Basili Castle: the digital Atlas of Castles in Basilicata (Southern Italy)

    Get PDF
The Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage of the National Research Council, in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Castles - section of Basilicata, has designed and developed the digital Atlas of Castles of Basilicata. This Atlas, named BasiliCastle, aims at being a concrete contribution to the knowledge, fruition and promotion of the fortified architectural heritage of Basilicata. It includes a WebGIS and an App. The WebGIS is based on free geographical data and it is shared and supported by OpenStreetMap platform. The App provides users with a detailed geographical data, the historical and architectural description, pictures and 3D models of the castles. BasiliCastle has been developed using an Open Source environment and allows to share all the data which are fully available to users

RIGENERAZIONE DI CITTADINE RURALI MEDIANTE IL TURISMO SOSTENIBILE: UN MODELLO DI VALUTAZIONE

Rehabilitation of ancient towns poses special questions because of the existing complex physical and social ties that can be properly integrated in decisions on sustainable urban planning by multi-criteria evaluations. This work proposes a description model aiding actions and decisions for the rehabilitation of historic centres through tourism development in Sicilian hinterland areas. The decision problem concerns the town of Cianciana, which in recent years has been appreciated by strangers who stay on this town to live with the local inhabitants. Despite this international attention, at present, the town is undergoing local’s depopulation, gentrification and economic crisis. The proposed description model provides decision makers with a cognitive framework helpful in the identification of the best strategy of tourist accommodation involving unused historic real estate. The multi-criteria model is built by a methodology resulting from the integration of the constructive approach and the down-up approach. The evaluation model was inspired by the particular case of Cianciana, but it would be appropriate for decisions in analogous circumstances.DOI: http://dx.medra.org/10.19254/LaborEst.14.0

Evolution of congenital hypothyroidism in a cohort of preterm born children

Background: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is reported to be more common in preterm infants than in term infants, especially in sick preterm infants. Though a frequent possibility of transitory thyroidal alterations in this category of neonates, the evolution of CH to transient or permanent forms is unpredictable. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed medical records of 28 preterm infants (<37 weeks gestation) who had exhibited a positive screening for CH at birth during the period 2000–2015 followed in our Center. Children were divided into three groups: permanent CH (PCH) with thyroid dysgenesis, PCH with eutopic normal-sized thyroid gland, and transient CH (TCH) with eutopic normal-sized thyroid gland. In all groups we described clinical and biochemical characteristics. Secondly, we analyzed the differences between patients with thyroid dysgenesis and patients with eutopic normal-sized gland and we compared PCH and TCH groups with normal-sized thyroid gland in order to identify clinical or biochemical data for early detection of transient forms. Results: Of all patients, 21.4% showed thyroid dysgenesis while 78.6% presented eutopic normal-sized gland. Infants with thyroid dysgenesis had higher median (IQR) baseline s-TSH and levothyroxine (L-T4) dose per weight at 12 months (12 m-dose) than patients with eutopic normal-sized gland. At re-evaluation of the patients with eutopic normal-sized gland, 36% showed PCH and 64% had TCH. The age of the patients at the beginning of L-T4 treatment, gestational age (GA), birth weight, blood thyroid stimulating hormone levels (b-TSH) at first newborn screening (NBS), baseline serum thyroid stimulating hormone (s-TSH), and L-T4 12 m-dose were statistically different between the two groups. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that factors as GA, birth weight, b-TSH levels at first NBS, baseline s-TSH, L-T4 12 m-dose and age at the start of the treatment may be considered useful predictive elements for the evolution of CH

This paper analyzes the transposition of Arlindo Machado’s first book, Eisenstein: geometria do êxtase (1982) to CD-ROM media format, exploring the resources of digital media from the standpoint of aesthetic elements originated from Russian Constructivism and other features of Sergei Eisenstein’s film language. This collaborative research work led by Arlindo may unfold in the broadening of the paths in the search for new technologies

Neuroinflammation and Neurotransmission Mechanisms Involved in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

    Get PDF
Some classical psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, autism, major depression, bipolar and obsessive‐compulsive disorders, have been related to neuroinflammatory process, immunological abnormalities, and neurotransmission impairment beyond genetic mutations. Neuroinflammation is mostly regulated by glial cells, which respond to physiological and pathological stimuli by anti‐ and pro‐inflammatory cytokine and chemokine signaling; moreover, recent studies have indicated that glial cells also respond to the neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters regulate many biological processes, such as cell proliferation and synaptogenesis, which contribute to the formation of functional circuits. Alterations in the neurotransmission can lead to many pathological changes that occur in brain disorders. For example, studies have shown that neuroinflammation can alter the metabolism of glutamate as well as the function of its transporters, resulting in cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric impairments. Cytokines as IL‐1β and IL‐6 appear to have an important influence in the dopaminergic and serotoninergic neurons. These data together suggest that glial cells via cytokines and abnormal regulation of neurotransmitters can influence psychiatric disorders. The present knowledge about this issue does not allow answering whether neuroinflammation is the cause or the consequence of neurotransmission imbalance and emphasizes the importance to improve in vivo imaging methods and models to elucidate this enigma
