Observation of Instabilities of Coherent Transverse Ocillations in the Fermilab Booster
The Fermilab Booster - built more than 40 years ago - operates well above the
design proton beam intensity of 4x10**12 ppp. Still, the Fermilab neutrino
experiments call for even higher intensity of 5.5x10**12 ppp. A multitude of
intensity related effects must be overcome in order to meet this goal including
suppression of coherent dipole instabilities of transverse oscillations which
manifest themselves as a sudden drop in the beam current. In this report we
present the results of observation of these instabilities at different tune,

A Mid-Infrared Imaging Survey of Embedded Young Stellar Objects in the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Core
Results of a comprehensive, new, ground-based mid-infrared imaging survey of
the young stellar population of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud are presented. Data were
acquired at the Palomar 5-m and at the Keck 10-m telescopes with the MIRLIN and
LWS instruments, at 0.25 arcsec and 0.25 arcsec resolutions, respectively. Of
172 survey objects, 85 were detected. Among the 22 multiple systems observed,
15 were resolved and their individual component fluxes determined. A plot of
the frequency distribution of the detected objects with SED spectral slope
shows that YSOs spend ~400,000 yr in the Flat Spectrum phase, clearing out
their remnant infall envelopes. Mid-infrared variability is found among a
significant fraction of the surveyed objects, and is found to occur for all SED
classes with optically thick disks. Large-amplitude near-infrared variability,
also found for all SED classes with optically thick disks, seems to occur with
somewhat higher frequency at the earlier evolutionary stages. Although a
general trend of mid-infrared excess and NIR veiling exists proceeding through
SED classes, with Class I objects generally exhibiting K-veilings > 1, Flat
Spectrum objects with K-veilings > 0.58, and Class III objects with K-veilings
=0, Class II objects exhibit the widest range of K-band veiling values, 0-4.5.
However, the highly variable value of veiling that a single source can exhibit
in any of the SED classes in which active disk accretion can take place is
striking, and is direct observational evidence for highly time-variable
accretion activity in disks. Finally, by comparing mid-infrared vs.
near-infrared excesses in a subsample with well-determined effective
temperatures and extinction values, disk clearing mechanisms are explored. The
results are consistent with disk clearing proceeding from the inside-out.Comment: 18 pages + 5 tables + 7 figure
Galactic Binary Gravitational Wave Noise within LISA Frequency Band
Gravitational wave noise associated with unresolved binary stars in the
Galaxy is studied with the special aim of determining the upper frequency at
which it stops to contribute at the rms noise level of the proposed space-born
interferometer (LISA). The upper limit to this background is derived from the
statistics of SN Ia explosions, part of which can be triggered by binary white
dwarf coalescences. The upper limiting frequency at which binary stochastic
noise crosses LISA rms sensitivity is found to lie within the range 0.03-0.07
Hz, depending on the galactic binary white dwarf coalescence rate. To be
reliably detectable by LISA, the energy density of relic cosmological
background per logarithmic frequency interval should be

Measurement of an AGN Central Mass on Centiparsec Scales: Results of Long-Term Optical Monitoring of Arp 102B
The optical spectrum of the broad-line radio galaxy Arp 102B has been
monitored for more than thirteen years to investigate the nature of the source
of its broad, double-peaked hydrogen Balmer emission lines. The shape of the
lines varied subtly; there was an interval during which the variation in the
ratio of the fluxes of the two peaks appeared to be sinusoidal, with a period
of 2.16 years and an amplitude of about 16% of the average value. The variable
part of the broad H-alpha line is well fit by a model in which a region of
excess emission (a quiescent ``hot spot'') within an accretion disk (fitted to
the non-varying portion of the double-peaked line) completes at least two
circular orbits and eventually fades. Fits to spectra from epochs when the hot
spot is not present allow determination of the disk inclination, while fits for
epochs when it is present provide a measurement of the radius of the hot spot's
orbit. From these data and the period of variation, we find that the mass
within the hot spot's orbit is 2.2 +0.2/-0.7 times 10^8 solar masses, within
the range of previous estimates of masses of active galactic nuclei. Because
this mass is determined at a relatively small distance (~1000 AU) from the
central body, it is extremely difficult to explain without assuming that a
supermassive black hole lies within Arp 102B. The lack of any systematic change
in the velocity of the blue peak over time yields a lower limit on the combined
mass of the two bodies in a binary black hole model like that of Gaskell (1983)

Applications of BGP-reflection functors: isomorphisms of cluster algebras
Given a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix , for any index , one
can define an automorphism associated with of the field of rational functions of independent indeterminates It is an isomorphism between two cluster algebras associated to the
matrix (see section 4 for precise meaning). When is of finite type,
these isomorphisms behave nicely, they are compatible with the BGP-reflection
functors of cluster categories defined in [Z1, Z2] if we identify the
indecomposable objects in the categories with cluster variables of the
corresponding cluster algebras, and they are also compatible with the
"truncated simple reflections" defined in [FZ2, FZ3]. Using the construction of
preprojective or preinjective modules of hereditary algebras by Dlab-Ringel
[DR] and the Coxeter automorphisms (i.e., a product of these isomorphisms), we
construct infinitely many cluster variables for cluster algebras of infinite
type and all cluster variables for finite types.Comment: revised versio

A new compound, dipotassium holmium(III) phosphate(V) tungstate(VI), K2Ho(PO4)(WO4), has been obtained during investigation of the K2O–P2O5–WO3–HoF3 phase system using the flux technique. The compound is isotypic with K2Bi(PO4)(WO4). Its framework structure consists of flat ∞
2[HoPO4] layers parallel to (100) that are made up of ∞
1[HoO8] zigzag chains interlinked via slightly distorted PO4 tetrahedra. WO4 tetrahedra are attached above and below these layers, leaving space for the K+ counter-cations. The HoO8, PO4 and WO4 units exhibit 2 symmetry
Low-energy Coulomb excitation of Fe and Mn following in-beam decay of Mn
Sub-barrier Coulomb-excitation was performed on a mixed beam of Mn and
Fe, following in-trap decay of Mn at REX-ISOLDE,
CERN. The trapping and charge breeding times were varied in order to alter the
composition of the beam, which was measured by means of an ionisation chamber
at the zero-angle position of the Miniball array. A new transition was observed
at 418~keV, which has been tentatively associated to a
transition. This fixes the relative
positions of the -decaying and states in Mn for
the first time. Population of the state was observed in Fe
and the cross-section determined by normalisation to the Ag target
excitation, confirming the value measured in recoil-distance lifetime

z'-band Ground-Based Detection of the Secondary Eclipse of WASP-19b
We present the ground-based detection of the secondary eclipse of the
transiting exoplanet WASP-19b. The observations were made in the Sloan z'-band
using the ULTRACAM triple-beam CCD camera mounted on the NTT. The measurement
shows a 0.088\pm0.019% eclipse depth, matching previous predictions based on H-
and K-band measurements. We discuss in detail our approach to the removal of
errors arising due to systematics in the data set, in addition to fitting a
model transit to our data. This fit returns an eclipse centre, T0, of
2455578.7676 HJD, consistent with a circular orbit. Our measurement of the
secondary eclipse depth is also compared to model atmospheres of WASP-19b, and
is found to be consistent with previous measurements at longer wavelengths for

Academic self-concept, gender and single-sex schooling
This paper assesses gender differences in academic self-concept for a cohort of children born in 1958 (the National Child Development Study). We address the question of whether attending single-sex or co-educational schools affected students’ perceptions of their own academic abilities (academic self-concept). Academic selfconcept was found to be highly gendered, even controlling for prior test scores. Boys had higher self-concepts in maths and science, and girls in English. Single-sex schooling reduced the gender gap in self-concept, while selective schooling was linked to lower academic self-concept overall
