A Search for Exozodiacal Clouds with Kepler
Planets embedded within dust disks may drive the formation of large scale
clumpy dust structures by trapping dust into resonant orbits. Detection and
subsequent modeling of the dust structures would help constrain the mass and
orbit of the planet and the disk architecture, give clues to the history of the
planetary system, and provide a statistical estimate of disk asymmetry for
future exoEarth-imaging missions. Here we present the first search for these
resonant structures in the inner regions of planetary systems by analyzing the
light curves of hot Jupiter planetary candidates identified by the Kepler
mission. We detect only one candidate disk structure associated with KOI 838.01
at the 3-sigma confidence level, but subsequent radial velocity measurements
reveal that KOI 838.01 is a grazing eclipsing binary and the candidate disk
structure is a false positive. Using our null result, we place an upper limit
on the frequency of dense exozodi structures created by hot Jupiters. We find
that at the 90% confidence level, less than 21% of Kepler hot Jupiters create
resonant dust clumps that lead and trail the planet by ~90 degrees with optical
depths >~5*10^-6, which corresponds to the resonant structure expected for a
lone hot Jupiter perturbing a dynamically cold dust disk 50 times as dense as

IL-1 receptor signaling in the basolateral amygdala modulates binge-like ethanol consumption in male C57BL/6J mice
Proinflammatory cytokines have been implicated in alcohol-induced neurodegeneration, but the role of the neuroimmune system in alcohol related behaviors has only recently come to the forefront. Herein, the effects of binge-like drinking on IL-1β mRNA and immunoreactivity within the amygdala were measured following the “drinking in the dark” (DID) paradigm, a model of binge-like ethanol drinking in C57BL/6J mice. Moreover, the role of IL-1 receptor signaling in the amygdala on ethanol consumption was assessed. Results indicated that a history of binge-like ethanol drinking promoted a significant increase of IL-1β mRNA expression within the amygdala, and immunohistochemistry analyses revealed that the basolateral amygdala (BLA), but not central amygdala (CeA), exhibited significantly increased IL-1β immunoreactivity. Fluoro-Jade® C labeling indicated that multiple cycles of the DID paradigm were not sufficient to elicit neuronal death. Bilateral infusions of IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) reduced ethanol consumption when infused into the BLA but not the CeA. These observations were specific to ethanol drinking as the IL-1Ra did not alter either sucrose drinking or open-field locomotor activity. The current findings highlight a specific role for IL-1 receptor signaling in modulating binge-like ethanol consumption and indicate that proinflammatory cytokines can be induced prior to dependence or any evidence of neuronal cell death. These findings provide a framework in which to understand how neuroimmune adaptations may alter ethanol consumption and therein contributing to alcohol abuse
Intrinsic Absorption in the Spectrum of NGC 7469: Simultaneous Chandra, FUSE, and STIS Observations
We present simultaneous X-ray, far-ultraviolet, and near-ultraviolet spectra
of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 obtained with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory,
the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, and the Space Telescope Imaging
Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Previous non-simultaneous
observations of this galaxy found two distinct UV absorption components, at
-560 and -1900 km/s, with the former as the likely counterpart of the X-ray
absorber. We confirm these two absorption components in our new UV
observations, in which we detect prominent O VI, Ly alpha, N V, and C IV
absorption. In our Chandra spectrum we detect O VIII emission, but no
significant O VIII or O VII absorption. We also detect a prominent Fe K alpha
emission line in the Chandra spectrum, as well as absorption due to
hydrogen-like and helium-like neon, magnesium, and silicon at velocities
consistent with the -560 km/s UV absorber. The FUSE and STIS data reveal that
the H I and C IV column densities in this UV- and X-ray- absorbing component
have increased over time, as the UV continuum flux decreased. We use measured H
I, N V, C IV, and O VI column densities to model the photoionization state of
both absorbers self-consistently. We confirm the general physical picture of
the outflow in which the low velocity component is a highly ionized, high
density absorber with a total column density of 10^20 cm^-2, located near the
broad emission line region, although due to measurable columns of N V and C IV,
we assign it a somewhat smaller ionization parameter than found previously,
U~1. The high velocity UV component is of lower density, log N=18.6, and likely
resides farther from the central engine as we find its ionization parameter to

In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation of Infestation Deterrents Against Lice
The human head louse is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite and frequently infests many people, particularly school-age children. Due to widespread pyrethroid resistance and the lack of efficient resistance management, there has been a considerable interest in the protection of uninfested people and prevention of reinfestation by disrupting lice transfer. In this study, two nonclinical model systems (in vitro and in vivo) were used to determine the efficacy of the infestation deterrents, Elimax lotion and Elimax shampoo, against human head lice or poultry chewing lice, respectively. With in vitro assessments, female head lice exhibited significantly higher avoidance responses to hair tufts treated with either of the test formulations, which led to significantly higher ovipositional avoidance when compared with female lice on control hair tufts. Additionally, both formulations were determined to be competent infestation deterrents in a competitive avoidance test in the presence of a known attractant (head louse feces extract). In in vivo assessments using a previously validated poultry model, Elimax shampoo was determined to be an efficacious deterrent against poultry chewing lice within Menopon spp. and Menacanthus spp
A double pedigree reveals genetic but not cultural inheritance of cooperative personalities in wild banded mongooses
Personality traits, such as the propensity to cooperate, are often inherited from parents to offspring, but the pathway of inheritance is unclear. Traits could be inherited via genetic or parental effects, or culturally via social learning from role models. However, these pathways are difficult to disentangle in natural systems as parents are usually the source of all of these effects. Here, we exploit natural 'cross fostering' in wild banded mongooses to investigate the inheritance of cooperative behaviour. Our analysis of 800 adult helpers over 21 years showed low but significant genetic heritability of cooperative personalities in males but not females. Cross fostering revealed little evidence of cultural heritability: offspring reared by particularly cooperative helpers did not become more cooperative themselves. Our results demonstrate that cooperative personalities are not always highly heritable in wild, and that the basis of behavioural traits can vary within a species (here, by sex).Peer reviewe
Twelve years of SAMtools and BCFtools.
BACKGROUND: SAMtools and BCFtools are widely used programs for processing and analysing high-throughput sequencing data. They include tools for file format conversion and manipulation, sorting, querying, statistics, variant calling, and effect analysis amongst other methods. FINDINGS: The first version appeared online 12 years ago and has been maintained and further developed ever since, with many new features and improvements added over the years. The SAMtools and BCFtools packages represent a unique collection of tools that have been used in numerous other software projects and countless genomic pipelines. CONCLUSION: Both SAMtools and BCFtools are freely available on GitHub under the permissive MIT licence, free for both non-commercial and commercial use. Both packages have been installed >1 million times via Bioconda. The source code and documentation are available from https://www.htslib.org
KELT-1b: A Strongly Irradiated, Highly Inflated, Short Period, 27 Jupiter-mass Companion Transiting a mid-F Star
We present the discovery of KELT-1b, the first transiting low-mass companion
from the wide-field Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope-North (KELT-North)
survey. The V=10.7 primary is a mildly evolved, solar-metallicity, mid-F star.
The companion is a low-mass brown dwarf or super-massive planet with mass of
27.23+/-0.50 MJ and radius of 1.110+0.037-0.024 RJ, on a very short period
(P=1.21750007) circular orbit. KELT-1b receives a large amount of stellar
insolation, with an equilibrium temperature assuming zero albedo and perfect
redistribution of 2422 K. Upper limits on the secondary eclipse depth indicate
that either the companion must have a non-zero albedo, or it must experience
some energy redistribution. Comparison with standard evolutionary models for
brown dwarfs suggests that the radius of KELT-1b is significantly inflated.
Adaptive optics imaging reveals a candidate stellar companion to KELT-1, which
is consistent with an M dwarf if bound. The projected spin-orbit alignment
angle is consistent with zero stellar obliquity, and the vsini of the primary
is consistent with tidal synchronization. Given the extreme parameters of the
KELT-1 system, we expect it to provide an important testbed for theories of the
emplacement and evolution of short-period companions, and theories of tidal

Gemini Planet Imager Observational Calibrations VI: Photometric and Spectroscopic Calibration for the Integral Field Spectrograph
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a new facility instrument for the Gemini
Observatory designed to provide direct detection and characterization of
planets and debris disks around stars in the solar neighborhood. In addition to
its extreme adaptive optics and corona graphic systems which give access to
high angular resolution and high-contrast imaging capabilities, GPI contains an
integral field spectrograph providing low resolution spectroscopy across five
bands between 0.95 and 2.5 m. This paper describes the sequence of
processing steps required for the spectro-photometric calibration of GPI
science data, and the necessary calibration files. Based on calibration
observations of the white dwarf HD 8049B we estimate that the systematic error
in spectra extracted from GPI observations is less than 5%. The flux ratio of
the occulted star and fiducial satellite spots within coronagraphic GPI
observations, required to estimate the magnitude difference between a target
and any resolved companions, was measured in the -band to be in laboratory measurements and using
on-sky observations. Laboratory measurements for the , , and
filters are also presented. The total throughput of GPI, Gemini South and the
atmosphere of the Earth was also measured in each photometric passband, with a
typical throughput in -band of 18% in the non-coronagraphic mode, with some
variation observed over the six-month period for which observations were
available. We also report ongoing development and improvement of the data cube
