2020 CARES Act – Financial Supports for Small Business

Whether a business is impacted by weather-related disasters, road construction or sudden economic downturns, having a plan to mitigate the impacts can be crucial to the immediate and long-term survival of the business. Unforeseen circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, may require owners to re-evaluate their business models, cut operating costs and seek outside financial supports – all to keep cash flowing and the business open. To help small businesses during the pandemic, the Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law on March 27. It contains 349 billion in relief for American small businesses and workers. Purpose and eligibility vary with each program so contact your local funder, Nebraska Business Development Center or the Small Business Administration (SBA) for the latest information on the CARES Act and application assistance. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) provides loan forgiveness for retaining employees or independent contractors during the COVID-19 crisis. Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) & Emergency Economic Injury Grant provides an emergency advance up to 10,000 to small businesses and non-profits harmed by COVID-19. SBA Express Bridge Loan allows a business owner who has a current relationship with an SBA lender to secure a quick turnaround loan of up to $25,000. Small Business Debt Relief provides a financial reprieve to small businesses with non-disaster SBA loans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Small Business Tax Provision provides tax relief for employers subject to closure or economic hardship due to government order limiting commerce, travel or group meetings or experiencing a greater than 50 percent reduction in quarterly receipts, measured on a year-over- year basis

Measuring the Circle: Emerging Trends in Philanthropy for First Nations

The Circle had the opportunity to undertake a multi-part research project to gain a more robust understanding of non-governmental funding to Aboriginal beneficiaries and causes in Canada over the past few years. The year-long knowledge gathering process included three inter-related activities: (a) mining Canada Revenue Agency data to map the Aboriginal funding economy in Canada from 2005 to 2011; (b) a set of Key Informant interviews with representatives from a sample of grantmakers surfaced through the mapping activity; and (c) a series of case studies to showcase some leading funders in the Aboriginal funding sphere or initiatives dedicated to building community capacity as well as supporting Aboriginal beneficiaries and causes. This report contains the key findings from the three-part research initiative

Losing by Degrees: Rising Costs and Public Disinvestment in Higher Education

Washington's public colleges and universities are a critical resource for building a prosperous future for our state and fulfilling the promise of opportunity for all. Without strong public institutions of higher education, our youth will be stymied in striving to reach their full potential, and our state will not remain competitive in the global economy. Yet over the past two decades, the state's financial support for higher education has not kept pace with population growth and rising costs. Public institutions differ from private colleges and universities in their commitment to providing access to higher education and improving the well-being of all state residents. The University of Washington, in its statement of values, describes "Being Public" as follows: "As a public university we are deeply committed to serving all our citizens. We collaborate with partners from around the world to bring knowledge and discovery home to elevate the quality of lives of Washingtonians." As centers of education, research, and innovation, public colleges and universities spur economic development throughout the state. Washington's business leaders have long expressed the need for a more highly trained workforce, with more public investment in every level of education, from preschool through graduate study. Governor Christine Gregoire said in her 2009-11 Budget Proposal, "Washington's public colleges and universities are the economic engine that drives the state's economy and will drive our recovery." To build a strong foundation for Washington's future, we must increase public investment in higher education as a part of upgrading our whole public education system. Doing so will require identifying new sources of public revenue

Advancing Nursing Education Science: An Analysis of NLN\u27s Grant Program 2008-2010

The National League for Nursing has responded to the increasing need for nursing education research through its grant program. Significant growth in proposals has intensified competition for funds and challenged the Nursing Education Research Advisory Council’s review process. The purpose of this article is to explore the NLN’s nursing education research proposals from 2008 to 2010 in order to improve performance and provide guidance to future nursing education researchers. Beginning with the 2008 grant cycle, a database was developed to assist in performance improvement. A total of 113 proposals were submitted; of those, 24 were funded for a success rate of greater than 21 percent. Various designs and samples were employed and all geographic regions of the United States were represented. Inter-rater reliability among reviewers remained high and the scientific rigor of proposals steadily increased. Increased funding from other sources is urgently needed to build the science of nursing education

Vorticity-transport and unstructured RANS investigation of rotor-fuselage interactions

The prediction capabilities of unstructured primitive-variable and vorticity-transport-based Navier-Stokes solvers have been compared for rotorcraft-fuselage interaction. Their accuracies have been assessed using the NASA Langley ROBIN series of experiments. Correlation of steady pressure on the isolated fuselage delineates the differences between the viscous and inviscid solvers. The influence of the individual blade passage, model supports, and viscous effects on the unsteady pressure loading has been studied. Smoke visualization from the ROBIN experiment has been used to determine the ability of the codes to predict the wake geometry. The two computational methods are observed to provide similar results within the context of their physical assumptions and simplifications in the test configuration

A review of certain recent advances in primary health care

A strong primary health care system is the keystone of health care and helps patients manage their health conditions in the community, whilst also providing disease prevention services. Primary care is a continuously evolving specialty, with recent exciting innovations, aiming to improve all aspects of care and to meet people’s needs and expectations. A search for articles focusing on the specific aspects of recent advances in primary health care was done using internet search engines. Articles were selected from primary and secondary literature sources, which included original research articles, review articles and other epidemiological studies. Recent advances in information technology, services and access, dealing with multimorbidity, academic family medicine, equity and outcome measures have all made an impact on the primary health care system and on meeting the ever-increasing challenges of modern society. Primary health care is of extreme importance in having an efficient and effective health care system. As primary health care improves with recent advances, a positive effect is seen on the population’s health, cost savings and health care disparities.peer-reviewe
