The nature of parent/child attachments is described and their effects on adolescent and adult intimacy and loneliness are outlined. Poor quality attachments are said to result in loneliness and deficits in intimacy, and these, in turn, make the individual vulnerable to those influences and circumstances that lead to sexual offending. These processes are one of the most important sets of factors in our more general theory of the etiology and maintenance of sexually offensive behavior. Implications for the assessment and treatment of sex offenders are derived
FARM COMPUTER ADOPTION IN THE GREAT PLAINS
Computers change rapidly, yet the last survey on computer use in agriculture was in 1991. We surveyed Great Plains producers in 1995 and used logit analysis to characterize adopters and non-adopters. About 37% of these producers use computers which is consistent with the general population. We confirmed previous surveys emphasizing the importance of education, age/experience, and other farm characteristics on adoption. However, we also found that education and experience may no longer be a significant influence. Polarization effects in millimeter wave propagation through rain: A review of present theory and a discussion of current experiments
An attempt was made to calculate the depolarization effects of rain on linearly or elliptically polarized millimeter waves. Results are given in graphs and tables

The measurement and analysis of the depolarization and attenuation that occur when millimeter wave radio signals propagate through rain are described. Progress was made in three major areas: the processing of recorded 1972 data, acquisition and processing of a large amount of 1973 data, and the development of a new theoretical model to predict rain cross polarization and attenuation. Each of these topics is described in detail along with radio frequency system design for cross polarization measurements
An HST/WFC3-UVIS View of the Starburst in the Cool Core of the Phoenix Cluster
We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 observations of the
core of the Phoenix Cluster SPT-CLJ2344-4243 in five broadband filters spanning
rest-frame 1000--5500A. These observations reveal complex, filamentary blue
emission, extending for >40kpc from the brightest cluster galaxy. We observe an
underlying, diffuse population of old stars, following an r^1/4 distribution,
confirming that this system is somewhat relaxed. The spectral energy
distribution in the inner part of the galaxy, as well as along the extended
filaments, is a smooth continuum and is consistent with that of a star-forming
galaxy, suggesting that the extended, filamentary emission is not due to the
central AGN, either from a large-scale ionized outflow or scattered polarized
UV emission, but rather a massive population of young stars. We estimate an
extinction-corrected star formation rate of 798 +/- 42 Msun/yr, consistent with
our earlier work based on low spatial resolution ultraviolet, optical, and
infrared imaging. The lack of tidal features and multiple bulges, combine with
the need for an exceptionally massive (>10^11 Msun) cold gas reservoir, suggest
that this star formation is not the result of a merger of gas-rich galaxies.
Instead, we propose that the high X-ray cooling rate of ~2700 Msun/yr is the
origin of the cold gas reservoir. The combination of such a high cooling rate
and the relatively weak radio source in the cluster core suggests that feedback
has been unable to halt cooling in this system, leading to this tremendous

In Search of Professional Dispositions that Yield Cultural Relevance in Primary Grade Pedagogy: A Cautionary Tale of One Kindergarten Teacher
Primary grade teachers are challenged to establish firm learning foundations for all children, yet for many teachers cultural diversity makes this a complex pedagogical challenge. It is widely assumed that the success with which teachers meet this challenge is reflected in their dispositions toward diversity, and ultimately toward culturally relevant pedagogy as a professional orientation. This article describes a multi-year study of cultural relevance in early mathematics teaching. Using the case of one kindergarten teacher who exhibited positive dispositions toward cultural relevance, the authors examine factors that seemed to work against its adoption in her pedagogy

Patients as researchers - innovative experiences in UK National Health Service research
Consumer involvement is an established priority in UK health and social care service development and research. To date, little has been published describing the process of consumer involvement and assessing âconsumersâ contributions to research. This paper provides a practical account of the effective incorporation of consumers into a research team, and outlines the extent to which they can enhance the research cycle; from project development and conduct, through data analysis and interpretation, to dissemination. Salient points are illustrated using the example of their collaboration in a research project. Of particular note were consumersâ contributions to the development of an ethically enhanced, more robust project design, and enriched data interpretation, which may not have resulted had consumers not been an integral part of the research team
RETROCAM: A Versatile Optical Imager for Synoptic Studies
We present RETROCAM, an auxiliary CCD camera that can be rapidly inserted
into the optical beam of the MDM 2.4m telescope. The speed and ease of
reconfiguring the telescope to use the imager and a straightforward user
interface permit the camera to be used during the course of other observing
programs. This in turn encourages RETROCAM's use for a variety of monitoring
