    Video browsing interfaces and applications: a review

    We present a comprehensive review of the state of the art in video browsing and retrieval systems, with special emphasis on interfaces and applications. There has been a significant increase in activity (e.g., storage, retrieval, and sharing) employing video data in the past decade, both for personal and professional use. The ever-growing amount of video content available for human consumption and the inherent characteristics of video data—which, if presented in its raw format, is rather unwieldy and costly—have become driving forces for the development of more effective solutions to present video contents and allow rich user interaction. As a result, there are many contemporary research efforts toward developing better video browsing solutions, which we summarize. We review more than 40 different video browsing and retrieval interfaces and classify them into three groups: applications that use video-player-like interaction, video retrieval applications, and browsing solutions based on video surrogates. For each category, we present a summary of existing work, highlight the technical aspects of each solution, and compare them against each other

    Differential Blood Counts Do Not Consistently Predict Clinical Measurements of Bone Mineral Density and Microarchitecture at Homeostasis.

    The hematopoietic stem cell niche constitutes a complex bone marrow (BM) microenvironment. Osteoporosis is characterized by both reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and microarchitectural deterioration, constituting the most frequent alteration of the BM microenvironment. It is unclear to which extent modifications of the BM microenvironment, including in the context of osteoporosis, influence blood cell production. We aimed to describe the association between lumbar spine and total hip BMD and microarchitecture (assessed by trabecular bone score [TBS]) and differential blood counts. Data were collected at two time points from 803 (first assessment) and 901 (second assessment) postmenopausal women participating in the CoLaus/OsteoLaus cohort, a population-based sample in Lausanne, Switzerland. Participants with other active disease or treatment that could influence hematopoiesis or osteoporosis were excluded. Bivariate and multivariate associations between each peripheral blood cell count and BMD or TBS were performed. Additionally, participants in the highest BMD and TBS tertiles were compared with participants in the lowest BMD and TBS tertiles. At first assessment, only neutrophils were significantly different in the lowest BMD and TBS tertile (3.18 ± 0.09 versus 3.47 ± 0.08 G/L, p = 0.028). At the second assessment, leucocytes (5.90 ± 0.11 versus 5.56 ± 0.10 G/L, p = 0.033), lymphocytes (1.87 ± 0.04 versus 1.72 ± 0.04 G/L p = 0.033), and monocytes (0.49 ± 0.01 versus 0.46 ± 0.1 G/L, p = 0.033) were significantly different. Power analysis did not identify quasi-significant associations missed due to sample size. Although significant associations between blood counts and BMD or TBS were found, none was consistent across bone measurements or assessments. This study suggests that, at homeostasis and in postmenopausal women, there is no clinically significant association between the osteoporotic microenvironment and blood production output as measured by differential blood counts. In the context of conflicting reports on the relationship between osteoporosis and hematopoiesis, our study represents the first prospective two time-point analysis of a large, homogenous cohort at steady state. © 2022 The Authors.     Biomass and yield of peanut grown on tropical soil amended with sewage sludge contaminated with lead.

    Application of sewage sludge with high lead (Pb) contents may pollute soils and contaminate crops. The objective of this work was to evaluate peanut responses to application of sewage sludge with varying Pb contents in order to supply phosphorus (P) to the plant. A greenhouse experiment was carried out with peanut grown on soil sample from a medium-textured Haplustox. Treatments were arranged in 3×2 + 2 factorial scheme, replicated three times, distributed in randomized block design, and consisted of: three Pb rates applied to soil with sewage sludge (3, 21, and 42 mg kg?1)×two times of sewage sludge application (30 days before peanut sowing and at the day of the sowing) + mineral fertilization + control (without sewage sludge and mineral fertilization). Sewage sludge was e?cient to supply P to peanut. Sewage sludge containing high rates of Pb, when applied, did not harm biomass and yield of the plant, but increased HCl-extractable Pb in soil and Pb content in shoot, roots, and pod husks. Increase of Pb content in pod husks may represent contamination risk of kernels and their products with fragments from husks detached during manipulation or industrial processing of peanuts

    As transformações dos sistemas naturais nas regiões tropicais, geralmente cobertas por florestas com grande biomassa representam uma importante causa do aumento da concentração de CO2 atmosférico. Estimou-se a estocagem e a suscetibilidade potencial do carbono no solo do ecossistema sob floresta, até 2 m de profundidade, a partir da determinação da qualidade e a da quantidade do carbono orgânico nas diversas frações do solo em área de floresta primária na Amazônia Central. Fracionou-se a matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) por densidade e granulometria, obtendo-se: FLF (fração leve livre), FLIA (fração leve intra-agregada), F-areia (fração areia), F-argila (fração argila) e F-silte (fração silte). As amostras de solo para o fracionamento e análises físicas foram coletadas em posições topográficas distintas (platô, vertente e baixio), em parcelas de 20 m x 40 m, nas camadas entre 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, 80-100, 100-160 e 160-200 cm de profundidade. Na superfície, o carbono está estocado na fração leve livre (FLF) e em profundidade na fração pesada (F-argila). A distribuição do carbono nas frações do solo foram de 112,6 Mg ha-1 (FLF), 2,5 Mg ha-1 (FLIA), 40,5 Mg ha-1 (F-silte), 56,2 Mg ha-1 (F-argila) e 28,3 Mg ha-1 (F-areia). O carbono orgânico do solo (COS) estocado no platô (Latossolo), vertente (Argissolo) e baixio (Espodossolo) foi de 86,1 Mg ha-1, 72,6 Mg ha-1 e 81,4 Mg ha-1, respectivamente, potencializando uma capacidade de emissão para a atmosfera de 240,1 Mg ha-1

    Investigating interaction-induced chaos using time-dependent density functional theory

    Systems whose underlying classical dynamics are chaotic exhibit signatures of the chaos in their quantum mechanics. We investigate the possibility of using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to study the case when chaos is induced by electron-interaction alone. Nearest-neighbour level-spacing statistics are in principle exactly and directly accessible from TDDFT. We discuss how the TDDFT linear response procedure can reveal the mechanism of chaos induced by electron-interaction alone. A simple model of a two-electron quantum dot highlights the necessity to go beyond the adiabatic approximation in TDDFT.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Variações do carbono orgânico dissolvido e de atributos físicos do solo sob diferentes sistemas de uso da terra na Amazônia Central.

    O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar a relação entre C orgânico dissolvido (COD) e atributos físicos do solo em diferentes sistemas de uso da terra na Amazônia central. Quantificaram-se as concentrações de COD sob floresta primária, em três posições topográficas, e em áreas de pastagem, sucessão secundária e sistema agroflorestal (SAF) até a profundidade de 2 m. Instalaram-se extratores de solução do solo para coleta e análise do C da solução na fase orgânica durante um ciclo hidrológico. As concentrações médias de C orgânico dissolvido (COD) na solução do solo seguiram a ordem SAF ou sucessão secundária > floresta (platô) > pastagem (períodos seco e chuvoso-seco), exceto nos períodos chuvoso e seco-chuvoso, em que a pastagem iguala ou ultrapassa as concentrações de COD dos outros ambientes em determinadas profundidades. Os resultados demonstraram a capacidade do SAF e sucessão secundária em recuperar e, ou, disponibilizar o C na solução do solo, sendo formas de utilização do solo recomendadas para manter o C no ambiente terrestre. O COD apresentou variação temporal, espacial e em profundidade, decrescendo nesta última. A ação da estruturação do solo, representada pela agregação, C orgânico total (COT) e porosidade, exerce grande influência nas concentrações de COD nas camadas do solo e, aliada à matéria orgânica mais lábil do solo, determinam a manutenção do C na solução do solo. As concentrações de COD obtidas sob os diferentes ambientes estudados refletem a importância do manejo adequado do solo para a permanência do C no ecossistema do solo

    Soil organic carbon, carbon stock and their relationships to physical attributes under forest soils in Central Amazonia.

    The soil carbon under Amazonian forests has an important roles in global changing, making information on the soil content and depths of these stocks are considerable interest in efforts to quantify soil carbon emissions to the atmosphere.This study quantified the content and soil organic carbon stock under primary forest up to 2 m depth, at different topographic positions, at Cuieiras Biological Reserve, Manaus/ ZF2, km 34, in the Central Amazon, evaluating the soil attributes that may influence the permanence of soil carbon. Soil samples were collected along a transect of 850 m on topographic gradient Oxisol (plateau), Ultisol (slope) and Spodosol (valley). The stocks of soil carbon were obtained by multiplying the carbon content, soil bulk density and trickiness of soil layers. The watershed was delimited by using STRM and IKONOS images and the carbon contend obtained in the transects was extrapolated as a way to evaluate the potential for carbon stocks in an area of 2678.68 ha. The total SOC was greater in Oxisol followed by Spodosol and Ultisol. It was found direct correlations between the SOC and soil physical attributes. Among the clay soils (Oxisol and Ultisol), the largest stocks of carbon were observed in Oxisol at both the transect (90 to 175.5 Mg C ha-1) as the level of watershed (100.2 to 195.2 Mg C ha-1). The carbon stocks under sandy soil (Spodosol) was greater to clay soils along the transect (160-241 Mg C ha-1) and near them in the Watershed (96.90 to 146.01 Mg C ha-1)
