    Cartographic Trend Analysis of Furbearer Harvest Distributions in Arkansas

    Average by-county fur harvest for the last nine harvest seasons (1977-1985) was used as data points to be interpolated using nearest neighbor algorithms in computer-assisted trend analyses. COMPLOT maps were produced which represented a surface of harvest densities drawn over a map of Arkansas. Twelve furbearer species are examined, and topographic features of harvest density for each are interpreted in terms of ecology and/or buyer distribution. The trend surface technique removed some of the error inherent to harvest records, and produced an aesthetic graphical display of the information that was more easily interpreted and explained than other methods of analysis usually allow

    Local interaction Strategies and Capacity for Better Care in Nursing Homes: A Multiple Case Study

    To describe relationship patterns and management practices in nursing homes (NHs) that facilitate or pose barriers to better outcomes for residents and staff. Methods: We conducted comparative, multiple-case studies in selected NHs (N = 4). Data were collected over six months from managers and staff (N = 406), using direct observations, interviews, and document reviews. Manifest content analysis was used to identify and explore patterns within and between cases. Results: Participants described interaction strategies that they explained could either degrade or enhance their capacity to achieve better outcomes for residents; people in all job categories used these 'local interaction strategies'. We categorized these two sets of local interaction strategies as the 'common pattern' and the 'positive pattern' and summarize the results in two models of local interaction. Conclusions: The findings suggest the hypothesis that when staff members in NHs use the set of positive local interaction strategies, they promote inter-connections, information exchange, and diversity of cognitive schema in problem solving that, in turn, create the capacity for delivering better resident care. We propose that these positive local interaction strategies are a critical driver of care quality in NHs. Our hypothesis implies that, while staffing levels and skill mix are important factors for care quality, improvement would be difficult to achieve if staff members are not engaged with each other in these ways.National Institutes of Health 2 R01NR003178-04A2Claude A.     Vibrant, livable communities rely on healthy, well-educated and engaged residents to sustain them. This is not a controversial statement at face value, although some might argue about the means by which to achieve this outcome (e.g. importing a trained labor force versus educating and cultivating indigenous talent). Most policy makers believe a balanced approach is necessary to address ongoing human capital needs, with robust partnerships between public institutions and the private sector leading the way. The reasons for this are fairly clear. Without a set of committed and highly functioning educational institutions in local communities, labor markets begin to falter and the most vulnerable neighborhoods succumb to the economic and social manifestations of persistent poverty, hopelessness and violence

    Textual enhancements and comprehension with adult readers of English is China

    The present study utilizes texts from social psychology to examine the effects of textual enhancements on reading comprehension with 185 native adult Chinese speakers learning English in China. Participants read two different vignettes, either with or without an adjunct. Each adjunct consisted of a ‘what’ question along with instructions to either ‘pause and consider’ or ‘pause and write.’ Participants also completed written recall, sentence completion, multiple-choice, and a topic familiarity question. Across passages, findings revealed significant effects of passage version on comprehension as measured via recall and sentence completion and no significant effects of passage version on multiple-choice questions. Participants scored almost the same on recall and sentence completion for versions with no adjuncts and versions with ‘pause and consider’ adjuncts, and they scored significantly lower on these assessment tasks for the version with pause and write adjuncts. Participants scored the same on multiple-choice questions for all three versions of both passages

    Realizing complex delayed intentions in young and old adults: The role of planning aids

    Although it has been suggested that the delayed realization of intended actions should benefit from appropriate intention planning, empirical evidence on this issue is scarce. In three experiments, we examined whether and which planning aids provided in the intention formation phase affect delayed intention realization in young and old adults. One finding was that intention planning directly affected delayed intention realization: instructing participants to include the cue for appropriate intention initiation in their plans benefited delayed performance. Another finding was that older adults' performance was improved when they were guided in structuring their plan in combination with guidance in implementing this plan after a delay. In sum, the results point to the importance of plan-related factors for understanding the delayed realization of intended action

    Event versus activity-based cues and motivation in school-related prospective memory tasks

    Prospective memory (PM), the ability to remember an intention in the future, is essential to children’s everyday lives. We explored age differences (6- to 7- vs. 10- to 11-year-olds) in PM depending on the nature of the task and the children’s motivation. Children performed event-based PM tasks (in which the cue was presented during the ongoing activity) and activity-based PM tasks (in which the cue consisted of finishing the ongoing activity). Additionally, the children were assigned to either a reward condition or a no-reward condition. The results showed better performance in event than in activity based tasks, with older children outperforming younger children in both. There was a marginal effect of reward for PM accuracy.     Improved Functional Prediction of Hypothetical Proteins from \u3ci\u3eListeria monocytogenes\u3c/i\u3e 08-5578

    Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne human pathogen responsible for listerosis. The genomes of several L. monocytogenes strains have been recently sequenced. The genome of L. monocytogenes 08-5578, which was in part responsible for a significant listerosis outbreak in 2008, contains an unexpectedly high percentage of protein-encoding genes (1,927 out of 3,161; 60.96%) autonomously annotated as hypothetical proteins. The aim of this study was to test whether a manual annotation strategy could be used to assign more meaningful functional names to the hypothetical proteins of 08-5578. A holistic, manual gene annotation strategy that utilized sequence homology, cellular localization predictions, structure-based evidence, phylogeny, and proteinprotein interaction data was used to assign potential cellular roles to 79 out of 100 hypothetical proteins randomly selected from the genome of 08-5578. Of significance, 5 of the 79 hypothetical proteins assigned a more meaningful name may contribute to the virulence of L. monocytogenes 08-5578, by contributing to chemotaxis, cell surface protein sorting, cell wall biosynthesis, and cold adaptation. The findings here support the notion that manual annotations, using a combination of diverse bioinformatics tools, can improve the quality of genomic information provided by automated genome annotation methods alone
