The Athesian Volcanic District (AVD), a thick sequence of andesitic to rhyolitic lava and ignimbrite, overlies both the Variscan basement of the Dolomites and, where present, the continental basal conglomerate of Upper Carboniferous(?) to Early Permian age. This volcanic activity is known to mark the margin of the intra-Pangea megashear system between Gondwana and Laurasia, the onset age of which is determined in this study. SHRIMP U-Pb dating on zircon from Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck (Isarco/Eisack valley) basaltic andesite yields an age of 290.7 ± 3 Ma, providing the oldest record of andesite volcanic activity yet documented in the AVD. Two younger dates (279.9 ± 3.3 and 278.6 ± 3.1 Ma) obtained for the andesitic necks of M. dei Ginepri (Eores/Aferer valley) and Col Quaterna (western Comelico), respectively, probably represent a second pulse of andesite magmatic activity. Near Chiusa/Klausen, the volcanoclastic deposits at the bottom of the Funes/Villnoss valley volcano-sedimentary complex only contain detrital zircons, dated at 469 ± 6 Ma; these probably derive from erosion of Paleozoic porphyroids. Other zircons from the same sediments and inherited cores of magmatic andesite crystals give Paleoproterozoic (1953.6 ± 22.1, 1834.6 ± 69.3, 1773.6 ± 25.1 Ma), Early Neoproterozoic (1015 ± 14 Ma) and Late Neoproterozoic (728.4 ± 9.6, 687.6 ± 7.6 Ma) ages. These ancient detrital and inherited zircon ages fit the model that envisages the Dolomite region as being tectonically coherent with Africa, at least until the Lower Permian

Safflower production is mainly concentrated in northwestern Argentina although the most suitable area for its production is the central, Semiarid Pampean Region. The response of different varieties able to produce high sustainable yields was studied under different environments, with the idea of promoting these varieties in the study region. Six variety trials were carried out at two locations in the study area, Santa Rosa (La Pampa, 36° 39’ S, 64° 16’ W) and Tres Picos (Buenos Aires, 38° 16’ S, 62° 13’ W), during several years. Relative yield was used as a measure of safflower stability. Varieties S-541, S-200 and S-400 were the most stable and showed the highest grain and oil yields.Fil: Mirassón, H.R.. Photoionization spectroscopy of excited states of cold cesium dimers

Photoionization spectroscopy of cold cesium dimers obtained by photoassociation of cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap is reported here. In particular, we report on the observation and on the spectroscopic analysis of all the excited states that have actually been used for efficient detection of cold molecules stabilized in the triplet a^3Sigma_u^+ ground state. They are: the (1)^3Sigma_g^+ state connected to the 6s+6p asymptote, the (2)^3Sigma_g^+ and (2)^3Pi_g states connected to the 6s+5d asymptote and finally the (3)^3Sigma_g^+ state connected to the 6s + 7s asymptote. The detection through these states spans a wide range of laser energies, from 8000 to 16500 cm-1, obtained with different laser dyes and techniques. Information on the initial distribution of cold molecules among the different vibrational levels of the a^3Sigma_u^+ ground state is also provided. This spectroscopic knowledge is important when conceiving schemes for quantum manipulation, population transfer and optical detection of cold cesium molecules.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. Analysis and modelling of motility of cell populations with MotoCell

    Get PDF
Background Cell motility plays a central role in development, wound-healing and tumour invasion. Cultures of eucariotic cells are a complex system where most cells move according to 'random' patterns, but may also be induced to a more coordinate migration by means of specific stimuli, such as the presence of chemical attractants or the introduction of a mechanical stimulus. Various tools have been developed that work by keeping track of the paths followed by specific objects and by performing statistical analysis on the recorded path data. The available tools include desktop applications or macros running within a commercial package, which address specific aspects of the process. Results An online application, MotoCell, was developed to evaluate the motility of cell populations maintained in various experimental conditions. Statistical analysis of cell behaviour consists of the evaluation of descriptive parameters such as average speed and angle, directional persistence, path vector length, calculated for the whole population as well as for each cell and for each step of the migration; in this way the behaviour of a whole cell population may be assessed as a whole or as a sum of individual entities. The directional movement of objects may be studied by eliminating the modulo effect in circular statistics analysis, able to evaluate linear dispersion coefficient (R) and angular dispersion (S) values together with average angles. A case study is provided where the system is used to characterize motility of RasV12 transformed NIH3T3 fibroblasts. Conclusion Here we describe a comprehensive tool which takes care of all steps in cell motility analysis, including interactive cell tracking, path editing and statistical analysis of cell movement, all within a freely available online service. Although based on a standard web interface, the program is very fast and interactive and is immediately available to a large number of users, while exploiting the web approach in a very effective way. The ability to evaluate the behaviour of single cells allows to draw the attention on specific correlations, such as linearity of movement and deviation from the expected direction. In addition to population statistics, the analysis of single cells allows to group the cells into subpopulations, or even to evaluate the behaviour of each cell with respect to a variable reference, such as the direction of a wound or the position of the closest cell

Aspirin modulates LPS-induced nitric oxide release in rat glial cells

    Get PDF
Nitric oxide and prostaglandins are among the numerous substances released by activated glial cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high-level aspirin on iNOS expression in cultured rat glial cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as pathological stimulator. Using Western Blotting, we verified that aspirin enhanced LPS-induced iNOS expression and the presence of 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin (15d-PGJ(2)) suppressed this aspirin effect. However, the exposure of LPS-treated glial cells to aspirin resulted in a decrease of NO production. These results suggest that aspirin interferes with the cross-talk of prostaglandins and NO, blocking the endogenous negative control exerted by COX products on iNOS expression. On the other side, aspirin seems to act directly on iNOS reducing its activity, even if it does not completely block NO release by LPS-stimulated glial cells. Then aspirin could maintain homeostatic functions of NO, while it prevents toxic effects, corresponding to high NO concentrations. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

Ras activated ERK and PI3K pathways differentially affect directional movement of cultured fibroblasts.

Background: Cell migration is essential in physiological and pathological processes, such as wound healing and metastasis formation. Ras involvement in these processes has been extensively demonstrated. This work attempts to characterize Ras regulation of the phenomena determining directional cell migration by separately analyzing the role of its principal effector pathways, MAPK and PI3K. Methods: NIH3T3 and NIHRasV12 fibroblasts were followed in wound healing assays to study, in time and under a directional stimulus, cell migration both under standard conditions and in presence of MAPK and PI3K inhibitors. Several parameters, descriptive of specific aspects of cell motion, were evaluated by coupling dynamic microscopy with quantitative and statistical methods. Quantitative Western Blots coupled with immunofluorescence stainings, were used to evaluate ERK activation. Results: Constitutive RasV12 activation confers to NIH3T3 the ability to close the wound faster. Neither increased cell proliferation nor higher speed explains the accelerated healing, but the increased directional migration drives the wound closure. Inhibition of ERK activation, which occurs immediately after wound, greatly blocks the directional migration, while inhibition of PI3K pathway reduces cell speed but does not prevent wound closure. Conclusion: Ras is greatly involved in determining and regulating directionality, ERK is its key effector for starting, driving and regulating directional movement

Effect of polyphenolic compounds on the proteolytic activities of constitutive and immuno-proteasomes

The effect of several polyphenols on the 20S proteasomes, both the constitutive and the LMP proteasomes, isolated from bovine tissues, has been investigated. Polyphenolic compounds show many biological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and antiallergic activities. However, the molecular mechanism underlying these effects has not been identified. It is well established that polyphenols possess inhibitory activities on several enzymes and among them the 20S proteasome. In the present work, the ChT-L, BrAAP, PGPH, and T-L activities of the isolated constitutive and immuno-proteasomes were assayed in order to get an overall information on the polyphenols binding to the complexes. The effects of the polyphenols on the proteasomal activities were analyzed, taking into account the different subunits composition of the two complexes. Furthermore the same activities were measured on whole extracts from cancer cells exposed to EGCG and gallic acid, evaluating, also, their antioxidant action under oxidative stress. EGCG and gallic acid are able to affect the 20S proteasomes functionality, depending on the complex subunit composition and, in cell extracts, they behave both as antioxidants and proteasome effectors

ERP Modulation during Observation of Abstract Paintings by Franz Kline

The aim of this study was to test the involvement of sensorimotor cortical circuits during the beholding of the static consequences of hand gestures devoid of any meaning. In order to verify this hypothesis we performed an EEG experiment presenting to participants images of abstract works of art with marked traces of brushstrokes. The EEG data were analyzed by using Event Related Potentials (ERPs). We aimed to demonstrate a direct involvement of sensorimotor cortical circuits during the beholding of these selected works of abstract art. The stimuli consisted of three different abstract black and white paintings by Franz Kline. Results verified our experimental hypothesis showing the activation of premotor and motor cortical areas during stimuli observation. In addition, abstract works of art observation elicited the activation of reward-related orbitofrontal areas, and cognitive categorization-related prefrontal areas. The cortical sensorimotor activation is a fundamental neurophysiological demonstration of the direct involvement of the cortical motor system in perception of static meaningless images belonging to abstract art. These results support the role of embodied simulation of artist’s gestures in the perception of works of art

The Presence of Toxocara Eggs on Dog’s Fur as Potential Zoonotic Risk in Animal-Assisted Interventions: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) usually contribute to the well-being and health of users/patients, but it is essential that the animals involved in these activities do not represent a source of zoonoses. This systematic review focused on the evaluation of the potential risk of the transmission of Toxocara by dogs’ fur, considering their involvement as the main animal species in AAIs. Three databases were considered: MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and the PRISMA guidelines were used. Out of 162 articles found, 14 papers were identified as eligible for inclusion in the review. Although the findings were very heterogeneous, they showed that regular parasitological surveillance to plan effective control programs is strongly needed to guarantee the health of pets and consequently the public health, according to the concept of One Health. Since AAIs involve patients and/or users potentially susceptible, it is very important to appropriately treat dogs enrolled in these interventions after an accurate diagnosis of parasitic zoonoses
