Queer Slashers
Queer Slashers argues that slasher films invite queer engagements by staging collisions between a sexually deviant outsider, the slasher figure, and icons of American normativity: heterosexual teenage couples, suburbia, the prom, and summer camp, among others. To do so, Queer Slashers draws on horror and slasher scholarship along with queer theory and LGBT history. Slasher scholarship has already considered the ways in which gender plays an important role in the construction of the slasher formula. Much of this work has focused on the representation of women, especially patterns of violence against women. Queer Slashers seeks to make additional observations about the ways in which femininity more broadly, especially the characterization of killers as femme, sissy, trans or non-binary, has been a crucial component in the history of the genre. It argues that the killer and the survivors of the slasher can be read as queer, or non-normative, whereas the primary victims of the slasher often abide normative conventions of culture, including gender and sexuality. Queer Slashers interweaves close readings of slasher media with theoretical conceptions by scholars such as Michael Warner, Eve Sedgwick, and Cathy J. Cohen, which posit queerness as an intersectional political resistance to normativity, including but not limited to LGBT identities. Using LGBT history, Queer Slashers seeks to recognize important historical developments in the social awareness of LGBT identities, including political advocacy such as the homophile movement of the 1950s and gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s, as a meaningful context in which the slasher evolves
Degeneracy lifting of Majorana bound states due to electron-phonon interactions
We study theoretically how electron-phonon interaction affects the energies
and level broadening (inverse lifetime) of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in a
clean topological nanowire at low temperatures. At zero temperature, the energy
splitting between the right and left MBSs remains exponentially small with
increasing nanowire length . At finite temperatures, however, the absorption
of thermal phonons leads to the broadening of energy levels of the MBSs that
does not decay with system length, and the coherent absorption/emission of
phonons at opposite ends of the nanowire results in MBSs energy splitting that
decays only as an inverse power-law in . Both effects remain exponential in
temperature. In the case of quantized transverse motion of phonons, the
presence of Van Hove singularities in the phonon density of states causes
additional resonant enhancement of both the energy splitting and the level
broadening of the MBSs. This is the most favorable case to observe the
phonon-induced energy splitting of MBSs as it becomes much larger than the
broadening even if the topological nanowire is much longer than the coherence
length. We also calculate the charge and spin associated with the energy
splitting of the MBSs induced by phonons. We consider both a spinless
low-energy continuum model, which we evaluate analytically, as well as a
spinful lattice model for a Rashba nanowire, which we evaluate numerically
Consequences of Dominance-Mediated Habitat Segregation in American Redstarts During the Nonbreeding Season
Several species of migratory songbirds exhibit a distinct form of habitat segregation while on their Neotropical wintering grounds in which males and females occupy different habitat types. In the American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), that sexual habitat segregation is a result of behavioral dominance of older males. In that study, we examined whether such dominance behavior and the resulting differential habitat segregation has consequences for the condition or survival of excluded individuals. We quantified the physical condition and survival of redstarts (both males and females) occupying two habitat types that differed in the proportion of males and females present in Jamaica. Both sexes of redstarts occupying female-biased habitat lost significantly more mass over-winter and had lower annual survival and longevity compared to individuals in male-biased habitat. These results suggest that nonbreeding habitats differed in suitability, with the least suitable habitat being occupied predominately by females. Because most female redstarts are forced to over-winter in these kinds of habitats, they may often be in poor physiological condition prior to departing on spring migration for the breeding grounds. This in turn may influence dynamics of the breeding period by determining their condition and perhaps reproductive success. Furthermore, because winter habitat segregation appears to lower female survivorship, it may also limit the number and availability of breeding females. These results implicate events that occur during the nonbreeding period as playing a critical role in the annual dynamics of this migratory species
Food for thought : increasing nutritional diversity by adapting to droughts in Timor-Leste's permaculture/agroecology garden schools : a research project presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of International Development, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
The main aim of the research was to explore community resilience, and specifically whether and
how garden schools that use permaculture/agroecology principles may be usefully contributing to
adaptation to climate change and nutritional diversity in Timor-Leste. The research also aimed to
investigate the challenge of implementing garden schools in Timor-Leste. Specifically, targets of the
Sustainable Development Goals relating to water conservation, resilience and food security were
utilized to measure the progress of garden schools. The above is embedded in a conceptual
agroecology framework that assesses the resilience of food growing systems in relation to climate
change as the schools utilize permaculture/agroecology principles, with permaculture being a form
of agroecology.
Timor-Leste is now faced with extreme climate patterns as a result of climate change that can lead
to more prolonged droughts. This study used a qualitative methodolology, which included
interviews of teachers with school gardens, to help understand how teachers and their students are
adapting to these droughts. The study also examines nutritional diversity in schools and the benefits
and challenges of implementing school gardens. Furthermore, the study explores the transfer of
nutritional and gardening knowledge from schools to the community to increase community
resilience.
The research revealed that garden schools internationally improve students’ scientific understanding
and agricultural knowledge and their taste for locally grown fruit and vegetables. The school
gardens in Timor-Leste have multiple benefits with regard to improving educational outcomes and
community resilience as a school garden transforms a schoolyard into a green laboratory for
students to learn about nutrition, mathematics and linguistics
West Nile Virus and Wildlife Health
The West Nile Virus and Wildlife Health Workshop, hosted by the Smithsonian Institution, National Audubon Society, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Department of Agriculture, was held February 5–7, 2003, at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland. The event was attended by more than 100 scientists, who heard 29 speakers and participated in strategy discussions during the 2-day meeting. The main focus of the conference was the present and future impact of West Nile virus on wildlife populations. Talks and discussions emphasized how basic research, public health, and land management can contribute to our understanding of the disease’s impact and spread. A primary objective of this meeting was to develop future research priorities from both basic and applied perspectives. The conference centered around four main themes: 1) host, vector, and pathogen interactions (disease ecology); 2) vertebrate behavior and ecology; 3) vector behavior and ecology; and 4) modeling and spatial statistics. We describe some of the findings from the meeting. Winter Habitat Quality but not Long- distance Dispersal Influences Apparent Reproductive Success in a Migratory Bird
Long- distance breeding and natal dispersal play central roles in many ecological and evolutionary processes, including gene flow, population dynamics, range expansion, and individual responses to fluctuating biotic and abiotic conditions. However, the relative contribution of long- distance dispersal to these processes depends on the ability of dispersing individuals to successfully reproduce in their new environment. Unfortunately, due to the difficulties associated with tracking dispersal in the field, relatively little is known about its reproductive consequences. Furthermore, because reproductive success is influenced by a variety of processes, disentangling the influence of each of these processes is critical to understanding the direct consequences of dispersal. In this study, we used stable hydrogen and carbon isotopes to estimate long- distance dispersal and winter territory quality in a migratory bird, the American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla). We then applied Aster life-history models to quantify the strength of influence of these factors on apparent reproductive success. We found no evidence that male or female reproductive success was lower for long- distance dispersers relative to non- dispersing individuals. In contrast, carry- over effects from the winter season did influence male, but not female, reproductive success. Use of Aster models further revealed that for adult males, winter territory quality influenced the number of offspring produced whereas for yearling males, high- quality winter territories were associated with higher mating and nesting success. These results suggest that although long- distance natal and breeding dispersal carry no immediate reproductive cost for American Redstarts, reproductive success in this species may ultimately be limited by the quality of winter habitat
Telomere length, non-breeding habitat and return rate in male American redstarts
Telomeres are long repetitive noncoding sequences of DNA located at the ends of chromosomes. Recently, the study of telomere dynamics has been increasingly used to investigate ecological questions. However, little is currently known about the relationships that link environmental conditions, telomere dynamics and fitness in wild vertebrates. Using a small migratory bird (American redstart, Setophaga ruticilla), we investigated how telomere dynamics can be affected by non-breeding habitat quality and to what extent telomere length can predict the return rate of males. We show that telomeres shorten in most individuals over a 1-year period and, importantly, that telomeres of individuals wintering in a low-quality habitat shorten more than those of individuals wintering in a high-quality habitat. In addition, we found that longer telomeres are associated with a higher return rate than shorter telomeres, although the relationship between return rate and telomere length did not depend on habitat quality. Our study suggests that telomere dynamics are affected by environmental conditions and are related to indices of fitness in a migratory bird species
Characterizing avian survival along a rural-to-urban land use gradient
Many avian species persist in human-dominated landscapes; however, little is known about the demographic consequences of urbanization in these populations. Given that urban habitats introduce novel benefits (e.g., anthropogenic resources) and pressures (e.g., mortality risks), conflicting mechanisms have been hypothesized to drive the dynamics of urban bird populations. Top-down processes such as predation predict reduced survivorship in suburban and urban habitats, whereas bottom-up processes, such as increased resource availability, predict peak survival in suburban habitats. In this study, we use mark–recapture data of seven focal species encountered between 2000 and 2012 to test hypotheses about the processes that regulate avian survival along an urbanization gradient in greater Washington, D.C., USA. American Robin, Gray Catbird, Northern Cardinal, and Song Sparrow exhibited peak survival at intermediate and upper portions of the rural-to-urban gradient; this pattern supports the hypothesis that bottom-up processes (e.g., resource availability) can drive patterns of avian survival in some species. In contrast, Carolina Chickadee showed no response and Carolina and House Wren showed a slightly negative response to urban land cover. These contrasting results underscore the need for comparative studies documenting the mechanisms that drive demography and how those factors differentially affect urban adapted and urban avoiding species
How to capture wild passerine species to study baseline corticosterone levels
Baseline corticosterone levels have been suggested to be an effective tool to assess and monitor the health status of individuals and populations of wild birds. However, measuring baseline corticosterone levels in the field is difficult because the capture protocol may affect rates of corticosterone secretion. In passerine birds, two methods of capture are widely used: (1) passive netting consisting of monitoring mist-nets frequently to check if a bird has been caught; and (2) target netting consisting of installing a conspecific decoy and/or playing a tape-recorded conspecific song in the vicinity of a mist-net until the territorial bird is captured. Our objective here was to determine whether these methods of capture are effective at achieving non-disturbed baseline corticosterone levels in American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla). We found that passive netting was associated with elevated corticosterone levels, suggesting that hanging in a net for several minutes activates the HPA axis and, thus, elicits an adreno-cortical stress response. In contrast, target netting was not associated with an increase in corticosterone levels, regardless of the length of time between when the target bird first approached the net and when it was captured. Therefore, we suggest that researchers interested in estimated baseline corticosterone in this species use target netting and not passive netting
