    Get PDF
This paper aims to identify the nature of the relationships that are established amongst agents who co-operate in terms of innovation practices. It analyses whether the entrepreneurial innovation capability of firms is stimulated through the relationships developed with external partners. The data of 2nd Community Innovation Survey of EUROSTAT is used in a logistic model. In the estimation process of the Logit function, the entrepreneurial innovation capability is considered as the answer variable. The scientific agents who cooperate in terms of innovation activities impact, positively, on the propensity to engage in innovative advances revealed by the firms, at the level of product innovation. The paper presents policy implications, which may be used in the design of public policies for fostering open innovation networks between scientific agents and firms.Innovation; Networks; Entrepreneurial Innovation Capability

In the context of globalisation, innovation is considered as a key factor for enhancing the competitiveness of firms. Nowadays, it is widely accepted that Portuguese firms face an increasing competitive environment, which is characterised by internationalization and globalization. In this sense, it becomes important to analyse the determinant factors of innovation capability of firms. This paper aims to identify and analyse the degree of importance of the determinant factors of innovation capability of Portuguese industrial firms. The data obtained through the 2rd Community Innovation Survey (CIS II) conducted by EUROSTAT, is used in a linear regression model. The entrepreneurial innovative capability, measured as product innovation, is considered as the variable answer, in the estimation process of a Logit function. The paper presents an innovative contribution since it uses a set of five determinant factors of innovation capability of industrial firms, at a product innovation level. Technological capacity, dimension of the firm, activity sector, market orientation and location of the firm, are considered as determinants factors of innovation capability of the firms. The results of the joint analysis provide the identification of stimulating factors and restraining factors of the entrepreneurial innovative capability of a selected sample of Portuguese industrial firms. Under a Schumpeterian approach, the paper ratifies that large enterprises are more prone to innovate than small enterprises. The dimension plays a role, in terms of the strategic conduct implemented by small firms, which are not so prone to innovate, due to its small dimension. Benchmarking the Portuguese case is particularly important, because small industrial enterprises face restraining conditions imposed by outsourcing contracts that are established between small producers and leading international buyers. This restrains, broadly, the entrepreneurial innovative capability of small industrial enterprises.Innovation; Entrepreneurial Innovative Capability

CSR and Social Marketing: What is the desired role for Universities in fostering Public Policies?

The paper aims to identify the role of Universities in fostering public policies, through the promotion of social responsibility, and the implementation of social marketing initiatives. This innovative approach is particularly interesting since the literature does not cover, until now, the importance of adopting a social responsibility strategy within Universities, in order to foster public policies for development. First, Corporate Social Responsibility should be developed at Universities. For this purpose, an integrative approach that embraces marketing, economic, ecological, and social aspects is proposed, through the design of a strategic action plan, which includes three operational levels: analysis, implementation and assessment. Second, in order to foster the impact of public policies for development, social marketing initiatives should be implemented among institutional and social networks where Universities assume an increasing strategic role.Corporate Social Responsibility; Government Policy; Social Marketing

Diferentes concepções de qualidade da escola

    Get PDF

ABSTRACT: The main topic issue addressed in this study is school quality and how it relates to the assessment of teaching institutions. Based on bibliography and documentation by acknowledged authors and entities, this work is firstly aimed at characterizing the various perspectives on quality schools, or on the qualities wished for at different schools, which are related to the most important objectives for each of them. The research also takes into account the group of quality indicators of a teaching institution, as well as the factors that may influence that quality. Based on that reference, this work focuses on finding out whether the direct intervenients in the process share the same notions of quality or if, on the contrary, they reveal differences according to their roles in the educational community. The study has been carried out at two different schools: a school with students ranging from 5th to 9th grades (2°/3° cycles) and a secondary school, with the purpose of identifying possible similarities or differences between target groups at each level and attaining a conclusion as to whether there is a specific quality pattern, according to each level. Suggestions to enhance school quality have also been studied, in an attempt to make the research more thorough and useful at each teaching institution. While processing the information gathered during research, a globalizing data analysis has been carried out, which made it possible to infer some conclusions on the respondents' opinions

First record of the nudibranch tenellia adspersa (Nordmann, 1845) in Portugal, associated with the invasive hydrozoan cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771)

The estuarine nudibranch Tenellia adspersa (Nordmann, 1845) was recorded for the first time in Portugal, while sampling for fouling fauna of artificial structures along the salinity gradient of the Guadiana estuary (SW Iberian Peninsula). Two specimens were found in association with the invasive hydrozoan Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) and kept in the laboratory for taxonomy purposes. After two days, batches of eggs were seen in C. caspia branches, while the nudibranchs were also actively feeding on the hydrozoan polyps. The fast generation times of T. adspersa, along with its food preference for C. caspia, might suggest a positive role of the nudibranch on controlling this invasive hydrozoan in the Guadiana estuary. Introduction routes and facilitation interactions are discussed.FCT: SFRH/BD/140556/2018/ PTDC/MAR-BIO/0440/2014/ UID/04326/2020/ (COMPETE - Operational Competitiveness Programme)/ DL57/2016/CP1361/CT0008.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Mass media as socialization agents emphasize the look and physical appearance, by displaying and advertising the thin body as an ideal to be achieved. In the last years, the role of media in body image has been considered, mainly due to the growth of eating disorders. For this reason, it has earned the attention of mass media, body, body image and eating disorders researchers. However, the type and degree of their influence is not consensual. In this study it is our purpose to study female magazines advertisements influence on adolescent girls’ body image. This complex relation is taken at two levels: first, the level of audience impacts, namely in self evaluation and investments in body image; second, the level of female body representations in magazines advertising, in order to establish the type of body and related social values represented. To accomplish our goals, we used a set of the most applied theories and a mixed methodology – quantitative and qualitative. To study audience impacts we conducted a self administration questionnaire to adolescent girls from Sintra’s public secondary schools. On the other hand, to study advertising body representations we used content and semiotics analysis. Our main conclusions point to the homogeneity and standardization of a thin body type represented in female magazines advertisements, which is associated to positive values. In turn, we concluded that – through social comparison mechanisms – adolescent girls suffer impacts in their body image self evaluation and investments, such as weight loss behaviours. We thus realize a contingencial but fundamental role of media influence in body image, and we propose an analysis model, which combines different aspects of existing theories
