    Maternal performance for first calf production was evaluated in retrospect for daughters whose sires had expected progeny differences (EPDs) available from 1988 beef breed association national genetic evaluation summaries. When grouped into high EPD and low EPD groups, sire EPD group averages for actual daughter milk production and weaning weights of daughters\u27 off spring consistently ranked the same as sire group average EPDs for milk and maternal weaning weight, although differences between groups were not statistically significant

    Interrelationships of Heifer Milk Production and Other Biological Traits with Production Efficiency to Weaning

    Interrelationships among milk production, cow-calf feed efficiency and other biological traits were evaluated on first-calf females and their calves. Production efficiency was defined as cumulative feed metabolizable energy consumed by the dam-calf pair during the year divided by calf weaning weight. Results indicated that increased levels of milk production were associated with improved production efficiency to weaning as long as calves have the genetic potential to convert the extra milk into body weight gains. However, the incremental improvement in efficiency per unit of increased milk was less for each additional unit of milk

    Comparison of Sire Expected Progeny Differences to Actual Performance of Crossbred Offspring

    Actual performance of crossbred calves produced at the Antelope Range Livestock Station was evaluated and compared to the sire\u27s expected progeny differences (EPDs) as reported in 1988 beef breed association sire summaries. Comparisons were made between high EPD and low EPD sire groups in retrospect for actual birth weight and weaning weight performance of crossbred progeny. Separate analyses were completed for Polled Hereford, Simmental, Tarentaise and Angus sires. Progeny of high EPD sires ranked higher for average birth weight than progeny of low EPD sires for all sire breeds. Rankings for calf weaning weight were less consistent than for birth weight in reflecting rankings of sire EPDs

    Comparison of CT ventilation imaging and hyperpolarised gas MRI: effects of breathing manoeuvre.

    Image registration of lung CT images acquired at different inflation levels has been proposed as a surrogate method to map lung 'ventilation'. Prior to clinical use, it is important to understand how this technique compares with direct ventilation imaging modalities such as hyperpolarised gas MRI. However, variations in lung inflation level have been shown to affect regional ventilation distributions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of lung inflation levels when comparing CT ventilation imaging to ventilation from 3He-MRI.
 
 7 asthma patients underwent breath-hold CT at total lung capacity (TLC) and functional residual capacity (FRC). 3He-MRI and a same-breath 1H-MRI were acquired at FRC+1L and TLC. Percentage ventilated volumes (%VVs) were calculated for FRC+1L and TLC 3He-MRI. TLC-CT and registered FRC-CT were used to compute a surrogate ventilation map from voxel-wise intensity differences in Hounsfield unit values, which was thresholded at the 10th and 20th percentiles. For direct comparison of CT and 3He-MRI ventilation, FRC+1L and TLC 3He-MRI were registered to TLC-CT indirectly via the corresponding same-breath 1H-MRI data. For 3He-MRI and CT ventilation comparison, Dice similarity coefficients (DSCs) between the binary segmentations were computed.
 
 The median (range) of %VVs for FRC+1L and TLC 3He-MRI were 90.5 (54.9-93.6) and 91.8 (67.8-96.2), respectively (p=0.018). For MRI versus CT ventilation comparison, statistically significant improvements in DSCs were observed for TLC 3He MRI when compared with FRC+1L, with median (range) values of 0.93 (0.86-0.93) and 0.86 (0.68-0.92), respectively (p=0.017), for the 10-100th percentile and 0.87 (0.83-0.88) and 0.81 (0.66-0.87), respectively (p=0.027), for the 20-100th percentile.
 
 Correlation of CT ventilation imaging and hyperpolarised gas MRI is sensitive to lung inflation level. For ventilation maps derived from CT acquired at FRC and TLC, a higher correlation with gas ventilation MRI can be achieved if the MRI is acquired at TLC. &#13

    A method for quantitative analysis of regional lung ventilation using deformable image registration of CT and hybrid hyperpolarized gas/H-1 MRI

    Hyperpolarized gas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) generates highly detailed maps of lung ventilation and physiological function while CT provides corresponding anatomical and structural information. Fusion of such complementary images enables quantitative analysis of pulmonary structure-function. However, direct image registration of hyperpolarized gas MRI to CT is problematic, particularly in lungs whose boundaries are difficult to delineate due to ventilation heterogeneity. This study presents a novel indirect method of registering hyperpolarized gas MRI to CT utilizing 1H-structural MR images that are acquired in the same breath-hold as the gas MRI. The feasibility of using this technique for regional quantification of ventilation of specific pulmonary structures is demonstrated for the lobes. The direct and indirect methods of hyperpolarized gas MRI to CT image registration were compared using lung images from 15 asthma patients. Both affine and diffeomorphic image transformations were implemented. Registration accuracy was evaluated using the target registration error (TRE) of anatomical landmarks identified on 1H MRI and CT. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to test statistical significance. For the affine transformation, the indirect method of image registration was significantly more accurate than the direct method (TRE = 14.7  ±  3.2 versus 19.6  ±  12.7 mm, p = 0.036). Using a deformable transformation, the indirect method was also more accurate than the direct method (TRE = 13.5  ±  3.3 versus 20.4  ±  12.8 mm, p = 0.006). Accurate image registration is critical for quantification of regional lung ventilation with hyperpolarized gas MRI within the anatomy delineated by CT. Automatic deformable image registration of hyperpolarized gas MRI to CT via same breath-hold 1H MRI is more accurate than direct registration. Potential applications include improved multi-modality image fusion, functionally weighted radiotherapy planning, and quantification of lobar ventilation in obstructive airways disease

    Generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov Reductions and KdV Type Hierarchies

    Generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov (DS) hierarchies are constructed through local reductions of Hamiltonian flows generated by monodromy invariants on the dual of a loop algebra. Following earlier work of De Groot et al, reductions based upon graded regular elements of arbitrary Heisenberg subalgebras are considered. We show that, in the case of the nontwisted loop algebra (gln)\ell(gl_n), graded regular elements exist only in those Heisenberg subalgebras which correspond either to the partitions of nn into the sum of equal numbers n=prn=pr or to equal numbers plus one n=pr+1n=pr+1. We prove that the reduction belonging to the grade 11 regular elements in the case n=prn=pr yields the p×pp\times p matrix version of the Gelfand-Dickey rr-KdV hierarchy, generalizing the scalar case p=1p=1 considered by DS. The methods of DS are utilized throughout the analysis, but formulating the reduction entirely within the Hamiltonian framework provided by the classical r-matrix approach leads to some simplifications even for p=1p=1.Comment: 43 page

    Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and European Cystic Fibrosis Society Survey of cystic fibrosis mental health care delivery

    Background: Psychological morbidity in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their caregivers is common. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) and European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) Guidelines Committee on Mental Health sought the views of CF health care professionals concerning mental health care delivery. Methods: An online survey which focused on the current provision and barriers to mental health care was distributed to CF health care professionals. Results: Of the 1454 respondents, many did not have a colleague trained in mental health issues and 20% had no one on their team whose primary role was focused on assessing or treating these issues. Insufficient resources and a lack of competency were reported in relation to mental health referrals. Seventy-three percent of respondents had no experience with mental health screening. Of those who did, they utilized 48 different, validated scales. Conclusions: These data have informed the decision-making, dissemination and implementation strategies of the Mental Health Guidelines Committee sponsored by the CFF and ECFS

    Potato cultivar response to seasonal drought patterns

    The ability to minimize potato yield and quality losses due to drought can be greatly improved by understanding the relative responses of different cultivars to seasonal variations in water supply. To address this need, we initiated a two year field experiment to determine the responses of the six potato cultivars to different seasonal drought patterns, including 1) full season irrigation at 100% ET, 2) irrigation at 100% ET terminated during late bulking , 3) full season irrigation at 70% ET , 4) irrigation at 70% ET terminated during late bulking , and 5) a gradual reduction in irrigation from 100% ET during tuber initiation through early bulking, to 70% ET during mid-bulking, and 50% ET through late bulking. GemStar Russet and Ranger Russet, two medium-late maturing cultivars, generally produced the highest yields across the range of drought treatments, but both were fairly sensitive to changes in drought severity. Alturas, a late maturing cultivar, produced relatively high yields with full irrigation, but exhibited the greatest sensitivity to increasing drought severity, particularly when severe late-season water deficits were imposed. Yields for the early maturing cultivar Russet Norkotah were relatively low overall, but it was the least sensitive to changes in drought severity, particularly when late season drought was imposed. Russet Burbank produced comparatively high total yields across the range of drought treatments, but U.S. No. 1 yields were substantially reduced by each seasonal drought pattern. However, it was less sensitive to changes in drought severity than GemStar Russet, Ranger Russet and Alturas. Total and U.S. No. 1 yields for Summit Russet were low for each drought treatment and it exhibited intermediate sensitivity to changes in drought severity. GemStar Russet had the highest water use efficiency based on U.S. No. 1 yield

    Comparison of 3He and129Xe MRI for evaluation of lung microstructure and ventilation at 1.5T

    BACKGROUND: To support translational lung MRI research with hyperpolarized129Xe gas, comprehensive evaluation of derived quantitative lung function measures against established measures from3He MRI is required. Few comparative studies have been performed to date, only at 3T, and multisession repeatability of129Xe functional metrics have not been reported. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To compare hyperpolarized129Xe and3He MRI-derived quantitative metrics of lung ventilation and microstructure, and their repeatability, at 1.5T. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Fourteen healthy nonsmokers (HN), five exsmokers (ES), five patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and 16 patients with nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5T. NSCLC, COPD patients and selected HN subjects underwent 3D balanced steady-state free-precession lung ventilation MRI using both3He and129Xe. Selected HN, all ES, and COPD patients underwent 2D multislice spoiled gradient-echo diffusion-weighted lung MRI using both hyperpolarized gas nuclei. ASSESSMENT: Ventilated volume percentages (VV%) and mean apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) were derived from imaging. COPD patients performed the whole MR protocol in four separate scan sessions to assess repeatability. Same-day pulmonary function tests were performed. STATISTICAL TESTS: Intermetric correlations: Spearman's coefficient. Intergroup/internuclei differences: analysis of variance / Wilcoxon's signed rank. Repeatability: coefficient of variation (CV), intraclass correlation (ICC) coefficient. RESULTS: A significant positive correlation between3He and129Xe VV% was observed (r = 0.860, P < 0.001). VV% was larger for3He than129Xe (P = 0.001); average bias, 8.79%. A strong correlation between mean3He and129Xe ADC was obtained (r = 0.922, P < 0.001). MR parameters exhibited good correlations with pulmonary function tests. In COPD patients, mean CV of3He and129Xe VV% was 4.08% and 13.01%, respectively, with ICC coefficients of 0.541 (P = 0.061) and 0.458 (P = 0.095). Mean3He and129Xe ADC values were highly repeatable (mean CV: 2.98%, 2.77%, respectively; ICC: 0.995, P < 0.001; 0.936, P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION:129Xe lung MRI provides near-equivalent information to3He for quantitative lung ventilation and microstructural MRI at 1.5T. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3 Technical Efficacy Stage

    Narrow genetic base in forest restoration with holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) in Sicily

    In order to empirically assess the effect of actual seed sampling strategy on genetic diversity of holm oak (Quercus ilex) forestations in Sicily, we have analysed the genetic composition of two seedling lots (nursery stock and plantation) and their known natural seed origin stand by means of six nuclear microsatellite loci. Significant reduction in genetic diversity and significant difference in genetic composition of the seedling lots compared to the seed origin stand were detected. The female and the total effective number of parents were quantified by means of maternity assignment of seedlings and temporal changes in allele frequencies. Extremely low effective maternity numbers were estimated (Nfe \approx 2-4) and estimates accounting for both seed and pollen donors gave also low values (Ne \approx 35-50). These values can be explained by an inappropriate forestry seed harvest strategy limited to a small number of spatially close trees
