Dual augmentation for aerobic bioremediation of MTBE and TCE pollution in heavy metal-contaminated soil
In this work we isolated from soil and
characterized several bacterial strains capable of
either resisting high concentrations of heavy metals
(Cd2+ or Hg2+ or Pb2+) or degrading the common
soil and groundwater pollutants MTBE (methyl-tertbutyl
ether) or TCE (trichloroethylene). We then used
soil microcosms exposed to MTBE (50 mg/l) or TCE
(50 mg/l) in the presence of one heavy metal (Cd 10
ppm or Hg 5 ppm or Pb 50 or 100 ppm) and two
bacterial isolates at a time, a degrader plus a metalresistant
strain. Some of these two-membered consortia
showed degradation efficiencies well higher
(49–182% higher) than those expected under the
conditions employed, demonstrating the occurrence
of a synergetic relationship between the strains used.
Our results show the efficacy of the dual augmentation
strategy for MTBE and TCE bioremediation in
the presence of heavy metals
Benzene biodegradability tests on a residual granitic soil
Benzene is a component of most fuels and an important industrial solvent. It is widely spread in soils, sediments
and groundwater near diesel/gasoline service stations, refineries and in other industrial areas. For benzene, as other
BTEXs, the most used in-situ remediation technology is Soil Vapour Extraction followed by bioremediation. In the
present work, a bacterial consortium was developed for the systematic study of the benzene bioremediation of soils
contaminated. The effectiveness of biodegradation was studied in a residual granitic soil. The developed microorganism
consortium was collected from a protection area of crude storage tanks in a refinery. Our results showed that the
developed consortium was efficient in degrading benzene (about 18 days for soil remediation contaminated with 140
mg of benzene per kg of residual granitic soil in lab-scale studies)
Microorganisms: the reason to perform endodontics
That we perform Endodontics because there are microorganisms is now beyond doubt. Nevertheless, not only the microorganisms, but also the host response have a profound effect on the progression of the disease.
Many papers confirmed the polymicrobial nature of pulpal and periapical diseases of endodontic origin and the efficiency of the chemo-mechanical procedures based on physical and chemical elimination of their etiologic factors, whose principles were first presented as far as 1928 by Hall.
Since not only bacterial load may be related to the clinical outcome, but also the bacterial composition of the
microbiological canal ecosystem, we aimed at the enumeration of the microorganisms present in the different types of endodontic infections.
Although the emerging picture is clearly a complex one, not allowing clear-cut association of bacteria and clinical situation, only the further pursuit of elucidation of the many factors involved (including geographical variability) will ultimately lead to rational treatment solutions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Dermatologia na Ilha do Corvo Açores
Concerning the premium «dermatologist from the Heart» awarded by the Fondation La Roche Posay in 2014, we put into practice the winning project "Corvo Island Dermatology". The project’s main objective was to perform a screening of the skin in an area of the country with difficult geographical accessibility to specialized health care. The island has a single doctor, a general practitioner - Dr. José Pinto Faustino. The screening was performed for 5 days, between 13 and 18 July 2015 in the Health Unit of Corvo. There were attended 120 people living on the island that were observed by 2 participant dermatologists. No skin diseases with statistical significance were detected.
How to Know it is "the One"? Selecting the Most Suitable Solution from the Pareto Optimal Set. Application to Sectorization
Multi-objective optimization (MOO) considers several objectives to find a feasible set of solutions. Selecting a solution from Pareto frontier (PF) solutions requires further effort. This work proposes a new classification procedure that fits into the analytic hierarchy Process (AHP) to pick the best solution. The method classifies PF solutions using pairwise comparison matrices for each objective. Sectorization is the problem of splitting a region into smaller sectors based on multiple objectives. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested in such problems using our instances and real data from a Portuguese delivery company. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to obtain PF solutions based on three objectives. The proposed method rapidly selects an appropriate solution. The method was assessed by comparing it with a method based on a weighted composite single-objective function. (original abstract
A resectorization of fire brigades in the north of Portugal
Sectorization can be regarded as a division of a territory into smaller regions
to deal with a complex problem involving multiple-criteria.
Resectorization intends to achieve another sectorization, according to some
new conditions but avoiding substantial changes.
An example of this can be the distribution of geographical areas by fire
brigades. In Portugal, fire brigades must protect and rescue the population in
the areas surrounding their fire stations. So we will use the current sectorization,
the geographic and population characteristics of the areas and the fire brigades’
response capacity to provide an optimised resectorization, in order to decrease
rescue time.
To achieve that, we will use a decision support system using different optimisation
methods, such as Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA
II), which provides an effective sectorization concerning compactness and equilibrium
