El Teeteto como diálogo controversial ficticio

This article is motivated by the debate about the presence of the ideas of Aristipo and the early Cyrenaics in Plato’s work. The following question guides this article: is it possible to identify the epistemological idea presented in the first part of the Theaetetus, which is attributed to refined and famous men, as part of the Cyrenaic philosophy? In order to answer this question, I will use the concept of an imaginary or fictitious controversial dialogue proposed by the Controversial Spaces model of Oscar Nudler. I Will be working with the following exegetical hypothesis: notwithstanding the differences between the doctrine exposed in the Platonic dialogue and the doctrine present in the Cyrenaic philosophy, it can be maintained that this group of philosophers was the one most likely to have been on Plato’s mind when he outlined the doctrine of the refined philosophers in the Theaetetus. In this regard, the presence of Cyrenaic philosophy in Plato’s work could be thought of as a kind of vestige.

Survey of Cubic Fibonacci Identities When Cuboids Carry Weight

The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey of cubic Fibonacci identities, trying to uncover as many as possible. From the outset, our rationale for a very careful search on an apparently obscure problem was not only a matter of mathematical curiosity, but also motivated by a quest for 3D Fibonacci spirals. As we were not able to find any survey on the particular topic of cubic Fibonacci identities we decided to try to fill this void. We started by surveying many Fibonacci identities and recording cubic ones. Obviously, tracing all Fibonacci identities (for identifying a handful) is a daunting task. Checking several hundred we have realized that it is not always clear who the author is. The reason is that in many cases an identity was stated in one article (sometimes without a proof, e.g., as an open problem, or a conjecture) while later being proven in another article, or effectively rediscovered independently by other authors. However, we have done our best to present the identities chronologically. We have supplied our own proof for one identity, having tried, but failed, to find a published proof. For all the other identities, we either proved them on a computer, or else verified by hand their original published proofs. Somehow unexpectedly, our investigations have revealed only a rather small number of cubic Fibonacci identities, representing a tiny fraction of all published Fibonacci identities (most of which are linear or quadratic). Finally, out of these, only a handful of cubic Fibonacci identities are homogeneous

Review paper abstract: Today’s foodscape is characterized by an abundance of unhealthy food and food practices, and evidence suggests that this has negatively impacted on people’s health and wellbeing, leading to the modern malnutrition of obesity and chronic diseases. Food literacy concept has emerged as a promising tool to help people navigate the food system in a health-enhancing manner and so, take control over their dietary practices and behaviours. Food literacy has built momentum by being employed either implicitly or explicitly in dietary interventions, and this led to an increased interest of researchers to establish a shared meaning of the term. This study aimed to explore the current understanding of the food literacy concept and, possibly identify any gaps in the existing literature that may help reach a consensus on its definition and conceptual framework. For this purpose, it provided an overview of the food literacy definitions, components and competencies as well as its association with other health-related concepts, such as nutrition and health literacy. It followed a systematic review approach and discussed 19 paper articles which were selected based on their contribution to the conceptual framework of the term and the understanding of its relationship with other health-related concepts. Although a relatively novel concept, many variations of the definitions, components and competencies of food literacy could be identified in the current literature. This suggests that food literacy concept is subject to the environmental dynamics and, therefore, it calls for understanding and conceptualization in the light of one’s personal and environmental experiences. A gap in the existing literature concerned with food literacy education has been identified through the absence of any research on this topic conducted in the UK context. Research paper abstract: Globally, food systems continue to grow in complexity and, consequently, it becomes more difficult for people to engage in healthy food practices. This ‘food confusion’ may lead to unhealthy eating patterns and, consequently to diet-related diseases. This concern urged health practitioners and public health policy-makers to find optimal solutions to re-connect people with their food in a health-enhancing manner. The ‘food literacy’ concept emerged as a promising tool to foster positive food relationships and so, help people maintain and improve their health. It has been argued that the components and competencies of food literacy are not static but influenced by one’s personal and environmental experiences. There are many variations of the food literacy definition and competencies, however, this concept has not been explored and defined in the UK context. This study aimed to explore the food literacy concept, its defining components and key determinants in the UK context. The objectives were to capture the views of UK health and nutrition professionals on this emerging concept and construct a conceptual framework of the term. The World Café research technique was employed to explore participants’ understanding of the concept of food literacy and the thematic analysis method was used to analyze their views on this topic. The findings revealed a wide range of competencies clustered into two main domains: Applied Food Education and Empowerment and Food Ethics. Key determinants impacting on food literacy were identified at two levels: Agency (personal capabilities) and Structure (System capabilities). The conceptual framework of food literacy as understood in the UK context as well as identifying the influencing factors may help UK health practitioners and public health policy-makers to use food literacy explicitly in health-promoting dietary interventions and food education programmes

The response of fish to immunostimulant diets

    Get PDF
In order to maintain fish health and to improve performance immunostimulants have been used as dietary additives to improve weight gain, feed efficiency, and/or disease resistance in cultured fish. In aquaculture, non-specific immunostimulants have been widely used probably due to the limited knowledge of the immune response in fish and the ease of their application. Many studies have been carried out to assess the effect of dietary immunostimulants in fish including algal derivatives, herb and plant extract containing diets using a wide range of downstream analytical techniques. Many immunostimulants are based upon tradition and folklore transferred through generations and specific to certain geographical regions rather than known biological properties. However, there are studies in which it is possible to observe a clear and direct dose-dependent stimulatory effect upon the immune system. Other dietary supplements used contain PAMPs (Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterns) as immunostimulants whose recognition depends upon PRR (pathogen recognition receptor) interactions including the TLRs (Toll-like receptor). Despite the growing interest in the use of immunostimulants across the aquaculture industry the underlying mechanisms of ligand recognition, extract composition and activation of the fish immune response remains fragmented. In this review we focus upon the last 15 years of studies addressing the assessment of: (1) plant, herb and algae extracts; and (2) PAMPs, upon non-specific immune parameters of activation and immunostimulant diet efficacy

In this context, the use of chemotherapy as part of the treatment increases the patients' chances of survival. On the other hand, there is a need to combat health problems related to the disease and the toxicity of treatments in the neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory systems, which result in damage to the quality of life and mental health of women affected by the disease. Thus, the objective was to determine the effects of 12 weeks of a telehealth multicomponent physical training program associated with health education information (TM+ES), which was compared to an isolated health education program (HE), on psychological outcomes of women undergoing primary treatment for BC. The criteria for participation in the study were as follows: women diagnosed with BC between stages I-III undergoing primary treatment, residents of Porto Alegre or Pelotas-RS and who had not exercised regularly in the last three months. The study was carried out with 16 women aged between 33 and 62 years. Depressive symptoms were measured pre- and post-intervention in both groups with the CES-D instrument. Thus, the results showed that only the HE group statistically decreased its CES-D score from pre to post-intervention (24.44 ± 7.62 to 16.21 ± 5.94 points, p<0.001). For the TM+ES group there was no change in this score after the intervention (17.86 ± 4.63 to 16.18 ± 2.83 points, p=0.308). However, it is important to highlight that the ES group presented higher pre-intervention values in the CES-D than the TM+ES group (p=0.033), possibly indicating a larger window of adaptation for this outcome. It is suggested that isolated behavioral interventions can be effective to improve depressive symptoms in patients during BC treatment
