    Get PDF
In today’s society space is overloaded with visual information, thus digital platforms are being increasingly used in design and could contribute to hinder this trend, assuming digital media and mobile platforms as an alternative to analogical media (paper support). In what concerns wayfinding systems, they need to allow more then to reach a point, starting from another, they should allow the experience and the knowledge of space, by allowing several layers of information, that people can use or not, depending on their interests and ambitions. This paper presents a study about the preferences and difficulties of people over 50 years old in the use of analogical and digital maps and discusses the possibility of the use of wayfinding systems in digital means for this age group, regarding the Design principles and inclusivity

In this article, we start from a literature review on the concept of Information Design and analyze how and why the hermeneutic process of knowledge construction AQ1 can be applied to visual information systems. We present several typological approaches associated with Information Design, such as DiagramAQ2 matic Design, Schematic Design, Infographic Design, and Wayfinding Design, sometimes with common or different graphic characteristics, the greater or lesser complexity associated with it and howthe elements that constitute the language and visual grammar contribute to the organization, systematization, and understanding AQ3 of the information produced in this context

Today entrepreneurship education is an important issue to improve the process of creating new firm assuming new risks and rewards. The theoretical discussion about around the question: “Entrepreneurs are born or made?” assume that is possible educate to be entrepreneurs. Schools have an important role in this process. Believing in this possibility our Business School developed a set of pedagogical methodologies supported in apprenticeship based on “learning by doing”. This pedagogical methodology was created through a study of best practices. This study aims to propose a set of innovative methodologies and students perceptions about their apprenticeship experience/process. The study concludes with a set of recommendations and a best practices manual useful to appliance in higher education.Innovative methodologies; entrepreneurship education; learning by doing

Chestnut blight in the Minho region. Population structure and genetic variability of Cryphonectria parasitica

Cryphonectria parasitica, the causal agent of chestnut blight, was considered one of the main factors of mortality of Castanea sativa. Introduced in Portugal in the 1990s, and with epidemic development, the disease has manifested high aggressiveness and a rapid dispersion. Currently it has a widespread distribution in the chestnut production regions. Chemical, physical and cultural control means are not effective to control Chestnut Blight and only biological control by hypovirulence has shown to be effective in Europe. The spread of the hypovirus is directly linked to the vegetative compatibility types (VCType) of the fungal populations, so there is a need to study the population structure of C. parasitica and identify the VCTypes present in each subpopulation. The incidence of Chestnut Blight was assessed in three chestnut groves in the Minho region, and the C. parasitica isolates obtained were further characterized. Each isolate was allocated to a VCType by matching with reference isolates, and the genetic variability of selected isolates was evaluated by BOX-PCR. The isolates obtained were functionally diverse comprising over five VCType, with EU-11 (62%), followed by EU-2 (20%), EU-1 e EU- 66 (5, 5%) and EU-12 (7%). Banding patterns obtained by box-PCR fingerprinting did not reflect geographical origin or the VCType of the isolate

Assim, o presente artigo aborda a questão da evolução da sinalética, do conceito de Património e da necessidade de promoção do diålogo entre o património material e imaterial, refletindo sobre as diferentes formas de acesso à informação em contexto de sistemas wayfinding.ABSTRACT : Finding the way is part of the ancestral needs of the human being, as can be understood from a brief look at the evolution of signage and the resources used by man to facilitate access to different places. Goals and methods differ, according to social and cultural needs and the means available in each era. Nowadays, promoting access to know ledge and enjoyment of the Heritage is a necessity arising from the processes of globalization and the determination to preserve a plural and diverse society. In this sense, promoting the dialogue between Material and Intangible Heritage through cultural routes, communicated through the design of wayfinding systems, is a requirement for the full understanding of both. Thus, this article addresses the issue of the evolution of sign age, the concept of Heritage and the need to promote dialogue between the material and immaterial heritage, reflecting on the different forms of access to information in the context of wayfinding systems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A review of the parasites of deep-water fishes from Macaronesian Islands, North-East Atlantic Ocean

    Get PDF
The deep-water fish fauna of Macaronesian islands is currently estimated at a total of 1029 different fish species, but records of both ecto- and endoparasites are from only about 30 of those species. This fact presents an exciting field of research for scientists interested in fish parasitology, by exploring the structure of parasite communities and their connections with ecological and oceanographic variables. Research on the effect of climatic changes on the parasite faunas, on the occurrence of fish parasites in man and its impact on human health, has not been carried out to date. The present review aims to collate our present knowledge about the parasites of deep-water fishes of Macaronesia, and to suggest directions for future research on the parasites of fishes from the deepwater realm. A checklist of the parasites infecting the deep-water fishes from this region is included.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
