biomedical ECG and PPG signals are time–frequency filtered. Secondly, some novel parameters from the morphology of photoplethysmogram signal, which may be correlated with blood pressure, are considered in addition to the pulse transit time. Additionally, a neural network is built to determine the relationship between the estimated and reference blood pressure. Finally, the correlation coefficient and regression line are obtained to evaluate the feasibility.
TBL1 is required for the mesenchymal phenotype of transformed breast cancer cells
The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and its reversion (MET) are related to tumor cell dissemination and migration, tumor circulating cell generation, cancer stem cells, chemoresistance, and metastasis formation. To identify chromatin and epigenetic factors possibly involved in the process of EMT, we compare the levels of expression of epigenetic genes in a transformed human breast epithelial cell line (HMEC-RAS) versus a stable clone of the same cell line expressing the EMT master regulator ZEB1 (HMEC-RAS-ZEB1). One of the factors strongly induced in the HMEC-RAS-ZEB1 cells was Transducin beta-like 1 (TBL1), a component of the NCoR complex, which has both corepressor and coactivator activities. We show that TBL1 interacts with ZEB1 and that both factors cooperate to repress the promoter of the epithelial gene E-cadherin (CDH1) and to autoactivate the ZEB1 promoter. Consistent with its central role, TBL1 is required for mesenchymal phenotypes of transformed breast epithelial and breast cancer cell lines of the claudin-low subtype. Importantly, a high expression of the TBL1 gene correlates with poor prognosis and increased proportion of metastasis in breast cancer patients, indicating that the level of TBL1 expression can be used as a prognostic marker.Ministerio de EconomÃa y Competitividad BFU2014-53543-P, BFU2017-85420-RJunta de AndalucÃa BIO-32
