Three stage rocket vehicle with parallel staging

    Get PDF
A three stage rocket vehicle has a large forward propellant tank and a small aft propellant tank axially aligned. Secured to the rear end of the aft propellant tank is an engine mount structure carrying rocket engines. Offset and secured to the propellant tanks is a payload structure. The propellants from the large forward tank are fed into the aft propellant tank. This arrangement enables the vehicle to parallel stage its use of engines and components and results in significant payload capability. The design and components fully utilize existing space shuttle elements and tooling

Role of Space Station: The how of space industrialization

    Get PDF
The roles of the Space Station, as an R&D facility, as part of an industrial system which support space industralization, and as a transportation node for space operations are considered. Industrial opportunities relative to these roles are identified and space station concepts responsive to these roles are discussed

Evaluation of a spacecraft nitrogen generator

    Get PDF
An experiment was completed to demonstrate that low ammonia concentrations in the product nitrogen stream are possible using the staging concept. Mixtures of nitrogen, hydrogen and ammonia were fed into a temperature controlled packed bed ammonia dissociator. An ammonia concentration of 1.03% in the feed stream was reduced to less than 50 ppm at temperatures greater than or equal to 777K. The actual inlet ammonia concentration to the final nitrogen generation module ammonia dissociation stage was only 0.09%

A simple method for designing or analyzing an optical communication link

    Get PDF
A simple method is described for determining the performance of a free space optical communication link. The method can be used either in the system design (synthesis) mode or in the performance evaluation (analysis) mode. Although restricted to photo counting based detection of pulse position modulated signals, the method is still sufficiently general to accommodate space-based, as well as ground-based, reception

Cautionary tales for reduced-gravity particle research

    Get PDF
Failure of experiments conducted on the KC-135 aircraft in zero gravity are discussed. Tests that were a total failure are reported. Why the failure occurred and the sort of questions that potential researchers should ask in order to avoid the appearance of abstracts such as this are discussed. Many types of aggregation studies were proposed for the Space Station, and it is hoped that the following synopsis of events will add a touch of reality to experimentation proposed for this zero-gravity environment

Polarization effects in millimeter wave propagation through rain: A review of present theory and a discussion of current experiments

    Get PDF
An attempt was made to calculate the depolarization effects of rain on linearly or elliptically polarized millimeter waves. Results are given in graphs and tables

Conditions for entanglement transformation between a class of multipartite pure states with generalized Schmidt decompositions

In this note we generalize Nielsen's marjoization criterion for the convertibility of bipartite pure states [Phys. Rev. Lett \textbf{83}, 436(1999)] to a special class of multipartite pure states which have generalized Schmidt decompositions.Comment: 3 pages (Revetex 4), no figures. A brief note on entanglement transformation. Comments are welcom

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

    Get PDF
The measurement and analysis of the depolarization and attenuation that occur when millimeter wave radio signals propagate through rain are described. Progress was made in three major areas: the processing of recorded 1972 data, acquisition and processing of a large amount of 1973 data, and the development of a new theoretical model to predict rain cross polarization and attenuation. Each of these topics is described in detail along with radio frequency system design for cross polarization measurements
