    Natural Boundaries for Solutions to a Certain Class of Functional Differential Equations

    AbstractThis paper is concerned with a generalization of a functional differential equation known as the pantograph equation. The pantograph equation contains a linear functional argument. In this paper we generalize this functional argument to include nonlinear polynomials. In contrast to the entire solutions generated by the pantograph equation for the retarded case, we show that in the nonlinear case natural boundaries occur. These boundaries are linked to the Julia set of the polynomial functional argument

    Surface Morphology and Microstructure of Al-O Alloys Grown by ECR Plasma Deposition

    The growth of polycrystalline and amorphous aluminum-oxygen alloy films using electron-beam evaporation of Al in the presence of an O{sub 2} electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECR) plasma was investigated for film compositions varying from 40% Al (Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}) to near 100% Al (AlO{sub x}). Processing parameters such as deposition temperature and ion energy were varied to study their effects on surface texture and film microstructure. The Al-rich films (AlO{sub x}) contain polycrystalline fcc Al grains with finely dispersed second-phase particles of {gamma}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} (1-2 nm in size). The surface roughness of these films was measured by atomic force microscopy and found to increase with sample bias and deposition temperature. Stoichiometric Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} films grown at 100{degrees}C and 400{degrees}C without an applied bias were amorphous, while an applied bias of -140 V formed a nanocrystalline {gamma}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} film at 400{degrees}C.     X-Ray Scattering Measurements of the Transient Structure of a Driven Charge-Density-Wave

    We report time-resolved x-ray scattering measurements of the transient structural response of the sliding {\bf Q}1_{1} charge-density-wave (CDW) in NbSe3_{3} to a reversal of the driving electric field. The observed time scale characterizing this response at 70K varies from ∌\sim 15 msec for driving fields near threshold to ∌\sim 2 msec for fields well above threshold. The position and time-dependent strain of the CDW is analyzed in terms of a phenomenological equation of motion for the phase of the CDW order parameter. The value of the damping constant, Îł=(3.2±0.7)×10−19\gamma = (3.2 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-19} eV ⋅\cdot seconds ⋅\cdot \AA−3^{-3}, is in excellent agreement with the value determined from transport measurements. As the driving field approaches threshold from above, the line shape becomes bimodal, suggesting that the CDW does not depin throughout the entire sample at one well-defined voltage.Comment: revtex 3.0, 7 figure

This paper addresses this gap with a log analysis study of eBook access at the library of the University of Waikato. This in-depth analysis covers a period spanning 10 years of eBook use at this university. We draw conclusions about the use of eBooks at this institution and compare the results with other published studies of eBook usage at tertiary institutes

    Evolution of the pairing pseudogap in the spectral function with interplane anisotropy

    We study the pairing pseudogap in the spectral function as a function of interplane coupling. The analytical expressions for the self-energy in the critical regime are obtained for any degree of anisotropy. The frequency dependence of the self-energy is found to be qualitatively different in two and three dimensions, and the crossover from two to three dimensional behavior is discussed. In particular, by considering the anisotropy of the Fermi velocity and gap along the Fermi surface, we can qualitatively explain recent photoemission experiments on high temperature superconductors concerning the temperature dependent Fermi arcs seen in the pseudogap phase.Comment: 20 pages, revtex, 5 encapsulated postscript figures include

    In this paper we discuss and compare a node-only LAGEOS-LAGEOS II combination and a node-only LAGEOS-LAGEOS II-Ajisai-Jason1 combination for the determination of the Lense-Thirring effect. The new combined EIGEN-CG01C Earth gravity model has been adopted. The second combination cancels the first three even zonal harmonics along with their secular variations but introduces the non-gravitational perturbations of Jason1. The first combination is less sensitive to the non-conservative forces but is sensitive to the secular variations of the uncancelled even zonal harmonics of low degree J4 and J6 whose impact grows linearly in time.Comment: Latex2e, 22 pag. 1 table, 2 figures, 45 references.     A within farm clinical trial to compare two treatments (parenteral antibacterials and hoof trimming) for sheep lame with footrot

    From observational studies, farmers who use parenteral antibacterials to promptly treat all sheep with footrot (FR) or interdigital dermatitis (ID) have a prevalence of lameness of <2% compared with a prevalence of 9% lameness reported by farmers who treat lame sheep by trimming affected feet. We tested the hypothesis that prompt treatment of sheep lame with naturally developing FR or ID with parenteral and topical antibacterials reduces the prevalence and incidence of lameness with these conditions compared with less frequent treatment with trimming of hoof horn and applying topical antibacterials. A further hypothesis was that reduction of ID and FR would improve productivity. A lowland sheep flock with 700 ewes was used to test these hypotheses in an 18-month within farm clinical trial with four groups of ewes: two intervention and two control. The duration and severity of lameness was used to categorise sheep into three weighted scores of lameness (WLS): never lame (WLS0), mildly lame/lame for <6 days (WLS1) and severely or chronically lame (WLS2). The intervention reduced the prevalence of lameness due to FR and ID in ewes and lambs and the incidence of lameness in ewes. The WLS was also significantly lower in sheep in the intervention groups. Ewes with a higher WLS were subsequently significantly more likely to have a body condition score <2.5 and to have lame lambs. Significantly more ewes lambed and successfully reared more lambs that were ready for slaughter at a younger age in the intervention versus control groups. There was an increase in the gross margin of ÂŁ630/100 ewes mated in the intervention group, including the cost of treatment of ÂŁ150/100 ewes mated. We conclude that prompt parenteral and topical antibacterial treatment of sheep lame with ID and FR reduced the prevalence and incidence of these infectious conditions and led to improved health, welfare and productivity

    Playing safe: Assessing the risk of sexual abuse to elite child athletes

    Young athletes frequently suffer from being seen as athletes first and children second. This has consequences for their legal, civil and human rights as children (Kelly et al., 1995) and for the way in which sport organisations choose to intervene on their behalf to protect them from physical, psychological and sexual abuses (Brackenridge, 1994). Sport careers peak at different ages depending on the sport: in some, children as young as 12 or 13 may reach the highest levels of competitive performance; in others, full maturity as an athlete may come late into adulthood or even middle age. Recognition of this variation has given rise to the concept of ‘sport age’ (Kirby, 1986) referring to sport-specific athlete development. This concept is of significance in helping to identify the developmental process in terms of athletic, rather than chronological, maturity. The risk of sexual abuse in sport, formerly ignored or denied, has now been documented in a number of studies, using both quantitative and qualitative methods (Kirby & Greaves, 1996; Brackenridge, 1997; Volkwein, 1996). Drawing on data from these studies and from the previous work on sport age and athletic maturation, this paper proposes a possible means of identifying and assessing relative risk of sexual abuse to elite young athletes in selected sports.
