Parent Involvement in Contested Times: A Brief Analysis of the Effects of Anti-Immigrant Policies on Latinx Immigrant Parent Involvement
How do perceived community and school cultural values affect Latinx immigrant parents’ decisions to engage with their children’s schools? What lessons might their experiences have for our understanding of parent involvement beyond the parameters of traditional models of parent involvement? Engaging parents as advocates for school success in the home is particularly important for English Language Learners (ELs). Tapping into the experiences of EL parents is a resource educators can use to increase parental involvement and, consequently, student academic achievement.
This qualitative case study grounded in Critical Inquiry and Cultural Historic Activity Theory examined the perceptions and experiences of 5 working-class Latino immigrant mothers whose children were enrolled in two elementary schools in southern California. Parents were purposively selected from two predominantly Latinx urban Elementary schools to participate in individual interviews and focus groups. This study addresses an urgent need to survey the current context of immigrant families and, because most research on the subject of parent involvement takes a subtractive or deficit approach that often devalues the experiences and perceptions of Latinx immigrant parents, it responds to a need for studies that approach the subject from an asset based perspective that includes the voices of the parents themselves. Examining the narratives of the parents from their own perspectives, this study provides a platform from which parent voices can be heard and creates a space where the historical and current particulars of home and community practices, histories, and activities become as relevant as those of the dominant culture(s), thus creating equitable conditions where the social justice mission of education—which is to provide quality education for all—is more likely to be fulfilled
Analytic and bootstrap approximations of prediction errors under a multivariate fay-herriot model
A Multivariate Fay-Herriot model is used to aid the prediction of small area parameters of dependent variables with sample data aggregated to area level. The empirical best linear unbiased predictor of the parameter vector is used, and an approximation of the elements of the mean cross product error matrix is obtained by an extension of the results of Prasad and Rao (1990) to the multiparameter case. Three different bootstrap approximations of those elements are introduced, and a simulation study is developed in order to compare the efficiency of all presented approximations, including a comparison under lack of normality. Further, the number of replications needed for the bootstrap procedures to get stabilized are studied
The combination of several risk factors caused by obesity, sedentary lifestyle or different genetic factors, leads to suffer "metabolic syndrome", which increases the chance of developing cardiovascular disease. Objectives: Describe the risk of cardiovascular disease in members of Guardia Civil from a military complex in Madrid. Material and method: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out by a 30 questions-survey, analytics and anthropometric measurements to the Guardia Civil staff who came to the medical service of their quartering between September 1 and October 31, 2014. Results: Sample of 76 subjects aged 20-62. 7’89% of individuals have three or more parameters related with metabolic syndrome diagnosis. Conclusions: Sedentary lifestyle and poor nutritional habits act negatively in lipid profile, blood pressure and BMI, increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome and, therefore, cardiovascular diseasesLa conjunción de varios factores de riesgo originados por la obesidad, el sedentarismo o por diversos factores genéticos, lleva a padecer el llamado “Síndrome Metabólico”, que incrementa la posibilidad de desarrollar enfermedades cardiovasculares.
Innovation and communication technologies + Problem based learning: a new approach for teaching architecture
This article presents the results obtained during its first year of application in the educational innovation project called “New frameworks of teaching: ICT applied to problem based learning in technical bachelors” (PIE 15-166) developed at the School of Architecture in the University of Malaga. This has been focused on the development of educational strategies based on exploiting the potential of ICT, taking as a framework the ABP. Its application on subjects from different areas of knowledge (architectural composition, urban planning, projects and architectural constructions) has allowed assessing the adaptability of this methodology depending on the content. Among the obtained results can be highlighted the improvement in cross curricular coordination between subjects from different fields of studies, providing different ways of synchronous and asynchronous communication between students and teachers to generate a greater interaction between all the involved subjects; increasing in addition the interest and an improvement of the results.Universidad de Málaga. Processing and characterisation of Calcium SulfoAluminate (CSA) eco-cements coated with a hybrid organo-inorganic material for photocatalytic applications
On the one hand, Calcium SulfoAluminate (CSA) eco-cements are receiving increasing attention since their manufacture produces up to 40% less CO2 than ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In addition, they show interesting properties such as high early-age strengths, short setting times, impermeability, sulfate and chloride corrosion resistance and low alkalinity.
On the other hand, water treatment is a key issue and it will become much more important in the decades ahead. We have developed a photocatalytic material capable to degrade contaminants in water, under both UVA and visible radiations. In both cases, it works more effectively than nano-TiO2 (Evonik P25).
The environmental benefits of the use of CSA eco-cements with a photocatalyst are two folds: the photocatalytic treatment of contaminated water, and lower CO2 emissions because of the use of eco-cements rather than OPC. However, before preparing the coating, different parameters need to be under control. This includes the effect of the photocatalyst onto the eco-cement (setting time, phase assemblage, and so on), and the effect of the eco-cement on the photocatalyst.
This work deals with the processing and characterisation of coatings onto CSA eco-cement pastes, including rheological behaviour, setting time, adhesion, and so on.Universidad de Málaga. Work related stress and well-being: the roles of direct action coping and palliative coping
The purpose of the present study is to analyze the roles of direct action coping and palliative coping in the relationship between work stressors and psychological well-being, as well as their possible interactions, in a sample of 464 bank employees. Hierarchical regression analyses showed main effects of direct action coping on well-being. Palliative coping predicts higher levels of psychological distress. Contrary to what was expected, the interactions between work stressors and direct action coping were not significant. Palliative coping interacted with work stressors when predicting psychosomatic complaints. The interaction between the two types of coping was significant on psychosomatic complaints and psychological distress, but not on job satisfaction. The paper discusses theoretical and practical implications of these results, in order to design intervention strategies to prevent and manage job stress
This research article explores one of the least addressed facets of teachers' unionism, which is associated with its pedagogical identity. In this sense, we want to show that despite the crisis of unionism and in particular of the teachers' union, some unions like the Association of Teachers and Education Workers of Cauca (ASOINCA) in Colombia, have been making pedagogical-political bets that contribute to the strengthening of teachers, schools and the union in particular. The union groups constitute social mobilizations for education, linked to and go beyond the union demands of trade unionism in general, making it possible to strengthen an identity relationship with a political-pedagogical position of the teaching work.
