The Dynamics of Store Hour Changes and Consumption Behavior: Results of a Longitudinal Study of Consumer Attitudes toward Saturday Shopping in Germany
Americans who travel internationally are often shocked to discover retail outlets closed during weekend and evening hours in cities such as Paris, Rome and Berlin. Fortunately, based on the implicit assumption that demand clearly exists, retailers at various locations throughout the globe have increased their hours of operation. While political debate regarding a variety of issues (costs, the rights of labor, religion, etc.) often rages, there has been an implicit assumption that latent demand for longer hours of operation exists. Our study investigates through a longitudinal examination consumer perceptions of Saturday shopping in a country where such an activity was previously restricted. Specifically, we study perceptions of Saturday shopping among a sample of German college students who were raised with limited Saturday shopping hours. Data were gathered in 1996 â the year German legislation allowed expanded hours for retailers â and again in 1999, and comparisons are made. Strong differences are found between consumer attitudes towards Saturday shopping at the time of expansion and three years later, indicating the need for differentiating retail strategies in Germany and in other parts of the world that may soon be providing similar expanded retail access.Agribusiness,
How collective asperity detachments nucleate slip at frictional interfaces
Sliding at a quasi-statically loaded frictional interface can occur via
macroscopic slip events, which nucleate locally before propagating as rupture
fronts very similar to fracture. We introduce a novel microscopic model of a
frictional interface that includes asperity-level disorder, elastic interaction
between local slip events, and inertia. For a perfectly flat and homogeneously
loaded interface, we find that slip is nucleated by avalanches of asperity
detachments of extension larger than a critical radius governed by a
Griffith criterion. We find that after slip, the density of asperities at a
local distance to yielding presents a pseudo-gap , where is a non-universal exponent that depends on
the statistics of the disorder. This result makes a link between friction and
the plasticity of amorphous materials where a pseudo-gap is also present. For
friction, we find that a consequence is that stick-slip is an extremely slowly
decaying finite size effect, while the slip nucleation radius diverges as
a -dependent power law of the system size. We discuss how these
predictions can be tested experimentally
Theory for the density of interacting quasi-localised modes in amorphous solids
Quasi-localised modes appear in the vibrational spectrum of amorphous solids
at low-frequency. Though never formalised, these modes are believed to have a
close relationship with other important local excitations, including shear
transformations and two-level systems. We provide a theory for their frequency
density, , that establishes this link for
systems at zero temperature under quasi-static loading. It predicts two regimes
depending on the density of shear transformations (with
the additional stress needed to trigger a shear transformation). If
, and a finite fraction of quasi-localised modes form
shear transformations, whose amplitudes vanish at low frequencies. If
, and all quasi-localised modes form shear
transformations with a finite amplitude at vanishing frequencies. We confirm
our predictions numerically
Eigenlevel statistics of the quantum adiabatic algorithm
We study the eigenlevel spectrum of quantum adiabatic algorithm for
3-satisfiability problem, focusing on single-solution instances. The properties
of the ground state and the associated gap, crucial for determining the running
time of the algorithm, are found to be far from the predictions of random
matrix theory. The distribution of gaps between the ground and the first
excited state shows an abundance of small gaps. Eigenstates from the central
part of the spectrum are, on the other hand, well described by random matrix
theory.Comment: 8 pages, 10 ps figure
DNA loop statistics and torsional modulus
The modelling of DNA mechanics under external constraints is discussed. Two
analytical models are widely known, but disagree for instance on the value of
the torsional modulus. The origin of this embarassing situation is located in
the concept of writhe. This letter presents a unified model for DNA
establishing a relation between the different approaches. I show that the
writhe created by the loops of DNA is at the origin of the discrepancy. To take
this into account, I propose a new treatment of loop statistics based on
numerical simulations using the most general formula for the writhe, and on
analytic calculations with only one fit parameter. One can then compute the
value of the torsional modulus of DNA without the need of any cut-off.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Accepted by Europhysics Letter
Area-Constrained Planar Elastica
We determine the equilibria of a rigid loop in the plane, subject to the
constraints of fixed length and fixed enclosed area. Rigidity is characterized
by an energy functional quadratic in the curvature of the loop. We find that
the area constraint gives rise to equilibria with remarkable geometrical
properties: not only can the Euler-Lagrange equation be integrated to provide a
quadrature for the curvature but, in addition, the embedding itself can be
expressed as a local function of the curvature. The configuration space is
shown to be essentially one-dimensional, with surprisingly rich structure.
Distinct branches of integer-indexed equilibria exhibit self-intersections and
bifurcations -- a gallery of plots is provided to highlight these findings.
Perturbations connecting equilibria are shown to satisfy a first order ODE
which is readily solved. We also obtain analytical expressions for the energy
as a function of the area in some limiting regimes.Comment: 23 pages, several figures. Version 2: New title. Changes in the

Reply to Comment on "Exact analytic solution for the generalized Lyapunov exponent of the 2-dimensional Anderson localization"
We reply to comments by P.Marko, L.Schweitzer and M.Weyrauch
[preceding paper] on our recent paper [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 63, 13777
(2002)]. We demonstrate that our quite different viewpoints stem for the
different physical assumptions made prior to the choice of the mathematical
formalism. The authors of the Comment expect \emph{a priori} to see a single
thermodynamic phase while our approach is capable of detecting co-existence of
distinct pure phases. The limitations of the transfer matrix techniques for the
multi-dimensional Anderson localization problem are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in J.Phys.: Condens. Mat
