    Fundamental Limits of Classical and Quantum Imaging

    Quantum imaging promises increased imaging performance over classical protocols. However, there are a number of aspects of quantum imaging that are not well understood. In particular, it has so far been unknown how to compare classical and quantum imaging procedures. Here, we consider classical and quantum imaging in a single theoretical framework and present general fundamental limits on the resolution and the deposition rate for classical and quantum imaging. The resolution can be estimated from the image itself.     Phylogenetic relationships of the Wolbachia of nematodes and arthropods

    Wolbachia are well known as bacterial symbionts of arthropods, where they are reproductive parasites, but have also been described from nematode hosts, where the symbiotic interaction has features of mutualism. The majority of arthropod Wolbachia belong to clades A and B, while nematode Wolbachia mostly belong to clades C and D, but these relationships have been based on analysis of a small number of genes. To investigate the evolution and relationships of Wolbachia symbionts we have sequenced over 70 kb of the genome of wOvo, a Wolbachia from the human-parasitic nematode Onchocerca volvulus, and compared the genes identified to orthologues in other sequenced Wolbachia genomes. In comparisons of conserved local synteny, we find that wBm, from the nematode Brugia malayi, and wMel, from Drosophila melanogaster, are more similar to each other than either is to wOvo. Phylogenetic analysis of the protein-coding and ribosomal RNA genes on the sequenced fragments supports reciprocal monophyly of nematode and arthropod Wolbachia. The nematode Wolbachia did not arise from within the A clade of arthropod Wolbachia, and the root of the Wolbachia clade lies between the nematode and arthropod symbionts. Using the wOvo sequence, we identified a lateral transfer event whereby segments of the Wolbachia genome were inserted into the Onchocerca nuclear genome. This event predated the separation of the human parasite O. volvulus from its cattle-parasitic sister species, O. ochengi. The long association between filarial nematodes and Wolbachia symbionts may permit more frequent genetic exchange between their genomes

    Changing levels of local crime and mental health: a natural experiment using self-reported and service use data in Scotland

    Background: This study contributes robust evidence on the association between mental health and local crime rates by showing how changing exposure to small area-level crime relates to self-reported and administrative data on mental health. Methods: The study sample comprised 112 251 adults aged 16ā€“60 years, drawn from the Scottish Longitudinal Study, a 5.3% representative sample of Scottish population followed across censuses. Outcomes were individual mental health indicators: self-reported mental illness from the 2011 Census and linked administrative data on antidepressants and antipsychotics prescribed through primary care providers in the National Health Service in 2010/2012. Crime rates at data zone level (500ā€“1000 persons) were matched to the participantsā€™ main place of residence, as defined by general practitioner patient registration duration during 2004/2006, 2007/2009 and 2010/12. Average neighbourhood crime exposure and change in area crime were computed. Covariate-adjusted logistic regressions were conducted, stratified by moving status. Results: In addition to average crime exposure during follow-up, recent increases in crime (2007/2009ā€“2010/2012) were associated with a higher risk of self-reported mental illness, among ā€˜stayersā€™ aged 16ā€“30 years (OR=1.11; 95% CI 1.00 to 1.22), and among ā€˜moversā€™ aged 31ā€“45 years (OR=1.07; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.13). Prescribed medications reinforced these findings; worsening crime rates were linked with antidepressant prescriptions among young stayers (OR=1.09; 95% CI 1.04 to 1.14) and with antipsychotic prescriptions among younger middle-aged movers (OR=1.11; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.23). Conclusion: Changing neighbourhood crime exposure is related to individual mental health, but associations differ by psychiatric conditions, age and moving status. Crime reduction and prevention, especially in communities with rising crime rates, may benefit public mental health

    Nonlinear Soil Response in the Near-Field of a Vibrator Truck: Application to Land Seismic Surveys

    The nonlinear behavior of soils can significantly modify the wavelet radiated from vibrator trucks. In this paper, we describe a field experiment designed to measure the nonlinear response of a natural soil formation in the near-field of a vibrator truck. A 267-kN (30-ton) vibrator truck performed a step-sweep through a set of 201 discrete frequencies from 50-Hz to 10-Hz, which was repeated at 11 increasing source amplitudes. Steady-state amplitude spectra for the source output measured on the vibrator truck are significantly different than amplitude spectra for receivers located immediately adjacent to the vibrator truck. Spectral ratios between the source and adjacent receivers show a systematic decrease in peak frequency as the source amplitude is increased. Near-field measurements from vibrator trucks provide a more accurate measurement of the source wavelet that includes soil nonlinearity, and may ultimately lead to a method for optimizing the transmission of energy through an arbitrary soil formation.University of California, Los Angeles.     Fracture Density Estimation Using Spectral Analysis of Reservoir Reflections: A Numerical Modeling Approach

    We use a 3-D finite difference numerical model to generate synthetic seismograms from a simple fractured reservoir containing evenly spaced, discrete, vertical fractures. The fractures are represented using a single column of anisotropic grid points. Analysis of seismic amplitudes and spectral characteristics were carried out on the top and base reservoir reflections as well as scattered wave coda for models with fracture spacing ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 fractures/m. Results show that the bulk scattered wave energy contained in a common shot gather increases greatly when the fracture spacing is greater than about 1/4 wavelength. Wavenumber spectra for integrated amplitude versus offset from a time window containing the base reservoir reflector show spectral peaks corresponding to the fracture spacing.United States.     E. coli O157 on Scottish cattle farms: evidence of local spread and persistence using repeat cross-sectional data

    <b>Background</b><p></p> Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157 is a virulent zoonotic strain of enterohaemorrhagic E. coli. In Scotland (1998-2008) the annual reported rate of human infection is 4.4 per 100,000 population which is consistently higher than other regions of the UK and abroad. Cattle are the primary reservoir. Thus understanding infection dynamics in cattle is paramount to reducing human infections.<p></p> A large database was created for farms sampled in two cross-sectional surveys carried out in Scotland (1998 - 2004). A statistical model was generated to identify risk factors for the presence of E. coli O157 on farms. Specific hypotheses were tested regarding the presence of E. coli O157 on local farms and the farms previous status. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) profiles were further examined to ascertain whether local spread or persistence of strains could be inferred.<p></p> <b>Results</b><p></p> The presence of an E. coli O157 positive local farm (average distance: 5.96km) in the Highlands, North East and South West, farm size and the number of cattle moved onto the farm 8 weeks prior to sampling were significant risk factors for the presence of E. coli O157 on farms. Previous status of a farm was not a significant predictor of current status (p = 0.398). Farms within the same sampling cluster were significantly more likely to be the same PFGE type (p < 0.001), implicating spread of strains between local farms. Isolates with identical PFGE types were observed to persist across the two surveys, including 3 that were identified on the same farm, suggesting an environmental reservoir. PFGE types that were persistent were more likely to have been observed in human clinical infections in Scotland (p < 0.001) from the same time frame.<p></p> <b>Conclusions</b><p></p> The results of this study demonstrate the spread of E. coli O157 between local farms and highlight the potential link between persistent cattle strains and human clinical infections in Scotland. This novel insight into the epidemiology of Scottish E. coli O157 paves the way for future research into the mechanisms of transmission which should help with the design of control measures to reduce E. coli O157 from livestock-related sources

    Phase Heritage: Deciphering Evidence of Pre-Existing Phases via Inherited Crystallographic Orientations

    The concept of 'phase heritage' (e.g., Timms et al., 2017a) involves microstructural recognition of the former presence of a phase that has since transformed to another via evidence encoded in crystallographic orientations. Phase heritage relies on the phenomenon that newly grown (daughter) phases nucleate with particular crystallographic orientation relationships with the preceding (parent) phase. This phenomenon is common for displacive (i.e., shear or martensitic) transformations, well documented in the metals and ceramics literature, but is relatively uncommon in geosciences. This presentation outlines the concepts behind this approach, showcases results from software for automated analysis of EBSD data, and illustrates examples of polymorphic and dissociation phase transformations in the ZrSiO4-ZrO2-SiO2 system, which has particularly useful applications for 'extreme thermobarometry' in impact environments (Timms et al., 2017a)
