THE LIVES OF OTHERS: DESCRIBING AND PREDICTING JOB SATISFACTION AMONG FACULTY WORKING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SARAJEVO

This study examined the topic of faculty satisfaction among faculty employed at the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) in Bosnia and Hercegovina (BiH). BiH has endured a difficult transition from a socialist regime to a market economy following the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the early 1990ā€™s and its higher education sector has been particularly affected by this transition. Scholarly research has focused mostly on the impact of discrimination of certain groups at the primary and secondary levels (PaÅ”alic-KreÅ”o, 2008). Research into issues affecting tertiary education is still an emerging field, and research on faculty is especially sparse. Utilizing survey methodology, this study described the demographic and professional profile of the average faculty member, their satisfaction and/or agreement with various aspects of their work and working conditions and tested which variables within Hagedornā€™s (2000) conceptual framework of faculty satisfaction significantly predicted their job satisfaction. The results revealed that faculty were not involved in major decision-making and that external politics heavily influenced university operations. They were dissatisfied with their overall working conditions, but especially with library offerings and administrative support. The work itself, recognition, and being single were the only variables from Hagedornā€™s model that significantly predicted their overall satisfaction

Advising Experiences among First-Year International Doctoral Students

    Get PDF
The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how international graduate students in their first-year of doctoral study selected their faculty advisor and how this selection process influenced their advising relationship. Our results found that a majority of students in our sample were assigned to an interim advisor and most reported a positive advising experience. However, disquieting patterns emerged from the data: low frequency of advisor-advisee interaction, occurrences of mismatching between advisor-advisee, and an unknowingness of how to engage with oneā€™s faculty advisor. Our study adds to the literature focusing on international students by shedding a light on nuanced advising experiences of first-year international doctoral students and by providing recommendations for faculty advisors and directors of graduate studies on ways to improve and systematize their advising practices so as to encourage retention and success among international doctoral students

A short review of headspace extraction and ultrasonic solvent extraction for honey volatiles fingerprinting

    Get PDF
Honey volatiles exhibit a potential role in distinguishing honeys as a function of botanical origin, but heating of honey generates artefacts such as compounds of Strecker degradation and Maillard reaction products. This short review is focused on the most recently applied methods for honey volatiles fingerprinting (without generation of thermal artefacts): headspace extraction (dynamic headspace extraction (DHE), headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME)) and ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE). These methods display a varying degree of selectivity and effectiveness depending upon the compounds involved and the extraction conditions. Recent developments of these methods are discussed, with application examples drawn from the literature as well from our own research. Flavour qualities of the honey are very much dependent on the volatile and semivolatile organic compounds present in both the sample matrix and the headspace aroma. Therefore the use of one single technique is not adequate for reliable honey volatiles profiling, but combined use of headspace extraction and ultrasonic solvent extraction could be a useful tool for the characterization of the honey and identification of its botanical source through typical volatile marker compounds

Lastvine - eneolitičko nalaziŔte u Benkovcu

The papers deals with the results of the excavations conducted in 2009/2010 at the Eneolithic site of Lastvine in Benkovac near Zadar. On the basis of typological and stylistic characteristics of pottery that makes the most abundant group of archaeological finds, the site can be ascribed to the Early Eneolithic period with certainty and associated with a number of synchronous cave sites in the wider region of the eastern Adriatic and its hinterland whose main characteristic is channelled pottery. However as opposed to these sites, Lastvine is the first open-air site, and the same time the first single-layered settlement with this type of pottery. Furthermore there are certain differences in the technique of this ornament execution.U članku se obrađuju rezultati iskopavanja koja su 2009. Osim toga, stanovite razlike postoje i u tehnici izvođenja toga ukrasa

Chemical profile of the organic residue from ancient amphora found in the Adriatic Sea determined by direct GC and GC-MS analysis

An ancient organic residue was collected from the bottom of a Greco-Italian amphora found in the Adriatic Sea and investigated by direct GC and GC- MS analysis. The headspace composition was determined by HS-SPME using: (1) DVB/CAR/PDMS and (2) PDMS/DVB fibres. Higher percentages of benzene derivatives, monoterpenes and other low- molecular aliphatic compounds were obtained by method (1) in contrast to higher percentage of naphthalene and phenanthrene derivatives found by method (2). In comparison with the composition of pine resin, it is more likely that the found low- molecular aliphatic alcohols, acids, esters and carbonyls with 2-phenylethanol were trapped and preserved within the organic residue from stored wine ā€“ the amphoraā€™s originally content. Semi- volatile diterpenes methyl dehydroabietate (33.6%) and retene (24.1%) were dominant in the residue CH2Cl2 solution. Other abundant compounds were 1, 4-dimethoxyphenanthrene (6.8%) as well as other naphthalene and/or phenanthrene derivatives [7-(1- methylethyl)-1, 4a-dimethyl-1, 2, 3, 4, 4a, 9, 10, 10a- octahydronaphthalene, 7-(1-methylethyl)-1, 4a- dimethyl-2, 3, 4, 4a, 9, 10-hexahydrophenanthrene, 7- (1-methylethyl)-1, 4a-dimethyl-1, 2, 3, 4, 4a, 9, 10, 10a- octahydro-phenanthrene, 3, 6-dimethylphenanthrene and 2, 3, 5-trimethylphenanthrene]. Possible sources and formation pathways of the major compounds in the residue were discussed
