Multiwavelength Light Curve Parameters of Cepheid Variables
We present a comparative analysis of theoretical and observed light curves of
Cepheid variables using Fourier decomposition. The theoretical light curves at
multiple wavelengths are generated using stellar pulsation models for chemical
compositions representative of Cepheids in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds.
The observed light curves at optical ({\it VI}), near-infrared ({\it JHK})
and mid-infrared (3.6 4.5-m) bands are compiled from the literature.
We discuss the variation of light curve parameters as a function of period,
wavelength and metallicity. Theoretical and observed Fourier amplitude
parameters decrease with increase in wavelength while the phase parameters
increase with wavelength. We find that theoretical amplitude parameters
obtained using canonical mass-luminosity levels exhibit a greater offset with
respect to observations when compared to non-canonical relations. We also
discuss the impact of variation in convective efficiency on the light curve
structure of Cepheid variables. The increase in mixing length parameter results
in a zero-point offset in bolometric mean magnitudes and reduces the systematic
large difference in theoretical amplitudes with respect to observations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, proceedings for the 22nd Los Alamos Stellar

The supermassive black hole mass - S\'ersic index relations for bulges and elliptical galaxies
Scaling relations between supermassive black hole mass, M_BH, and host galaxy
properties are a powerful instrument for studying their coevolution. A complete
picture involving all of the black hole scaling relations, in which each
relation is consistent with the others, is necessary to fully understand the
black hole-galaxy connection. The relation between M_BH and the central light
concentration of the surrounding bulge, quantified by the S\'ersic index n, may
be one of the simplest and strongest such relations, requiring only
uncalibrated galaxy images. We have conducted a census of literature S\'ersic
index measurements for a sample of 54 local galaxies with directly measured
M_BH values. We find a clear M_BH - n relation, despite an appreciable level of
scatter due to the heterogeneity of the data. Given the current M_BH - L_sph
and the L_sph - n relations, we have additionally derived the expected M_BH - n
relations, which are marginally consistent at the 2 sigma level with the
observed relations. Elliptical galaxies and the bulges of disc galaxies are
each expected to follow two distinct bent M_BH - n relations due to the
S\'ersic/core-S\'ersic divide. For the same central light concentration, we
predict that M_BH in the S\'ersic bulges of disc galaxies are an order
magnitude higher than in S\'ersic elliptical galaxies if they follow the same
M_BH - L_sph relation.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
Optical and Near-infrared Pulsation Properties of RR Lyrae and Population II Cepheid Variables in the Messier 15 Globular Cluster
Messier 15 (NGC 7078) is an old and metal-poor post core-collapse globular cluster that hosts a rich population of variable stars. We report new optical (gi) and near-infrared (NIR, JKs) multi-epoch observations for 129 RR Lyrae, 4 Population II Cepheids (3 BL Herculis, 1 W Virginis), and 1 anomalous Cepheid variable candidate in M15 obtained using the MegaCam and the WIRCam instruments on the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Multi-band data are used to improve the periods and classification of variable stars, and determine accurate mean magnitudes and pulsational amplitudes from the light curves fitted with optical and NIR templates. We derive optical and NIR period-luminosity relations for RR Lyrae stars which are best constrained in the Ks band, mKs=-2.333,(0.054) log P + 13.948,(0.015) with a scatter of only 0.037 mag. Theoretical and empirical calibrations of RR Lyrae period-luminosity-metallicity relations are used to derive a true distance modulus to M15: 15.196 ± 0.026 (statistical) ± 0.039 (systematic) mag. Our precise distance moduli based on RR Lyrae stars and Population II Cepheid variables are mutually consistent and agree with recent distance measurements in the literature based on Gaia parallaxes and other independent methods
RR Lyrae variables in Messier 53: Near-infrared Period--Luminosity relations and the calibration using Gaia Early Data Release 3
We present new near-infrared, , Period--Luminosity relations (PLRs)
for RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 53 (M53 or NGC 5024) globular cluster.
Multi-epoch observations, obtained with the WIRCam instrument on the
3.6-m Canada France Hawaii Telescope, are used for the first time to estimate
precise mean-magnitudes for 63 RR Lyrae stars in M53 including 29
fundamental-mode (RRab) and 34 first-overtone modes (RRc) variables. The
-band PLRs for RR Lyrae stars are best constrained for RRab types with a
minimal scatter of 22, 23, and 19 mmag, respectively. The combined sample of RR
Lyrae is used to derive the -band PLR, exhibiting a dispersion of only mag.
Theoretical Period--Luminosity--Metallicity (PLZ) relations are used to predict
parallaxes for 400 Galactic RR Lyrae resulting in a median parallax zero-point
offset of as in {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), which
increases to as if the parallax corrections are applied. We also
estimate a robust distance modulus,
(statistical) (systematic) mag, to M53 based on theoretical
calibrations. Homogeneous and precise mean-magnitudes for RR Lyrae in M53
together with similar literature data for M3, M4, M5, and Cen are used
to empirically calibrate a new RR Lyrae PLZ relation, , anchored with {\it
Gaia} EDR3 distances and theoretically predicted relations, and simultaneously
estimate precise RR Lyrae based distances to these globular clusters.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 4 Tables, Final Version, Accepted in The

Analysis of the conditions for the development of artistic gymnastics in the State of São Paulo
This descriptive quantitative paper presents a diagnosis of Artistic Gymnastics (AG) in the state of São Paulo from development conditions of the institutions that promote this sport (existent time of the sport in the institution, equipment’s infrastructure, number of professionals, quantity and level of the gymnasts in male and female). For data collection was used a structured questionnaire with closed questions and the data analysis was made from descriptive statistics. Participated in this study 56 AG coaches responsible for 28 institutions from 18 cities of the State of São Paulo. The collected data show that conditions designed for practice are not satisfactory regarding to the development conditions for AG in competitive level, with few professionals related to the number of practitioners, few practitioners in sport initiation, which directly influences the low amount of gymnasts in competitive level and many institutions do not have at least the official equipment of the sport. The non-appropriated conditions of AG development in the state of São Paulo complicate and directly influence the potential to revelation and development of gymnasts to high performance sport in the state. These results may directly reflect on Brazilian AG since São Paulo is a representative State in Brazilian championships and the São Paulo Gymnastics Federation has the largest number of affiliated entities in the country

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: The -- derived supermassive black hole mass function
Supermassive black hole mass estimates are derived for 1743 galaxies from the
Millennium Galaxy Catalogue using the recently revised empirical relation
between supermassive black hole mass and the luminosity of the host spheroid.
The MGC spheroid luminosities are based on -bulge plus
exponential-disc decompositions. The majority of black hole masses reside
between and an upper limit of . Using
previously determined space density weights, we derive the SMBH mass function
which we fit with a Schechter-like function. Integrating the black hole mass
function over gives a supermassive black
hole mass density of (
Mpc for early-type galaxies and ( Mpc for late-type galaxies. The errors are estimated from
Monte Carlo simulations which include the uncertainties in the --
relation, the luminosity of the host spheroid and the intrinsic scatter of the
-- relation. Assuming supermassive black holes form via baryonic
accretion we find that ( per cent of the Universe's
baryons are currently locked up in supermassive black holes. This result is
consistent with our previous estimate based on the -- (S{\'e}rsic
index) relation.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted to MNRA
