The Practice of Physical Activity After Breast Cancer Treatments: A Qualitative Study Among Portuguese Women
This work received national funding from FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P, through the Research Center for Psychological Science of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Lisbon (UIDB/04527/2020 and UIDP/04527/2020).Background: Women survivors of breast cancer treatments face significant challenges
around initiation or maintenance of physical activity (PA) as they transit to recovery.
Embracing their needs and preferences is important to increase adherence. This study
aimed to explore the perspectives of Portuguese women survivors of breast cancer
regarding regular performance of PA and individual choices and strategies that should
be considered in designing effective interventions.
Methods: The individual semi-structured interviews (N = 20) were analyzed through
thematic analysis, following an inductive process, seeking to identify the barriers,
facilitators, and particular influencing circumstances associated with regular PA.
Results: Four themes and several contextual, emotional, physical, and social factors
were identified as determinants of regular PA. Guilt, women’s duties, and altruism to
help close relatives were identified as emotional and cultural factors that are less-found
in the existing literature. PA showed influence both from health professionals’ counseling
and from knowledge and beliefs held by these women.
Conclusion: While confirming the already-known impact of breast cancer diagnosis
and treatments on PA, which redefine participants’ availability to be active, the findings
highlight beliefs and specific emotional factors that should be considered when planning
culturally sensitive interventions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The purpose of this study was
to clarify, using questionnaires, the behaviour associated with having sex, sexual
partners and infidelity. It was also the aim to explore the predicting factors of the
definitions found, comparing the results of a sample of 152 Portuguese university
students with the results of samples from other countries. Our findings suggested
that having sex meant penis-vagina relations (> 95%) or anal sex (91-92%).
Contrary to the results found in other samples, the oral-genital contacts were considered
an instance of having sex (78-84%). The range of definitions differed
since it is possible to have infidelity behaviour without a sexual partner and to be a
sexual partner without the existence of sex between two people. Few gender
differences were found and the presence of an orgasm affected the definitions of having sex and sexual partner. The study concludes that a clarification for sexual
words used in research is essential and discusses the implications for the prevention
of high risk sexual behaviour
This dissertation intends to explore infrequently studied variables conceming
preventive sexual behavior in the transmission of HIV/AIDS. These variables
emphasize automatic and less deliberated processes in the understanding of preventive
behavior and devalue rational processes in decision making. These selected variables
are relative to the contribution of knowledge structure, in particular the scripts (Schank
and Abelson, 1977) and the implicit personality theories (Bruner e Tagiuri, 1954;
Schneider, 1973) of individual preventive sexual behavior, more specifically, the use of
condoms in sexual interactions. The dissertation is an example of applied social
psychology in which the operationalization of the variables, the development of
assessment instruments, and the elaboration of the hypothesis were theoretically
oriented by concepts from social cognition applied to the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
The script perspective emphasizes the representation of sexual encounters for sexual
protection. The research conceming implicit personality theories highlights the
influence of beliefs and cognitions regarding a healthy partner in evaluating the
necessity for sexual protection. The research of these variables takes into account
contextual and cognitive variables related to the status of the relationship, the nature and
form of strategies used in sexual protective behavior, and the gender of the condom
proposer.
The first phase of research was a pre-study of 168 university students in order to
select the clearest sexual encounters that were used to identify sexual scripts (Rosch,
1978). In the second phase of research, studies were conducted on a total sample of
576 university students and the analysis of the results aimed at: (a) identifying the
scripts for the sexual encounters; (b) evaluating the status of protective behavior in
scripts; (c) understanding the inter-relations between cognitive representations and
sexual risk behavior and, (d) learning the impact of contextual and cognitive variables in
interpersonal perception and expectations about the characteristics and future of the
relationship between sexual partners.
The dissertation proceeds by discussing the results of the studies using the
initially presented theoretical assertions, and emphasizing the most relevant results.
The dissertation ends by stressing the principal implications, and discussing the
limitations of the studies. Implications for future research are also drawn for planning
social and educational interventions in the prevention of HIV/AIDS
& Jones, 1989; Pintrich, Cross, Kozma & McKeachie, 1986;
pensam acerca desta actividade (Raphael, Englert & Kirschner,
1989) .
predições baseadas no desempenho.
Neste sentido, o desenvolvimento do conhecimento do aprendiz,
The role of behaviour‐change theory in sleep interventions with emerging adults (aged 18–29 years): a systematic review and meta‐analysis
CICPSI Investigation and Development Unit of Faculdade de Psicologia, Universidade de Lisboa, Grant/Award Number: FPUL/BI/2020/12Previous systematic reviews and meta-analysis of sleep interventions with young
adults have not reached consensus on what contributes to their efficacy. Behaviourchange theories may influence the efficacy of interventions; hence, the aim of this
research was to investigate the role of such theories in sleep interventions with this
population. Six electronic databases and reference lists were searched (April–May
2021) for published sleep behaviour-change interventions with emerging adults (aged
18–29 years) that used control groups. A selection of 20 studies fulfilled the inclusion
criteria, but only six were based on behaviour-change theories. Meta-analysis was
run with eight studies, as the others had a high risk of bias or did not present the necessary data to calculate Hedges’ g. The estimation of a random effects model for the
studies showed a small effect in the sleep quality of the participants in the experimental group (g = 0.26; 95% confidence interval 0.42 to 0.09), with low levels
of heterogeneity (I
2 = 21%), and a small 95% prediction interval ( 0.59 to 0.08).
Although we could not examine theory or any other moderators of the effect, a qualitative analysis of the behaviour-change techniques present in the interventions leads
us to hypothesise that there is not a direct link between behaviour-change techniques and the success of the intervention. Other characteristics of the interventions
may be linked to their variable levels of efficacy and should be investigated in the
future, as for now there are no answers as to what the key is for successful sleep

Introduction: the memory café is considered an innovative strategy in several European countries as well as in USA, being a
monthly meeting, held in an informal and community setting for persons with dementia or memory problems, their
family/caregivers, in which also participate all others interested in this issue.
Objective: The present study aims to gather evidence about this type of intervention.
Methods: characterization data about the participations 12 Memory Cafés of Portugal and, in one in one specific Café, about the
benefits of participating in these sessions was collected.
Results: During the last 3 years, 268 sessions were developed, with 322 volunteers, 566 invited persons, and 1500 participants, the
later ones evaluating the attended sessions very positively. The categories that emerged from the content analysis of the
information collected with participants and volunteers (n = 30) pointed to the valuation interpersonal relations (mentioned by
86.7% of the respondents), the benefits in well-being level (76.7%) and learning (56.7%).
Conclusions: the results point to the importance of relationships and social contacts, so often undervalued in non-pharmacological
interventions with these patients and caregiversinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Sexual gender roles and stereotypes and the sexual double standard in sexual satisfaction among Portuguese college students: an exploratory study
This work was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), under Grant number Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia PTDC/PSI-GER/28530/2017Research on sexual satisfaction in Portugal is still limited; what exists,
however, highlights barriers preventing optimal realisation of this dimension of sexuality and sexual health. Physical and relational barriers have
been consistently evidenced, whereas social and cultural barriers have
been less studied. Using focus groups, we aimed to explore perceptions of
Portuguese college students (N = 47) about sexual satisfaction – more
specifically, about gender differences and about how sexual gender roles
and stereotypes and the Sexual Double Standard may influence sexual
satisfaction. We found that sexual satisfaction is perceived to be suboptimal, especially for women in casual sexual relationships, and that
the differences are attributed by both male and female to the constraints
imposed by sexual gender roles, sexual gender stereotypes, and the
sexual double standard. Deconstructing these socio-sexual beliefs is
needed in order to achieve a higher, egalitarian level of sexual satisfaction
and to promote sexual health.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The effect of mobile text messages and a novel floss holder on gingival health: a randomized control trial
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of using mobile text messages and a novel floss holder as compared to finger flossing or the novel floss holder alone, on the psychological, behavioral, and clinical parameters of patients with gingivitis. Methods: A total 165 adults were assessed for eligibility and 144 met the criteria for randomization into three groups: Finger Floss (FF, n=43), Novel Floss Holder (NFH, n= 40), and Novel Floss Holder plus Text Messages (NFH+TM, n= 61) following a dental hygiene consultation appointment. Gingival bleeding points were measured on probing (BOMP) at baseline and four months later by a calibrated dental hygienist, blinded to the experimental groups. Participants also self-reported their oral hygiene behaviors, and indicated psychological determinants of behavior change prior to the dental hygiene consultation and at four months. Descriptive statistics and repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to compare groups over time. Results: Two subjects dropped out of the study making the total number of participants 142. At the four month follow-up, the NFH group and the NFH+TM groups demonstrated significantly higher levels of self-reported flossing, action self-efficacy, intention, action planning, and action control. The NFH+TM group showed lower levels of bleeding and higher levels of oral hygiene and recovery self-efficacy than the other groups, in addition to higher levels of maintenance self-efficacy as compared to the FF group. Conclusions: The use of a novel floss holder, NFH, was shown to improve the behavioral and psychological determinants of periodontal health four months after introduction of the device. However the clinical measures of BOMP only improved significantly when used in conjunction with text messages (NFH+TM). The use of a consciousness awareness technique,TMs, in combination with a novel device, may help patients to reach therapeutic objectives and contribute to the management of periodontal pathologies such as gingivitis.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Portuguese College Students’ Perceptions About the Social Sexual Double Standard: Developing a Comprehensive Model for the Social SDS
Research on the sexual double standard (SDS) indicates its maintenance among college students, despite some attenuation and the emergence of alternative standards.
Results show some inconsistencies, however, which highlight conceptual and methodological weaknesses that limit conclusions about the existence and expression of
the SDS. One response entails distinguishing personal acceptance of the SDS from
its social existence; maintenance of the SDS may reside in the latter, as there is
some evidence for a decline in personal but not in social SDS. We aimed to analyse Portuguese college students’ perceptions about the social SDS and to develop
a comprehensive model for it. Four male (n=30) and four female (n=17) focus
groups were conducted with data analysis framed by Grounded Theory. The social
SDS emerged especially with regard to casual sex and multiple partners, legitimized
by the accepted/recognized existence of sexual gender roles and stereotypes. It is
maintained through conformity with SDS and gender prescriptions in order to prove/
protect femininity, masculinity and sexual reputation. The process reduces sexual
autonomy and has drawbacks for sexual health and wellbeing. Our comprehensive
model can inform deconstructive strategies to promote egalitarian, liberal, and positive sexual experiences.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
