This paper presents, from an emic perspective, the social benefits and costs as perceived by local residents in Bays of Huatulco, one of the most important tourism destinations in Mexico. Based on qualitative research techniques, the study revealed that the economic contribution to the local community and the supply of job opportunities are positively perceived by the interviewees. On the other hand, the research showed that litter on the streets and beaches is perceived as one of the most important costs at a community level.

Educating Cancer Prevention Researchers in Emerging Biobehavioral Models: Lessons Learned

To increase the adoption of transdisciplinary research methods among future cancer prevention investigators, faculty members from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center developed a graduate-level course in biobehavioral methods in cancer prevention research. Two instructors paired by topic and area of expertise offered an hour-long lecture-based seminar every week for 15 weeks during the spring semester of 2010. Students and presenters both evaluated the overall course content and delivery method, as well as each session. A total of 11 students and 22 presenters participated in the course. In each class session, one presenter was from a behavioral science background, and the other was from a biological sciences background. Both presenters and students expressed overall satisfaction with the content and format of the course. The presentation of topics from a transdisciplinary perspective and interaction with presenters from both biological and behavioral sciences are valuable and can help junior researchers prepare to meet the emerging challenges in cancer prevention research

Two ureido-pyridyl ligands, 1-(4-nitro-phenyl)-3-pyridine-3-ylmethyl-urea (L1) and 1-pentafluorophenyl-3-pyridine-4-yl-urea (L2) were synthesized in good yields, and solid-state anion binding studies of (HL1)+ and (HL2)+ with polyatomic anions such as NO3−, AcO−, ClO4−, SO42−, and SiF62− were carried out in detail. Protonation of the pyridyl nitrogen center of L1 with HNO3, HClO4, and HF in different solvent media yielded crystals of complexes 1 (HL1·NO3), 2 (HL1·ClO4), and 3 (HL1·0.5SiF6) suitable for single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, respectively. Similarly, protonation of L2 with HNO3, CH3COOH, and H2SO4 yielded single crystals of complexes 4 [2(HL2·NO3)·DMF], 5 (HL2·AcO), and 6 [(HL2)2·SO4], respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysis of all these six complexes has been carried out and the details of anion binding with the urea functionality of ureido-pyridyl ligands were investigated. In all the complexes, the pyridyl moiety of the ligands is found to be protonated and the binding of anions are observed at the urea functionality of the ligands through the R22(8) hydrogen bonding motif irrespective of sizes and shapes of anions or the electron withdrawing ability of aryl substitutions (p-nitro phenyl vs pentafluoro phenyl) or the position of the pyridyl nitrogen center (protonation site) of the designed ligands

Anion-assisted formation of discrete homodimeric and heterotetrameric assemblies by benzene based protonated heteroaryl receptors

Anion-assisted formation of discrete homodimeric and heterotetrameric assemblies by benzene based protonated heteroaryl receptors L1–L6 have been studied thoroughly by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Crystallographic results elucidate the fact that protonated tripodal receptor L1 formed staggered homodimeric capsular assemblies 2 and 3 with CF3COO– and ClO4– ions, respectively. Protonation of L3 with trimesic acid also showed the formation homodimeric assembly, 6. In all these cases the anions are hydrogen bonded to the receptor molecules and show remarkable influence on the outcome of the self-assembly process to form discrete capsules. The necessity of the alkyl substitution on the benzene platform has been established from complexes 8, 9, and 10, which were obtained upon protonation of L6 with HNO3, HI, and HClO4, respectively. Interestingly, when a 1:1 mixture of L1 (tripodal) and L5 (dipodal) were treated with HClO4 and HBF4, discrete heterotetrameric assemblies have been isolated as complexes 11 and 12. The detailed solid state structural analysis of these complexes revealed the formation of heterotetrameric assemblies assisted by anion–water clusters. Correlation of these solid state structural assemblies with our previously reported complexes 1, 4, 5, and 7 has also been described. The role of anionic templates in assisting the formation of discrete capsular assemblies from receptors possessing heteroaryl units and 1,3,5-methyl substituted benzene platform has been established
