Environmental Hazards and Falls among Elderly with Low Back Pain

    Get PDF
This study aimed to identify the existing environmental hazards and their association with falls among the elderly with LBP. A cross-sectional study involving 284 participants was conducted using Fall Risk Assessment Tools (FRAT), and Home Falls and Accident Screening Tools (HOME FAST). There were 234 respondents included for analysis. Most hazards reported no slip-resistant mats in the bathroom (73.5%). There was no association between environmental hazards and falls among the elderly (p > 0.05). Environmental factors are the indecisive cause of most falls in the institutions, but their interaction with the physical abilities of the elderly could contribute to falls. Get PDF
The 11 Malaysia Plan exhibit the GDP increase in almost all main sector including construction that increased from 3.4% (2010) to 4.5% (2015). Robust activities in the infrastructure and residential subsectors are expected to spur a double-digit growth of 11.1% in the construction sector. Job created by construction sectors between 2011-1015 is 78,000 (4.3%) of other jobs creation by sectors. While the labour productivity for this sector is expected to maintain at estimated 9.6% (per anum) (2011-2015) to 9.6% (per anum) (2016-2020). Safety experts estimate that 80-90% of all industrial accidents are attributable to ‘human factors’ on that point, construction workers need to learn about safety to avoid any accidents that may occur while working. Training and provision of information on Safety culture, laws and leadership behaviour will help promote commitment to safety and encourage their subordinates to value safety as a fundamental goal. In Malaysia, issue of safety performance in construction industry are very frequent being raised up by government, civilians, and even employees and it is not uncommon for construction stakeholders, to concentrate exclusively on completing projects to the required quality standard with the minimum time and cost. Safety is more often seen as secondary concern. On that reason, it is the main purpose of this study is to identify main factors which contribute to safety performance and provides a continuous approach to reduce risk and potential hazard through workplace learning. It will also dwell on how learning safety at workplace can generate awareness and enhance their work performance. Employees should be given safety information and safety culture or climate of an organization, can be nurtured through good leadership and safety practice. Zero Incident Protocol (ZIP) is a workplace safety training program designed to achieve zero safety incidents. As a result, organization are able to avoid paying higher worker’s compensation costs for injuries sustained at work, and maintain a reputation of corporate responsibility, and trained productive workforce

Introduction: Since H. Pylori has been isolated in stomach and duodenum, there were individual methodologies to explain the grading according to colonization and density of microorganism. In 1990 Sydney system of classification was proposed at the 9th world congress of gastroenterology in Sydney Australia, based on topo-graphical, morphological and etiological findings. This classification revised in 1994 and updated by experts in Houston Texas. H. Pylori is major cause of chronic gastri-tis results in gastric and peptic ulcer. It also causes MALT lymphoma and malignan-cy. For histopathological examination four specimens, two from antrum and two from corpus are recommended. Objective: To evaluate the Sydney system of classification and grading for H. Pylori in local population.Methodology: 287 cases of biopsies received at the department of pathology Mu-hammad Medical College, Mirpurkhas Sindh Pakistan, during the period of January 2017 to December 2018 were revised. Sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin; Alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff to define H. Pylori and associated pathological changes. The microscopical findings classified according to upgraded Sydney pattern. Results: Out of 287 cases of gastric biopsies 23 (8.0%) were positive for H. Pylori. chronic inflammation present in 168 (58.5%). Neutrophilic activity found in 58 (18.1%). Atrophy without metaplasia observed in 31 (10.8%). Intestinal metaplasia present in 1 (0.3%) cases. Conclusion: Sydney system of grading is best to evaluate chronic gastritis and relia-ble indicator of H. Pylori microorganism. In legal terms, sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct that intimidate, hostile, or offensive to the work environment. In fact, sexual harassment ranges from repeated offensive or belittling jokes to a workplace full of offensive pornography (creating a hostile work environment) to sexual assault. Most often sexual harassment takes the form of men harassing women, but it can also be conducted onto men and between sexes. Superiors or coworkers who discriminate employee on basis of sex can be a form of sexual harassment when the act is not welcome by the employee. Sex discrimination is prohibited in every aspect of the employment relationship, from hiring, interviewing, and starting salaries to promotions, benefits, job responsibilities, firings, and layoffs. In Malaysia, sexual harassment can be seen as civil and criminal offences depending on what are the victim claims. As an employee the employment Act 1955 (amendment 2012) provide some improvements to Sexual harassment prevention at workplace. Complaint relating to sexual harassment can be made (i) by an employee against another employee; (ii) by an employee against any employer; or (iii) by an employer against an employee. These provision place a duty not only on the employer but the Director General and Minister of Human Resources to conduct enquiry into the Sexual harassment allegation. This paper will dwell on (a) the sexual harassment that cause the hostile environment, such as sexual discrimination and offensive pornography; (b) to determine how women become victimize (c) complaint procedures to prevention of sexual harassment at workplaces and, (d) the legal and economic implications because of the sexual harassment conducted on the victims

Using design-thinking to investigate and improve patient experience

Understanding and enhancing the patient experience can lead to improved healthcare outcomes. The purpose of this study was to capture a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the patient experience on an inpatient medical teaching unit in order to identify key deficiencies and unmet needs. We then aim to implement a design-thinking methodology to find innovative ways to solve these deficiencies. Here we present the first two phases of this four-phased study. We retrospectively and prospectively collected quantitative data about patient experience with the Canadian Patient Experiences Survey-Inpatient Care. We then used this data to guide patient interviews. We identified several key deficiencies including call bell response times, noise levels at night, pain control, education about medication side effects, communication between healthcare team members, and how well healthcare team members remain up to date about patient care. In the final two phases of our study, we will select one or more of these deficiencies and collaborate with patients and other stakeholders to rapidly create, employ, and assess the impact of prototypes through an iterative action cycle until effective and sustainable solutions are found. Nano-enable materials promoting sustainability and resilience in modern agriculture

    Get PDF
Intensive conventional agriculture and climate change have induced severe ecological damages and threatened global food security, claiming a reorientation of agricultural management and public policies towards a more sustainable development model. In this context, nanomaterials promise to support this transition by promoting mitigation, enhancing productivity, and reducing contamination. This review gathers recent research innovations on smart nanoformulations and delivery systems improving crop protection and plant nutrition, nanoremediation strategies for contaminated soils, nanosensors for plant health and food quality and safety monitoring, and nanomaterials as smart food-packaging. It also highlights the impact of engineered nanomaterials on soil microbial communities, and potential environmental risks, along with future research directions. Although large-scale production and in-field testing of nano-agrochemicals are still ongoing, the collected information indicates improvements in uptake, use efficiency, targeted delivery of the active ingredients, and reduction of leaching and pollution. Nanoremediation seems to have a low negative impact on microbial communities while promoting biodiversity. Nanosensors enable high-resolution crop monitoring and sustainable management of the resources, while nano-packaging confers catalytic, antimicrobial, and barrier properties, preserving food safety and preventing food waste. Though, the application of nanomaterials to the agri-food sector requires a specific risk assessment supporting proper regulations and public acceptance.Fil: Ur Rahim, Hafeez.
