    DEVELOPING ABILITY IN ANSWERING READING QUESTION BY USING QUESTION-ANSWER RELATIONSHIPS TECHNIQUE

    The ability to comprehend the reading text is very crucial to assess the students’ understanding towards what they have read. The main goal is to derive some understanding of what the writer is trying to convey and make use of that. Unless the reader cannot gather any information and use it to efficiently function. A technique called Question-Answer Relationship (QARs) was used to assist students to gain the ability to comprehend the text. This technique was technically used to identify the type of response necessary to answer question. This technique requires the students to distinguish when it is appropriate to use background knowledge or textual information to answer the question. The objectives of this study were to find out the significant differences between students’ ability in answering questions of reading text, and to figure out whether the QARs technique were able to develop students ability in answering questions of reading text. The population of the study was all of the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Lembak consisting of 139 students from 5 classes. 60 students were selected by using cluster random sampling method and the samples were divided into two groups, experimental and control group. The test consisted of 40 multiple choice questions. The result of data analysis showed that t-obtained 2.006, where the critical 1.67, at the significance level of 5% and df 52. This showed that there were any significant differences in students’ ability in answering the question between the students who were taught by QARs and those who were not. And through this study, teaching reading by using question-answer relationships technique can significantly develop the students’ ability especially to the eighth graders at SMP Negeri 1 Lembak.     LANGUAGE FUNCTION IN BAZ LUHRMANN’S MOVIE THE GREAT GATSBY

    This research is aimed at figuring out the dominant type of language function used by five characters in The great Gatsby movie directed by Baz Luhrmann.This research applied a descriptive-qualitative method. The researchers used Holmes and Hazen’s theory to analyze the data. The results showed 304 utterances of language function  of 106 referential  and 198 expressive utterances. The first character, Nick Carraway uttered 25 referential utterances and 61 expressive utterances. The second one, Jay Gatsby uttered 37 referential utterances and 57 expressive utterances. The third one, Daisy Fay Buchanan uttered 12 referential utterances and 35 expressive utterances.The fourth one, Tom Buchanan uttered 28 referential utterances and 42 expressive utterances, and the last one, Myrtle Wilson uttered 4 referential utterances and 3 expressive utterances. In conclusion, the dominant type of language function found was expressive utterance of 198 expressions which was greater than referential utterances of 106 expressions

    The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was effective to teach skimming and scanning techniques in reading a narrative text by the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang. The method used experimental. The population of this study was all tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang. The sample of this study was 60 students. It indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It could be concluded that it was effective to teach reading comprehension by using skimming and scanning techniques to the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Gelumbang

    TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION BY USING PROBING-PROMPTING LEARNING STRATEGY TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 7 PALEMBANG

    The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach reading comprehension by using probing-prompting learning strategy. The researcher used pre experimental method. The population of the study was the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 7 Palembang was 337 students. The researcher took the sample 36 students by using the convenience sample. Analyzing the data was collected through a written test and calculated by SPSS 16. Based on the data analysis, the result of pretest indicated that the highest score was 70 and the lowest score was 50. In the result of t-test, it was founded that t-obtained was 9.574, so it was higher than the critical value of t-table was 1.690 with (df-1) n=35 at the level of significance 0.05 for one-tailed test. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted

    STUDENTS’PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF WHATSAPP IN WRITING ACTIVITIES: A CASE STUDY AT SMPN 1 PAGAR GUNUNG

    The aim of this study was conducted to find out the students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities at SMPN 1 Pagar Gunung. This study used a qualitative research design. The participants of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMPNegeri 1 Pagar Gunung which consisted of six students by usingpurposive sampling with maximum variation sampling. The data were collected by using semi-structured interview through open ended questions. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The findings of this study revealed that there were advantages and disadvantages on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities, as follows: (a) perceived progress of vocabulary, (b) independent from time and location, (c) internet connection problem, (d) costly to use, and (e) no grammatical improvement. Then, by knowing the students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities, the students can explore by themselves on the use of e-learning to upgrade the English proficiency

     Tujuan PKM ini untuk memberikan pemahaman  tentang pentingnya word stress  dan membantu guru bahasa Inggris  dalam melatih  siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang dalam menyebutkan kosakata buah-buahan dengan penekanan kosakata yang tepat  dalam bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan dan menarik.Hasil dari angket yang didistribusikan kepada kepalsa sekolah, guru dan 25 siswa menunjukan (1)Semua respondent (100%) menyatakan  pembuatan  media pembelajaran audio-visual  untuk  pengajaran word stress-oriented bertemakan fruits ini  bermanfaat  dalam membantu para guru dan para siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 menumbuhkan pemahaman tentang pentingnya word stress pada pronunciation (2)Media pembelajaran audio visual yang dibuat tim PKM merupakan media pembelajaran yang menarik  dan  para siswa merasa lebih tertarik , senang dan santai  saat pembelajaran  berlangsung. Dari segi kebermanfaatan dan tujuannya, hasil angket menunjukan  kegiatan PKM ini mampu  menumbuhkan motivasi para guru bahasa Inggris pada SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang untuk  membuat media pembelajaran yang kreatif dan inovatif  untuk pembelajaran bahasa inggris  yang lebih  variatif.       Keywords: audio visual, fruits, media, word stress-oriented

    The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it is effective to use think aloud strategy in teaching reading comprehension to the eleventh grade students at SMAN  9 Banyuasin. This research used quasi-experimental. The sample were 61 students which taken through convenience sampling. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. . The result of t-obtained was 4.649, t- table was 1.67. As we know, t-obtained was higher than  t-table. It means that it is effective to teach reading analytical exposition text by using think aloud Strategy to the eleventh grade students of  SMAN 9 Banyuasin

    THE USE OF THE FLY SWATTER GAME TO TEACH VOCABULARY MASTERY TO THE SEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS

    Vocabulary is one of language elements that are needed in learning and communication. The aimed of the study was to find out whether teaching vocabulary mastery using fly swatter game in vocabulary mastery significant or not. The method used quasi experimental method. The population of this research was all the seventh grade’ students of SMP Negeri 6 Palembang with total was 372 students. The samples took out were 68 students from 372 students by using purposive sampling method. They divided into the experimental and control group. The data were collected by using written test, those were pretest and posttest. The result of the test was analyzed by independent sample t-test. The mean in posttest of experimental group was 72.71, it was higher than the mean posttest of the control group which was 58.65. The result of T-Test obtained significance (sig. 2 tailed) was 0.002, which less or lower than 0.05. Since the sig. 2 tailed was less than 0.05, so the null hypothesis Ho was rejected and the alternative hypothesis Ha was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery taught using Fly Swatter game than those who are not.

    IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY THROUGH SOCIOGRAM IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 7 PALEMBANG

    This thesis entitled “Improving the Students’ Writing Ability through Sociogram in Writing Descriptive text to the Eighth Students of Junior High School 7 Palembang. The objective of this study is to find out whether sociogram is effective or not to improve the students’ writing ability of the eighth grade students of junior high school 7 Palembang in writing descriptive text. The problem of this study was “is it effective to improve the students’ writing ability of the eighth grade students of junior high school 7 Palembang by using sociogram in writing descriptive text?.” The writer used pre-experimental method one group design pre-test and post-test. The population of this study was all of the eighth grade students of junior high school 7 Palembang in academic year 2017/ 2018. The sample is one class (VIII.2) that consist of 37 students that chose by using cluster random sampling. In the result of the study, the average of students score in post-test was 82.4, it was highest than pre-test that was 67.8. In post-test the highest score was 89 and the lowest score was 78. To compare the students’ scores in pretest and posttest, paired t-test was used. And the result of paired t-test we found that, t-obtained was 26.6 and t-table was 1.68. It means that t-obtained was higher than t-table (27.317>1.688). And from the result of the interpretation above we can conclude that improving the students writing descriptive through sociogram was effective

    Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini didasarkan pada dua rumusan masalah dan tujuan yang berhubungan dengan tingkat kesadaran remaja-remaja Karang Taruna “Tunas Mulia” akan pentingnya belajar TOEFL dan juga efektivitas pelatihan TOEFL dalam meningkatkan skor tes TOEFL mereka. Penulis menerapkan integrated method (metode terpadu) melalui ceramah, presentasi dan diskusi terarah selama pelatihan berlangsung dan semua peserta terlihat antusias dan semangat dalam mengerjakan soal-soal yang diberikan. Singkatnya, mereka semua mampu menyelesaikan soal-soal TOEFL tepat pada waktunya dan sebagian besar mereka mendapatkan skor TOEFL yang sangat memuaskan diatas rata-rata nilai skor TOEFL pada umumnya. Manfaat yang bisa diperoleh bagi peserta selama mengikuti pelatihan TOEFL, Peserta dapat  meningkatkan kemampuan dasar (Basic Competency) bahasa Inggris yang sangat dibutuhkan ketika mengikuti tes TOEFL yang sesungguhnya
