Geosite assessment and communication: a review
This work is aimed at reviewing the current state of the art in geosite selection, assessment, and communication. We first highlight the main papers that have defined paramount concepts such as geodiversity, geoheritage, and geosites. We then delve into the theoretical principles and guidelines that have been proposed over the last twenty years by researchers who have thoroughly illustrated how to individuate and assess geosites. In doing so, we illustrate notable field examples of applications of qualitative and quantitative assessments of geosites in places such as Serbia, India, Iceland, Ecuador, Sardinia (Italy), Egypt, Tasmania (Australia), and Brazil. The third part of this work is dedicated to illustrating a list (by no means exhaustive) of works that have tried to come up with innovative tools, strategies, and solutions to promote and communicate geosites. From our work, it appears that geosites can be extremely effective as fully fledged outreach tools capable of bridging the gap between Earth science and the lay public
Investigating the high energy QCD approaches for prompt photon production at the LHC
We investigate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the
prompt photon production at the CERN LHC energies considering the current
perturbative QCD approaches for this scattering process. Namely, we compare the
predictions from the usual NLO pQCD calculations to the the color dipole
formalism, using distinct dipole cross sections. Special attention is paid to
parton saturation models at high energies, which are expected to be important

Trichobezoars are concretions formed by the accumulation of hair or fibers in the gastrointestinal tract, usually associated with underlying psychiatric disorders in females between 13 and 20 years old. Endoscopy, the gold standard for diagnosis, brings some additional advantages: sample taking, size reducing and, rarely, mass removal. This study shows that endoscopy can cause severe complications resulting in a surgical emergency

Integrating virtual reality and gis tools for geological mapping, data collection and analysis: An example from the metaxa mine, santorini (Greece)
In the present work we highlight the effectiveness of integrating different techniques and tools for better surveying, mapping and collecting data in volcanic areas. We use an Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) approach for data collection, integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis in a well-known volcanological site in Santorini (Metaxa mine), a site where volcanic processes influenced the island’s industrial development, especially with regard to pumice mining. Specifically, we have focused on: (i) three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution IVR scenario building, based on Structure from Motion photogrammetry (SfM) modeling; (ii) subsequent geological survey, mapping and data collection using IVR; (iii) data analysis, e.g., calculation of extracted volumes, as well as production of new maps in a GIS environment using input data directly from the IVR survey; and finally, (iv) presentation of new outcomes that highlight the importance of the Metaxa Mine as a key geological and volcanological geosite
Color Evaporation and Elastic Photoproduction at DESY HERA
The diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons is usually described
considering the two-gluon (Pomeron) exchange, non-diagonal parton distributions
and the contribution of the real part to the cross section. In this letter we
analyze the diffractive photoproduction of the at HERA using an
alternative model, the Color Evaporation Model (CEM), where the cross section
is simply determined by the boson-gluon cross section and an assumption for the
production of the colorless state. We verify that, similarly to the
case, the HERA data for this process can be well described by the CEM.

Pinus mugo essential oil impairs STAT3 activation through oxidative stress and induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells
Essential oils (EOs) and their components have been reported to possess anticancer properties and to increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy. The aim of this work was to select EOs able to downregulate STAT3 signaling using Western blot and RT-PCR analyses. The molecular mechanism of anti-STAT3 activity was evaluated through spectrophotometric and fluorometric analyses, and the biological effect of STAT3 inhibition was analyzed by flow cytometry and wound healing assay. Herein, Pinus mugo EO (PMEO) is identified as an inhibitor of constitutive STAT3 phosphorylation in human prostate cancer cells, DU145. The down-modulation of the STAT3 signaling cascade decreased the expression of anti-proliferative as well as anti-apoptotic genes and proteins, leading to the inhibition of cell migration and apoptotic cell death. PMEO treatment induced a rapid drop in glutathione (GSH) levels and an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration, resulting in mild oxidative stress. Pretreatment of cells with N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a cell-permeable ROS scavenger, reverted the inhibitory action of PMEO on STAT3 phosphorylation. Moreover, combination therapy revealed that PMEO treatment displayed synergism with cisplatin in inducing the cytotoxic effect. Overall, our data highlight the importance of STAT3 signaling in PMEO cytotoxic activity, as well as the possibility of developing adjuvant therapy or sensitizing cancer cells to conventional chemotherapy

Alfa-Bisabolol (figure 1), a sesquiterpene alcohol present in essential oils derived from a variety of plants, presents pro-apoptotic activity against several human cancer cell lines. Its poor aqueous solubility limits in vitro and in vivo tests. Herein we report a study of the formulation and characterization of alfa-Bisabolol using poly lactide-co-glycolid acid copolymer nanoparticles (PLGA/B).
The human therapeutic treatment of PLGA is approved by US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) thanks to its biocompatibility. This copolymer is one of the most successfully used in nanomedicine applications since it is hydrolyzed in the body to produce the biodegradable lactic and glycolic acid monomer
Stable Aqueous Solutions of Naked Titanate Nanotubes
Aqueous solutions of naked nanotubes with Ti concentration
up to 10 mm are obtained by hydrothermal synthesis followed
by extensive ultrasound treatment. The morphology, surface
characteristics, and solution behavior of the solubilized nanotubes are investigated. The time course of the solubilization
process driven by ultrasound follows a first-order kinetic law
and is mediated by the competition between Na+ and H+ for
surface sites. The dynamics of interaction with small cations
(i.e. the sodium ion) is studied by nuclear magnetic resonance
spectroscopy and is demonstrated to be a multifaced process,
since Na+ is in part free to exchange between the binding
sites on nanotubes and the bulk and in part is confined to
slowly exchanging nanotube sites. The aqueous titanate nanotube solutions are stable for months, thus opening new perspectives for the use of this material in drug delivery and in
homogeneous photocatalysis
