Examining the Impact of Innovation Forms on Sustainable Economic Performance: The Influence of Family Management

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to explore the effect that innovation, as a potential source of sustained competitive advantage and firm growth, has on the achievement of sustainable economic performance. In particular, this paper empirically examines the influence of four innovation forms (intramural R&D, extramural R&D, product innovation, and process innovation) on firms’ sustainable economic performance, considering the moderating effect of family involvement in management. To test the hypotheses, random-effects regression analyses are applied to a longitudinal sample of 598 Spanish private manufacturing firms throughout the 2006–2015 period. The results show a negative effect of intramural and extramural R&D on sustainable economic performance and a positive effect of process innovation on sustainable economic performance. Moreover, a reinforced relationship between process innovation and sustainable economic performance is also revealed when family involvement in management acts as a moderator. The findings make several contributions to research and practice

From underdevelopment to overdevelopment in ZoMeCS: the potency of territory (territory = milieu * population)

Costa del Sol is a paradigmatic example of how a touristic theme park is being transformed -for the least fifty years- in an urban space with more diverse uses. We have called intentionally this area ZoMeCS, Zona Metropolitana Costa del Sol (Metropolitan Area of Costa del Sol). ZoMeCS is a place that creates life forms specific to its territory. We understand that its nature and its internal and external territorial linkages - connections that go beyond of the purely spatial-, make it a very modern urban space itself which links the tourism and its consequences with contemporary life. We make a reflection about the potential of ZoMeCS as laboratory of experimentation and research of contemporaneous milieu and population.Peer Reviewe

Systematic Study of the Content of Phytochemicals in Fresh and Fresh-Cut Vegetables

    Get PDF
Vegetables and fruits have beneficial properties for human health, because of the presence of phytochemicals, but their concentration can fluctuate throughout the year. A systematic study of the phytochemical content in tomato, eggplant, carrot, broccoli and grape (fresh and fresh-cut) has been performed at different seasons, using liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. It was observed that phenolic acids (the predominant group in carrot, eggplant and tomato) were found at higher concentrations in fresh carrot than in fresh-cut carrot. However, in the case of eggplant, they were detected at a higher content in fresh-cut than in fresh samples. Regarding tomato, the differences in the content of phenolic acids between fresh and fresh-cut were lower than in other matrices, except in winter sampling, where this family was detected at the highest concentration in fresh tomato. In grape, the flavonols content (predominant group) was higher in fresh grape than in fresh-cut during all samplings. The content of glucosinolates was lower in fresh-cut broccoli than in fresh samples in winter and spring sampling, although this trend changes in summer and autumn. In summary, phytochemical concentration did show significant differences during one-year monitoring, and the families of phytochemicals presented different behaviors depending on the matrix studied

The authors express thanks to Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Granada, Spain; to the actors and actresses who played the role in each video; and to the professional technicians who produced and edited the videos. Objectives: Pharmaceutical Care is a subject within the Pharmacy degree that can not only be taught using theoretical frameworks but also requires new teaching tools, like a simulated educational video. The objective of this study is to produce simulated patientbased videos as a supplementary teaching tool to deepen the understanding and knowledge of Professional Pharmacy Services. Design: Several videos based on simulated patient cases of the most prevalent Professional Pharmacy Services (medication adherence, medication review with follow-up, dispensing and minor ailment service) were produced and used as a teaching tool within a theoretical lesson in undergraduate and professional training. Methods: A prospective study was performed in two groups: undergraduate students and professional pharmacist. Their opinion about these Educational Videos was evaluated through a questionnaire on a 1-10 scale. Frequencies mean ± standard deviation, median and internal consistency of the survey were analyzed. Values of p<0.05 were considered significant. Results: Undergraduate students (n=90) and professional pharmacists from Master classes (n=59) completed the questionnaire (Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.8). Statistically significant differences were found in some relevant items between both groups of students, related to the content’s clarity (9.12±1.11 vs 9.72±0.57; p=0.003), simulation of reality (6.60±2.26 vs 8.47±1.23; p<0.001) and correspondence with theory (9.23±1.07 vs 9.64±0.68; p=0.037). General score and most items were rated higher by professional pharmacists than undergraduate students (8.19±0.96 vs 8.84±1.10; p=0.001). Conclusion: Educational videos are an adequate tool for teaching Pharmaceutical Care, adding new layers of learning to Professional Pharmacy Services

Design of lightweight concrete with olive biomass bottom ash for use in buildings

    Get PDF
The ash generated during the combustion of biomass in electricity generation plants is a waste that has increased considerably in recent years, and whose management constitutes an environmental problem. In this regard, the recovery of biomass bottom ash as a partial replacement of natural materials for use in different civil engineering applications, as well as for the manufacture of construction materials, has been the subject of numerous studies that have shown its technical feasibility. However, for its application in the development of new sustainable materials, with thermal insulation properties, it is necessary to expand our existing knowledge of it. In this study, the use of bottom ash from original and processed biomass bottom ash in the manufacture of lightweight concrete, as a replacement for sand (15%–25%) and expanded clay (25%–35%), has been evaluated. In addition, after subjecting the ash to a grinding process, it was also incorporated into the concrete by replacing cement. The physical, mechanical, thermal and durability properties were evaluated according to regulations and the results showed that the thermal treatment applied to biomass bottom ash improved the mechanical performance of lightweight concrete. Likewise, thermal conductivity was reduced by up to 43%, which allows these concretes to be used as insulating materials in buildings. Therefore, this study shows the possibility of recovering biomass bottom ash in the manufacture of lightweight concrete for use in construction.Valorization of biomass bottom ash in sustainable construction applications (1264457- R) – BIOCEM, carried out by the University of Cordoba and the University of Granada within the Application for grants for R&D&I projects in the framework of the operational program ERDF Andalusia 2014–202

[EN] Online reviews in the e-commerce and eWOM communities play a key role in consumers’ purchase decisions. In this regard, one concern is the growth of fake reviews, which directly targets the credibility of platforms and the trust of users. To address this issue, we apply Transformers-based NLP models to better understand the scope of fake reviews within the Amazon marketplace across different product categories. Our methodology applies two different transformer models to Amazon online reviews for (1) generating fake reviews and (2) classifying online reviews as fake or truthful. This work contributes to the literature on understanding the credibility of online review. Our results show that most of the fake reviews are located in non-verified purchase reviews. Considering the different product categories, we found that the percentage of fake reviews is 3 times higher for the experience products and 8 times higher for the experience products for non-verified purchase reviews with respect to the fake reviews found in verified-purchase reviews. This work was supported by the project Aplicación de Redes Generativas Antagónicas para Combatir la Manipulación de Clientes Online (REACT) Ref. Assessment of highway infrastructure projects in Latin America and PerĂş from the competences point of view

    Get PDF
It is stressed that Latin America and Peru should become more competitive. Under the actual development scenarios, attention to competences of programme managers and project managers related to public transportation infrastructure projects has risen substantially. An inefficient bureaucratic system is related with deficiencies of people skills and competences. On the other hand, an excellent system demands quality of the system and quality of people working in it. Thus, it is important to have excellence in administration and excellent administrators in the public sector. Three main lacking elements have been identified: i) lack of good education; ii) absence of fair salaries in the public sector; and iii) lack of incentives. Many misconceptions and disputed consequences have been observed and analyzed. It is clear that there is lack of competence among infrastructure transport project managers and teams, which causes trouble with the main goal of Peru getting benefits from these investments and achieving sustainable development. Furthermore, the right way to achieve these benefits is through a new model of education for project managers and programme managers in Peru. This education should be based more on competences than on qualifications. Thus, the International Project Management Association (IPMA) competence baseline, which is the standard that best fits to these needs, needs to be implemented to achieve the real contribution and benefits of these projects to society

Pharmaceutical Care is a subject within the Pharmacy Degree that is taught using theoretical and practical classes. When COVID-19 appeared, Faculty of Pharmacy had to change its way of teaching and learning to online classes. Our aim is to assess the impact of COVID-19 situation on practical classes in Pharmaceutical Care. A prospective study was performed by undergraduate students from Pharmaceutical Care subject. Students attended to 2-day practical classes and were assessed through an evaluative workbook. Undergraduate students (n=390) obtained a score of 8.4±0.8 in practical classes, being higher in face-to-face sessions than online sessions, but not significant differences among both methodologies. The higher score was for the session of minor ailment services (9.3±1.3) and the lower for Personalized Medication Dosage (7.0±1.6) and similar in both scenarios. 59% of students obtained more than 8 score in the global punctuation, being higher in in-face-to-face practical classes. This study showed that learning in health care can be guided and evaluated through an online method. Adapt to new technologies, prevent vulnerable students from being left behind, as well as working on cross-cutting skills at a distance, are some of the challenges of higher education in times of COVID-19
