Design and energy between art and artisan work: thus was born the process that generated a research and innovation pathway, conducted in Campania, between research centres and local know-how, within a tradition of relationships between art and knowledge, between craft and experimentation and more recently, between design and technological innovation. These relationships, which have roots within the local culture and the artisan tradition of the industry in Campania, were the synthesis of the pathway and of the process that led to the creation of the highly innovative outcomes of the Fotofun programme for integrating photovoltaics into buildings. In this sense, creativity and knowledge led to a shared phase of experimentation, and to an example of technological innovation, constituting a clear design process: one that delineated the scenario of reference for developing the Fotofun project which, via collaboration between universities, research institutes, and firms, returns a highly customisable product that is flexible, and can penetrate into new industrial sectors, defining guidelines for identifying future energy landscapes. In terms of tactics, the industrial design assumes the role of actor and director, guiding the processes of technological innovation, working within them, acknowledging their dynamics and the factors that can influence their strategies, making modifications where necessary, and using projects and products to construct the path towards innovation.Key words: design, energy, artisan work, innovation. Soft-switching modular multilevel converters for efficient grid integration of renewable sources

    Get PDF
The Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) concept is a modern energy conversion structure that stands out for a number of interesting features that opens wide application chances in Power Systems, for example for efficient grid integration of renewable sources. In these high-voltage, high-power application fields, a high efficiency is mandatory. In this regard, an interesting and promising development opportunity could be to make soft-switching the elementary converters of the submodules (cells), half H-bridges or full H-bridges, obtaining at the same time the advantage of increasing the switching frequency. The ARCP or the AQRDCL soft-switching topologies appear adequate for this purpose. This paper is dedicated to examining these development possibilities

Sintering process of amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles investigated by AFM, IR and Raman techniques

We report an experimental investigation on the effects of thermal treatments at different temperatures (room— 1270 K) and for different duration (0–75 h) on amorphous silica nanoparticles (fumed silica) in powder tablet form. Three types of fumed silica are considered, comprising nearly spherical particles of 40 nm, 14 nmand 7 nm mean diameter. The experimental techniques used here are Raman and infrared absorption (IR) spectroscopy together with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman and IR spectra indicate that the structure of nanometer silica particles is significantly differentwith respect to that of a bulk silica glass. In particular, themain differences regard the positions of the IR band peaked at about 2260 cm−1, the Raman R-band peaked at about 440 cm−1 and the intensity of the D1 and the D2 Raman lines, related to the populations of 4- and 3-membered rings, respectively. Our data also indicate that, under thermal treatments, the structure of fumed silica samples is significantly changed, gradually relaxing towards that pertaining to ordinary bulk silica. These changes are interpreted here on the basis of the morphological information provided by the AFM measurements and assuming a two-shell structure for the fumed silica primary particles

Robust optimization of energy hubs operation based on extended Affine Arithmetic

    Get PDF
Traditional energy systems were planned and operated independently, but the diffusion of distributed and renewable energy systems led to the development of new modeling concepts, such as the energy hub. The energy hub is an integrated paradigm, based on the challenging idea of multi-carrier energy systems, in which multiple inputs are conditioned, converted and stored in order to satisfy different types of energy demand. To solve the energy hub optimal scheduling problem, uncertainty sources, such as renewable energy production, price volatility and load demand, must be properly considered. This paper proposes a novel methodology, based on extended Affine Arithmetic, which enables the solving of the optimal scheduling problem in the presence of multiple and heterogeneous uncertainty sources. Realistic case studies are presented and discussed in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology

Airborne contact dermatitis and asthma in a nail art operator

AbstractNail art (creation and decoration of artificial nails) is a growing fashion trend. Proportionally to its popularity, the number of allergic reactions to the materials used has recently increased. We report the case of a nail art operator who developed occupational allergy to acrylates, manifested with the unusual simultaneous presence of asthma and dermatitis. Cutaneous lesions only affected areas not covered by individual protection devices or clothes, even if such areas were not in direct contact with acrylates, suggesting airborne allergic contact dermatitis. While respiratory problems were solved with the correct use of a mask at the workplace, facial dermatitis proved impossible to avoid or control and, for this reason, the patient had to change her work

Sensorless Control with Switching Frequency Square Wave Voltage Injection for SPMSM with Low Rotor Magnetic Anisotropy

    Get PDF
High-frequency signal injection sensorless algorithms are widely studied and used for rotor angle estimation in PMSM at low speed or standstill. One of the main drawbacks of such methods is the acoustic noise connected to the voltage injection. In order to minimize this problem, it is advisable to increase the frequency of the injected signal. Thus, many studies focus on square-wave injection at the switching frequency, which is the maximum theoretical frequency. Since these methods exploit the rotor magnetic anisotropy, it is relatively easy to use them in interior PMSMs, where the rotor anisotropy is high. On the contrary, it is hard to exploit them in surface PMSMs, which have an almost symmetric rotor, although a low rotor magnetic anisotropy is still present. In this paper, a sensorless algorithm with switching frequency squarewave injection is developed for surface PMSMs. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio, current oversampling is exploited. The benefits of such a technique are demonstrated with experimental results on a 2 Nm SPMSM

The hidden value of non-timber forest products: income contribution of the Basilicata wild truffle

    Get PDF
The Basilicata region (South of Italy) is land of truffles where the gastronomic, economic and cultural awareness has developed for this non-timber forest product only in the past decade. Little is known about truffle production and its social, economic and environmental implications. In this article we investigate the Basilicata truffle sector by devoting particular attention to the truffle hunters who gather the truffles from the forests. The data for the analysis were collected through a survey with the aim of describing the gathering activity (people involved, specie and quantities collected, etc.) and assessing its significance as a source of income. Results show that truffles can provide local communities with earning opportunities. However, the truffle sector needs to be protected and enhanced

videodermatoscopic approach to porokeratosis of mibelli a useful tool for the diagnosis

Sir, Dermatoscopy was introduced in dermatology to support the clinical diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions, and after a long period of development it is now commonly used in dermatological practice (1± 5). Porokeratosis of Mibelli (PM), a dermatosis characterized by an alteration of epidermal keratinisation, has a wide variety of morphological clinical presentations: classic PM, linear PM and punctate PM (6). It is characterized by single or by a few papules and plaques, varying in size, with elevated borders and a slightly evident longitudinal furrow, usually located in the extremities; their central portion is generally hypopigmented, hairless and atrophic. The histopathological hallmark is the presence at the borders of the lesions of the cornoid lamella, formed by parakeratotic cells ® lled in invaginations of epidermis through the orthokeratotic stratum corneum (6, 7). We performed a dermatoscopic examination in 10 patients with classic PM in order to point out dermatoscopic features enabling a nonFig. 1.
