    Roles of Education and IQ in Cognitive Reserve in Parkinson's Disease-Mild Cognitive Impairment.

    Background/aimsThe role of cognitive reserve in Parkinson's disease (PD)-mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is incompletely understood.MethodsThe relationships between PD-MCI, years of education, and estimated premorbid IQ were examined in 119 consecutive non-demented PD patients using logistic regression models.ResultsHigher education and IQ were associated with reduced odds of PD-MCI in univariate analysis. In multivariable analysis, a higher IQ was associated with a significantly decreased odds of PD-MCI, but education was not.ConclusionThe association of higher IQ and decreased odds of PD-MCI supports a role for cognitive reserve in PD, but further studies are needed to clarify the interaction of IQ and education and the impact of other contributors such as employment and hobbies

    A distal renal tubular acidosis showing hyperammonemia and hyperlactacidemia

    Introduction: distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) presents itself with variable clinical manifestations and often with late expressions that impact on prognosis. Case report: A 45-day-old male infant was admitted with stopping growth, difficult feeding and vomiting after meals. Clinical tests and labs revealed a type 1 renal tubular acidosis, even if the first blood tests showed ammonium and lactate increase. We had to exclude metabolic diseases before having a certain diagnosis. Conclusions: blood and urine investigations and genetic tests are fundamental to formulate dRTA diagnosis and to plan follow-up, according to possible phenotypic expressions of recessive and dominant autosomal forms in patients with dRTA

    The Neurotrophin Receptor TrkC as a Novel Molecular Target of the Antineuroblastoma Action of Valproic Acid

    Neurotrophins and their receptors are relevant factors in controlling neuroblastoma growth and progression. The histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor valproic acid (VPA) has been shown to downregulate TrkB and upregulate the p75NTR/sortilin receptor complex. In the present study, we investigated the VPA effect on the expression of the neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) receptor TrkC, a favorable prognostic marker of neuroblastoma. We found that VPA induced the expression of both full-length and truncated (TrkC-T1) isoforms of TrkC in human neuroblastoma cell lines without (SH-SY5Y) and with (Kelly, BE(2)-C and IMR 32) MYCN amplification. VPA enhanced cell surface expression of the receptor and increased Akt and ERK1/2 activation by NT-3. The HDAC inhibitors entinostat, romidepsin and vorinostat also increased TrkC in SH-SY5Y, Kelly and BE(2)-C but not IMR 32 cells. TrkC upregulation by VPA involved induction of RUNX3, stimulation of ERK1/2 and JNK, and ERK1/2-mediated Egr1 expression. In SH-SY5Y cell monolayers and spheroids the exposure to NT-3 enhanced the apoptotic cascade triggered by VPA. Gene silencing of both TrkC-T1 and p75NTR prevented the NT-3 proapoptotic effect. Moreover, NT-3 enhanced p75NTR/TrkC-T1 co-immunoprecipitation. The results indicate that VPA upregulates TrkC by activating epigenetic mechanisms and signaling pathways, and sensitizes neuroblastoma cells to NT-3-induced apoptosis

    Evolutionary Clustering of Apprentices' Self- Regulated Learning Behavior in Learning Journals

    Learning journals are increasingly used in vocational education to foster self-regulated learning and reflective learning practices. However, for many apprentices, documenting working experiences is a difficult task. In this article, we profile apprentices' learning behavior in an online learning journal. Based on a pedagogical framework, we propose a novel multistep clustering pipeline that integrates different learning dimensions into a combined profile. Specifically, the profiles are described in terms of effort, consistency, regularity, help-seeking behavior, and quality of the written entries. Our results on two populations of chef apprentices (183 apprentices) interacting with an online learning journal (over 121K entries) show that our pipeline captures changes in learning patterns over time and yields interpretable profiles that can be related to academic performance. The obtained profiles can be used as a basis for personalized interventions, with the ultimate goal of improving the apprentices' learning experience

    Growth of Listeria Monocytogenes in ready to eat salads at different storage temperatures and valuation of virulence genes expression

    BACKGROUND: Vegetables are major components of a healthy and balanced diet. However, 25% of foodborne diseases are linked to the consumption of vegetables. STUDY DESIGN: The aim of this work was to assess the microbiological risks associated with consumption of ready to eat salads (RTE). METHODS: Microbiological challenge tests were carried out for the evaluation of the L. monocytogenes growth potential in RTE salads stored at different temperatures. RESULTS: The results indicate that L.monocytogenes was able to grow (δ ≥ 0.5) in all storage conditions considered at the end of shelf life. In order to evaluate the virulence role of L. monocytogenes, the temperature-dependent transcription of major virulence genes was also investigated by RT-PCR. CONCLUSIONS: The microbiological challenge test allowed us to confirm, as also demonstrated by other authors, that RTE salads are able to support the growth of L. monocytogenes strains (d δ≥ 0.5) stored under different temperatures

    Intensity interferometry of single x-ray pulses from a synchrotron storage ring

    We report on measurements of second-order intensity correlations at the high brilliance storage ring PETRA III using a prototype of the newly developed Adaptive Gain Integrating Pixel Detector (AGIPD). The detector recorded individual synchrotron radiation pulses with an x-ray photon energy of 14.4 keV and repetition rate of about 5 MHz. The second-order intensity correlation function was measured simultaneously at different spatial separations that allowed to determine the transverse coherence length at these x-ray energies. The measured values are in a good agreement with theoretical simulations based on the Gaussian Schell-model.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 42 reference

    A remote sensing and modeling integrated approach for constructing continuous time series of daily actual evapotranspiration

    Satellite remote sensing-based surface energy balance (SEB) techniques have emerged as useful tools for quantifying spatialized actual evapotranspiration at various temporal and spatial scales. However, discontinuous data acquisitions and/or gaps in image acquisition due to cloud cover can limit the applicability of satellite remote sensing (RS) in agriculture water management where continuous time series of daily crop actual evapotranspiration (ETc act) are more valued. The aim of the research is to construct continuous time series of daily ETc act starting from temporal estimates of actual evapotranspiration obtained by SEB modelling (ETa eb) on Landsat-TM images. SEBAL model was integrated with the FAO 56 evaporation model, RS-retrieved vegetative biomass dynamics (by NDVI) and on-field measurements of soil moisture and potential evapotranspiration. The procedure was validated by an eddy covariance tower on a vineyard with partial soil coverage in the south of Sardinia Island, Italy. The integrated modeling approach showed a good reproduction of the time series dynamics of observed ETc act (R2 =0.71, MAE=0.54 mm d-1, RMSE=0.73 mm d-1). A daily and a cumulative monthly temporal analysis showed the importance of integrating parameters that capture changes in the soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) continuum between Landsat acquisitions. The comparison with daily ETc act obtained by the referenced ET fraction (ETrF) method that considers only weather variability (by ETo) confirmed the lead of the proposed procedure in the spring/early summer periods when vegetation biomass changes and soil water evaporation have a significant weight in the ET process. The applied modelling approach was also robust in constructing the missing ETc act data under scenarios of limited cloud-free Landsat acquisitions. The presented integrated approach has a great potential for the near real time monitoring and scheduling of irrigation practices. Further testing of this approach with diverse dataset and the integration with the soil water modeling is to be analyzed in future work

    An experimental study investigating the effect of pain relief from oral analgesia on lumbar range of motion, velocity, acceleration and movement irregularity

    Background Movement alterations are often reported in individuals with back pain. However the mechanisms behind these movement alterations are not well understood. A commonly cited mechanism is pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pain reduction, from oral analgesia, on lumbar kinematics in individuals with acute and chronic low back pain. Methods A prospective, cross-sectional, experimental repeated-measures design was used. Twenty acute and 20 chronic individuals with low back pain were recruited from General Practitioner and self-referrals to therapy departments for low back pain. Participants complained of movement evoked low back pain. Inertial sensors were attached to the sacrum and lumbar spine and used to measure kinematics. Kinematic variables measured were range of motion, angular velocity and angular acceleration as well as a determining movement irregularity (a measure of deviation from smooth motion). Kinematics were investigated before and after administration of oral analgesia to instigate pain reduction. Results Pain was significantly reduced following oral analgesia. There were no significant effects on the kinematic variables before and after pain reduction from oral analgesia. There was no interaction between the variables group (acute and chronic) and time (pre and post pain reduction). Conclusion The results demonstrate that pain reduction did not alter lumbar range of motion, angular velocity, angular acceleration or movement irregularity questioning the role of pain in lumbar kinematics
