    Benchmark calculations for reduced density-matrix functional theory

    Reduced density-matrix functional theory (RDMFT) is a promising alternative approach to the problem of electron correlation. Like standard density functional theory, it contains an unknown exchange-correlation functional, for which several approximations have been proposed in the last years. In this article, we benchmark some of these functionals in an extended set of molecules with respect to total and atomization energies. Our results show that the most recent RDMFT functionals give very satisfactory results compared to more involved quantum chemistry and density functional approaches.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur

    Excess Body Weight and Gait Influence Energy Cost of Walking in Older Adults

    Purpose: To study how excess body weight influences the energy cost of walking (Cw) and determine if overweight and obese older adults self-select stride frequency to minimize Cw. Methods: Using body mass index (BMI) men and women between the ages of 65–80 yr were separated into normal weight (NW, BMI ≀ 24.9 kg m−2, n = 13) and overweight-obese groups (OWOB, BMI ≄25.0 kg m−2, n = 13). Subjects walked at 0.83 m s−1 on an instrumented treadmill that recorded gait parameters, and completed three, six-minute walking trials; at preferred stride frequency (PSF), at +10% PSF, and at −10% PSF. Cw was determined by indirect calorimetry. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare groups, and associations were tested with Pearson correlations, α = 0.05. Results: OWOB had 62% greater absolute Cw (301 ± 108 vs. 186 ± 104 J m−1, P \u3c 0.001) and 20% greater relative Cwkg (3.48 ± 0.95 vs. 2.91 ± 0.94 J kg−1 m−1, P = 0.046) than NW. Although PSF was not different between OWOB and NW (P = 0.626), Cw was 8% greater in OWOB at +10% PSF (P \u3c 0.001). At PSF OWOB spent less time in single-limb support (33.1 ± 1.5 vs. 34.9 ± 1.6 %GC, P = 0.021) and more time in double-limb support (17.5 ± 1.6 vs. 15.4 ± 1.4 %GC, P = 0.026) than NW. In OWOB, at PSF, Cw was correlated to impulse (r = −0.57, P = 0.027) and stride frequency (r = 0.51, P = 0.046). Conclusions: Excess body weight is associated with greater Cw in older adults, possibly contributing to reduced mobility in overweight and obese older persons

    RF Power Amplifier Linearization in Professional Mobile Radio Communications Using Artificial Neural Networks

    This paper is focused on the linearization of the radio frequency power amplifier of a professional digital handheld by means of an artificial neural network. The simplicity of the neural network that is used, together with the fact that a feedback path is unnecessary, makes this solution ideal to reduce both the cost of a handheld and its hardware complexity, while fully maintaining its performance. A compensation system is also needed to keep the linearization characteristics of the neural network stable against frequency, temperature, and voltage variations. The whole solution that comprises both the neural network and the compensation system has been implemented in the digital signal processor of a real handheld and afterward fully tested. It has proved to be satisfactory to meet the telecommunication standard requirements in all frequency, temperature, and voltage ranges under consideration while efficient to lower the computational cost of the handheld and to make its internal hardware simpler in comparison with other traditional linearization techniques. The results obtained demonstrate that a neural network can be used to linearize the power amplifiers that are used in transmitters of telecommunication equipment, leading to a significant reduction of both their hardware cost and complexity

    In Situ Breakage of ImplanonÂź - Two Cases of a Rare Occurrence

    BACKGROUND: In situ breakage of ImplanonÂź is a rare occurrence with unknown clinical significance. Authors report two different cases of broken ImplanonÂź of women attended at our Family Planning Clinic. DISCUSSION: In situ implants may spontaneously and asymptomatically break, although some uncertainty relies on whether that situation has a real impact on the contraceptive effectiveness or on bleeding patterns. Even more, it can be argued if, as a result of an occurrence of that nature, the implant shall or shall not be removed before the envisaged 3-year period of effectiveness. CONCLUSION: Currently, the clinical significance of implant breakage remains unknown. The decision to remove a broken or bent implant should be based on clinical judgements considering patients' wishes

    Fat area and lipid droplet morphology of porcine oocytes during in vitro maturation with trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid and forskolin

    Lipid droplets (LD) in porcine oocytes form a dark mass reaching almost all cytoplasm. Herein we investigated changes in fat areas, cytoplasmic tone and LD morphology during in vitro maturation (IVM) of porcine oocytes cultured with 100mM trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10,c12 CLA) or 10mM forskolin at different time periods. Four groups were constituted: control, excipient, t10,c12 CLA and forskolin, with drugs being supplemented during 44 to 48h and the initial 22 to 24h in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. In Experiment 3, forskolin was supplemented for the first 2 h. Matured oocytes were inseminated with frozen-thawed boar semen and cleavage rate recorded. Before and during IVM, samples of oocytes were evaluated for LD, total and fat areas and fat gray value or for meiotic progression. Results showed that forskolin supplementation during 44 to 48 h or 22 to 24 h inhibits oocyte maturation (exp. 1: forskolin = 5.1±8.0%, control = 72.6±5.0%; exp. 2: forskolin =24.3±7.4%, control =71.6±5.6%) and cleavage (exp. 1: forskolin=0.0±0.0%, control=55.4±4.1%; exp. 2: forskolin=8.3±3.3%, control=54.5±3.0%). Forskolin also reduced oocyte and fat areas. In Experiment 3, forskolin negative effect on oocyte maturation and cleavage disappeared, although minor (P<0.03) LD and oocyte fat areas were identified at 22 to 24 h of IVM. Oocytes supplemented with t10,c12 CLA during 44 to 48h presented a lighter (P<0.04) colour tone cytoplasm than those of control and forskolin. In conclusion, t10,c12 CLA and forskolin were capable of modifying the distribution and morphology of cytoplasmic LD during porcine oocyte maturation, thus reducing its lipid content in a time-dependent manner

    The role of brand equity in a new rebranding strategy of a private label brand

    The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of the rebranding process on private label performance output, namely, on brand equity. More specifically, the study aims to investigate the performance of brand equity constructs (brand awareness, brand associations, perceived quality and brand loyalty) before and after the rebranding process. A questionnaire was administered to 466 shoppers, who put forth their perceptions, of the brand’s image, before and after the rebranding. When analyzed altogether, brand equity constructs have not suffered significant changes, meaning that previously existing brand equity had successfully been transferred onto the new brand; however, new brand equity was not created in the process. Consumers do still associate the private label brand image with its previous brand identity. Nevertheless, their ability to easily identify the various brand tiers was improved with the new image. Consumers associate the rebranded image with being “innovative” and “original” and describe the previous image as “inexpensive” and “trustworthy”. Brand awareness and loyalty are the factors that relate the most to consumers’ perceptions of the brand before its rebranding. This study contributes to the brand management literature by providing a new look into the under-researched problem of rebranding and brand equity, empirically validating the real-life market case.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    A Correction Function Method for Poisson problems with interface jump conditions

    In this paper we present a method to treat interface jump conditions for constant coefficients Poisson problems that allows the use of standard “black box” solvers, without compromising accuracy. The basic idea of the new approach is similar to the Ghost Fluid Method (GFM). The GFM relies on corrections applied on nodes located across the interface for discretization stencils that straddle the interface. If the corrections are solution-independent, they can be moved to the right-hand-side (RHS) of the equations, producing a problem with the same linear system as if there were no jumps, only with a different RHS. However, achieving high accuracy is very hard (if not impossible) with the “standard” approaches used to compute the GFM correction terms. In this paper we generalize the GFM correction terms to a correction function, defined on a band around the interface. This function is then shown to be characterized as the solution to a PDE, with appropriate boundary conditions. This PDE can, in principle, be solved to any desired order of accuracy. As an example, we apply this new method to devise a 4th order accurate scheme for the constant coefficients Poisson equation with discontinuities in 2D. This scheme is based on (i) the standard 9-point stencil discretization of the Poisson equation, (ii) a representation of the correction function in terms of bicubics, and (iii) a solution of the correction function PDE by a least squares minimization. Several applications of the method are presented to illustrate its robustness dealing with a variety of interface geometries, its capability to capture sharp discontinuities, and its high convergence rate.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant DMS-0813648)Brazil.
