This research is centred on the structures for educational coordination and pedagogic supervision in the various curricular departments. The purpose of the study is to better understand the concepts that department coordinators, professors and the director her/himself have regarding supervision and coordination, with particular emphasis on the supervisory and coordinative practices that are employed, those responsible for reconciling them and the sector in which they are practiced. A further objective is the identification of the constraints to the exercise of these functions by those responsible for them and the conditions that may facilitate the supervisory processes and, lastly, the presentation of a chart capable of increasing the potential of the supervisory practices from the standpoint of a training project that one hopes will be positive in terms of organizational and professional development, as regards the educational process. The use of a qualitative methodology privileges a descriptive and interpretative approach, whose investigative design fits in within the framework of a case study where one can identify action-investigation characteristics, particularly when the participants, throughout the process, reflect on the decision and the action and identify aspects of improvement, to ensure them for the future. Emphasis is also placed on the creation of contemplative opportunities through meetings of a training nature that are concentrated on carrying out of interviews, where these are taken on as moments of shared deliberation, that enable one to better know the educational context and encourage joint deliberation of the supervisory practices. The questionnaire, the analysis of documents and the field notes of the researcher complete the methodological triangulation. This study led to an understanding of the functional organics of the department and the manner by which the school centralizes the supervisory skills on the disciplinary groups and on their representatives. One is also led to understand the importance of promoting collaborative work, within the heart of the group, it being the coordinator’s responsibility to supervise these practices, which corresponds to a supervisory concept that gives preference to paired work, that is, hetero-supervision

__________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis work is a proposed site for the teaching of Portuguese as a second language for children 8-10 years of immersion context. The research was based on the communicative approach of language, in which theory and activities must be contextualized. We started from the critical analysis of two sites in the market teaching Portuguese as their mother tongue for the production of a specific site for Portuguese as a second language. The site "Super Parque" is under construction and shall focus on an amusement park and a zoo (“Parque de Diversões” and “Zoológico”, respectively). From the images of toys and animals, children, beyond learning new words, should increase their knowledge about some grammar features: adjectives, gender and number. The complementary sections "Curiosidades" and "Atividades" come in line with the objectives of the site to enrich your knowledge and make the learning process more fun and enjoyable

The laborious microscopic agglutination test (MAT) is the gold standard serologic test for laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis. We developed EIA based serologic assays using recombinant proteins (rLigA, rLigB, rLipL32) and whole-cell extracts from eight Leptospira serovars as antigen and assessed the diagnostic performance of the new assay within each class, against MAT positive (MAT+) human sera panels from Portugal/PT (n = 143) and Angola/AO (n = 100). We found that a combination of recombinant proteins rLigA, rLigB and rLipL32 correctly identified antigen-specific IgG from patients with clinical and laboratory confirmed leptospirosis (MAT+) with 92% sensitivity and ~ 97% specificity (AUC 0.974) in serum from the provinces of Luanda (LDA) and Huambo (HBO) in Angola. A combination of whole cell extracts of L. interrogans sv Copenhageni (LiC), L. kirschneri Mozdok (LkM), L. borgpetersenii Arborea (LbA) and L. biflexa Patoc (LbP) accurately identified patients with clinical and laboratory confirmed leptospirosis (MAT+) with 100% sensitivity and ~ 98% specificity for all provinces of Angola and Portugal (AUC: 0.997 for AO/LDA/HBO, 1.000 for AO/HLA, 0.999 for PT/AZ and 1.000 for PT/LIS). Interestingly, we found that MAT+ IgG+ serum from Angola had a significantly higher presence of IgD and that IgG3/IgG1 isotypes were significantly increased in the MAT+ IgG+ serum from Portugal. Given that IgM/IgD class and IgG3/IgG1 specific isotypes are produced in the earliest course of infection, immunoglobulin G isotyping may be used to inform diagnosis of acute leptospirosis. The speed, ease of use and accuracy of EIA tests make them excellent alternatives to the laborious and expensive MAT for screening acute infection in areas where circulating serovars of pathogenic Leptospira are well defined.publishersversionepub_ahead_of_prin

Metabolic flux response to salt induced stress in the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii

The toxic effect of NaCl and KCl, on growth of the marine yeast Debaryomyces hansenii on glucose or glycerol was studied. Above threshold value both salts inhibited specific growth rate, specific glucose and glycerol respiration rates and specific glucose fermentation rate, as well as biomass yields. The exponential inhibition constant, k, and minimum toxic concentration, cmin, were similar for all physiological parameters assayed. The effect of either salt in the specific activity of several glycolytic enzymes showed a similar inhibition pattern, although at much lower salt concentrations. In agreement with published results on glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase stimulation by salt, we present evidence in which a general glycolytic flux deviation could occur naturally during salt stress, due to the intrinsic sensitivity of the glycolytic enzymes responsible for the prosecution of glycolysis to intracellular ion concentrations.EC Contract CT 93-830 from AIR Program

Apresentação efectuada nas "11as Jornadas de Biologia de Leveduras Professor Nicolau van Uden", realizadas na Escola Superior Agrária de Bragança, em Maio de 2003.Glycerol, besides acting as compatible solute, accumulated by S. cerevisiae to counteract the low aw stress environments, is a key compound in the regulation of multiple metabolic pathways. Most of the genes involved in glycerol consumption and production are now available for this yeast. Furthermore, three genes had been described as involved in glycerol uptake as well as export, respectively, GUP1/21 and FPS123. Altogether, these genes regulate intracellular glycerol levels in a way not yet completely unveiled. Some of these mechanisms, like the stimulation of glycerol production and accumulation under stress growth conditions and the presence of constituvely active transport for glycerol, are common to a series of other yeasts4. Being so, we decided to search for some of the genes from glycerol uptake and metabolism in some of those yeasts. We began using the partial genome sequencing available for several yeasts from the Génolevures Program. Further ahead we included Candida albicans from Stanford Genome Sequencing Data Base. Our search focused on GUP1/2, FPS1, GPD1/2 (glycerol 3-P dehydrogenase) and GUT1 (glycerol kinase) genes. From this search we choosed the sequences with higher similarity, which were present in Candida tropicalis, Kluveryomyces marxianus, Kluveryomyces lactis, Kluveryomyces thermotolerans, Pichia angusta, Pichia sorbitophila and Zigossacharomyces rouxii, besides Candida albicans. The entire sequences of the genes were obtained using standard procedures, like primer walking sequencing and RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends). Genes were obtained by PCR and complementation analysis was done. Sequences were used to create/enlarge gene families, to explore the evolutionary relationship of these species and to establish the putative relation between sequence and function

Dilemmas of girls and women in engineering: a study in Portugal

    Get PDF
The reason that girls and women withdraw from science and technology education and careers has been a universal concern in the social sciences. This study investigated how gendered constructions of identity are translated into the barriers and fears that female students and professional women experience in decision-making about their careers. We conducted interviews with 63 girls and 39 women in academic and professional engineering careers, focusing on their interpersonal relationships with boys and men in their school and occupational engineering settings, respectively. Participant discourse highlighted the difficulties women face when managing the antagonistic discourses of femininity and masculinity in a social environment in which they are frequently forced to submit to hegemonic masculinity. The consequences of women’s differing discourses about the “masculine world” and the “feminine world” are discussed, and some strategies for creating more equalitarian relational environments in school and work settings are discussed.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
