In Spanish, combining an indefinite plural article and a cardinal number leads to an approximative interpretation similar to that provided by approximators like ‘approximately’. In this paper, we advance a syntactic and semantic analysis of these structures. We show that the construction shares a number of properties with structures containing explicit approximative elements, so it justified to assume that a particular constituent contributes the approximative meaning. We propose that an approximative morpheme Approx is combined with the cardinal number; the morphological realization of this morpheme is as the plural affix on the indefinite article. We advance a denotation for Approx, and elaborate the necessary assumptions on the functioning of numerals for our analysis to work at a general level. Prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in patients receiving chemotherapy

    Get PDF
Oral mucositis is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy). It is an inflammatory process that affects the mucosa of the oral cavity, giving rise to erythematous areas in combination with ulcers that can reach a large size. The true importance of oral mucositis is the complications it causes ' fundamentally intense pain associated to the oral ulcers, and the risk of overinfection. This in turn may require reduction or even suspension of the antineoplastic treatment, with the risk of seriously worsening the patient prognosis. This points to the importance of establishing therapeutic tools of use in the prevention and/or treatment of mucositis. The present study offers a literature review of all the articles published over the last 10 years referred to the prevention and/or treatment of oral mucositis associated to chemotherapy

    Multi-domain VNF mapping algorithms

5G technologies are taking benefit of the Network Function Virtualization to achieve more flexible deployments. This new paradigm allows the resource sharing between operators in federated environments thanks to the decomposition of services into virtual network functions connected together composing a "service function chain". This work proposes algorithms to solve the placement of such chains in federated multi-domain scenarios satisfying imposed restrictions in terms of resource sharing. Algorithms run on top of an implemented simulator for federated scenarios where multiple operators are involved. Two of our proposed solutions reach O(N) running times in certain scenarios. Our results also show that we achieve acceptance ratios very similar to those obtained using a tabu meta-heuristic implementation. This work has been partially supported by the EU H2020 5G Exchange (5GEx) innovation project (grant no. 671636) and by EU H2020 5G-Transformer Project (grant no. 761536)

AMA 492 : implicit enumeration binary integer programming : balas algorithm

    Get PDF
We know that there are important economic problems which have mathematical models that are linear programs with integer variables. Among these problems are those that have variables taking only one of the values 0 or 1. Such binary integer programs, serve as mathematical models for capital budgeting, project selection, pipeline or communications network design, structural design, switching circuit design, information retrieval, fault detection, design of experiments, facility location, truck dispatching, tanker routing, crew scheduling, machine sequencing, and a host of other decision problems involving logical alternatives. Because of the importance of these decision problems the project considers a program developed in C++ that solves linear programs with variables constrained to take only one of the values 0 or 1 following the steps of the algorithm that the prestigious mathematician, Egon Balas, developed in 1965. In this document we are going to study the basic ideas and outline of the algorithm, and subsequently we will analyze the algorithm in detail, showing interesting examples like the Diet Problem with 96 variables. Finally we will show a tutorial of the application and we will draw conclusions of the operation of the algorithm.Ingeniería en Informátic

    Labour Managed Firms in Spain

    Get PDF
There are at least two types of companies: conventional capitalist companies or Profit Maximizing Firms (PMFs) and, on the other hand, companies managed by their workforce or Labour-Managed Firms (LMFs). The entrepreneurial structures in Spain which include this second type are worker cooperatives (cooperativas de trabajo asociado) and public or limited liability worker-owned companies (sociedades laborales). This paper describes how this type of company has evolved using a set of indicators and offers a closer look at some of the reasons which explain the current difficult situation which, as will be shown, can be considered as critical in the case of cooperatives.Labour-Managed Firms, worker cooperatives, worker-owned companies, employment.

Evaluation of p53 codon 72 polymorphism in adenocarcinomas of the colon and rectum in La Plata, Argentina

    Get PDF
Aim: To evaluate the potential association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma development, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Methods: One-hundred and nine controls and 53 patients with colon cancer from the city of La Plata, Argentina were analyzed. p53 codon 72 genotypes and HPV infection were identified using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction and nested polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: The differences in the distribution of p53 codon 72 polymorphism between the cases and controls were statistically significant. The arginine allele had a prevalence of 0.65 in controls and 0.77 in cases. The corresponding odds ratio for the homozygous arginine genotype was 2.08 (95% CI, 1.06-4.05; P<0.05). Lack of association was found between p53 polymorphism and HPV infection in the set of adenocarcinomas. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicate that p53 codon 72 arginine homozygous genotype may represent a genetic predisposing factor for colon cancer development. However, further studies are needed in order to elucidate the role of p53 codon 72 polymorphism in colorectal cancer.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

Novel probes for simultaneous dual-colour labelling of mitochondria and lysosomes.

Cellular activity depends on the accurately controlled and synchronised functions of the subcellular organelle ensemble. In this context, lysosomes and mitochondria are central to cellular metabolism as major contributors of chemical energy and building blocks. The coordination of lysosomal and mitochondrial metabolic roles is thus essential for cellular homeostasis, with dysfunction of these organelles associated with many human diseases. Confocal and two-photon (2P) microscopy are state-of-the-art techniques for live imaging due to their operational simplicity, excellent spatial and temporal resolution and non-invasiveness. Consequently, fluorescent dyes that specifically label subcellular structures have become vital tools for cell biology and biomedical science, and multiple dyes labelling different structures can be combined to follow complex cellular processes. However, using different labels adds cost and complexity to experiments. Thus, for biomedical research applications, a single fluorescent molecule for labelling multiple subcellular structures with organelle-specific photophysical properties has numerous advantages, including lowering cost and experimental complexity while improving the quantification of phenotypes. Based in our previously described ROS-sensor and cellular pH probe, in this communication we describe novel indolium fluorophores for labelling mitochondria and lysosomes with organelle-specific fluorescence properties, which can be readily distinguished by combining confocal and two-photon fluorescence microscopy. Our results show that this unique behaviour relies on aggregation. These probes allow for unambiguous and simultaneous visualisation of mitochondria and lysosomes in separate emission channels by using a single fluorescent marker within living cells.Universidad de Málaga.
