    Abstract Reducing the energy demand of buildings has become one of the key points of the European Union. The issue related to the air conditioning of old and historical buildings is nowadays one of the most important field of operation for the primary energy saving and, at the same time, for the reduction of the CO 2 emission. The recent development of heat pump able to rise the supply of high temperature at the condenser side makes this technology suitable for the application also in historical buildings that are characterized by low thermal insulation and high thermal capacitance. In this context, the ground source heat pump systems can be used for both heating and cooling. The aim of this work is to analyze the thermal behavior of two historical buildings located in Italy, in Venice and Florence respectively. Detailed computer simulations of the buildings have been carried out by means of a transient calculation tool TRNSYS. Energy simulations of GSHP systems have been performed and a comparison with a common plant system using a gas boiler for heating and air-to-water chiller for cooling has been carried out

    Characterization and thermal performance evaluation of infrared reflective coatings compatible with historic buildings

    Two infrared reflective coatings recently developed as part of the EFFESUS European research project are characterized and evaluated in this paper. Thermal performance, durability, compatibility with historic fabric, and reversibility are all analysed. The results of extensive research that include laboratory analysis of selected substrates, measurements on a large-scale traditional masonry mock-up, thermodynamic simulations, and finally application in to a real historic building in Istanbul, all support the potential of the new coatings to improve the thermal performance of historic buildings, in keeping with their visual integrity and cultural value. Besides their reflective properties, proven by the thermal stress reductions on the treated surfaces, the new coatings are characterized by low visual impact, easy application, material compatibility, and reversibility after application, as well as durability over time.The EFFESUS project has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No. 314678.     Illicit drugs in Emergency Department patients injured in road traffic accidents

    Urine and blood samples from 1730 drivers involved in road accidents (July 2012- December 2015) were analyzed for the evaluation of driving under influence of drug of abuse according to the Lombardia Region guideline. The 22.5 % of urine screenings tested positive for at least one class of drugs. 10.6% of the 1730 drivers were under the influence of drug, being blood concentration above the cut-off limit for at least one active substance; the prevalence of illicit drugs in blood was cocaine (5.7 %), cannabinoids (3.7 %), opiates (1.4 %), methadone (1.4 %), amphetamines (0.2 %). Trend in prevalence showed similar percentage (about 5 %) of cocaine and cannabinoids consumption in the last two years. Poly-drug of abuse consumption emerged in the 10.4 % of the positive blood and alcohol was above the legal limit in 47 % of the subjects driving under the influence of drugs

    EU project "Cheap-GSHPs": the geoexchange field laboratory

    Abstract The Molinella test site is the open-air laboratory of the EU project entitled "Cheap-GSHPs: Cheap and Efficient Application of Reliable Ground Source Heat Exchangers and Pumps". Here, innovative helical heat baskets and steel coaxial probes are installed next to the traditional double-U. The tests involve the probes design as well as materials and drilling techniques and machines, therefore the newly developed GSHEs can be directly compared with the traditional ones with respect to technical issues and energetic performances. The Molinella test site therefore represents a very extraordinary possibility to improve the knowledge of heat transfer processes in shallow geo-exchange systems

    Sensitivity and specificity of in vivo COVID-19 screening by detection dogs: Results of the C19-Screendog multicenter study

    Trained dogs can recognize the volatile organic compounds contained in biological samples of patients with COVID-19 infection. We assessed the sensitivity and specificity of in vivo SARS-CoV- 2 screening by trained dogs. We recruited five dog-handler dyads. In the operant conditioning phase, the dogs were taught to distinguish between positive and negative sweat samples collected from volunteers’ underarms in polymeric tubes. The conditioning was validated by tests involving 16 positive and 48 negative samples held or worn in such a way that the samples were invisible to the dog and handler. In the screening phase the dogs were led by their handlers to a drive-through facility for in vivo screening of volunteers who had just received a nasopharyngeal swab from nursing staff. Each volunteer who had already swabbed was subsequently tested by two dogs, whose responses were recorded as positive, negative, or inconclusive. The dogs’ behavior was constantly monitored for attentiveness and wellbeing. All the dogs passed the conditioning phase, their responses showing a sensitivity of 83-100% and a specificity of 94-100%. The in vivo screening phase involved 1251 subjects, of whom 205 had a COVID-19 positive swab and two dogs per each subject to be screened. Screeningsensitivity and specificity were respectively 91.6-97.6% and 96.3-100% when only one dog was involved, whereas combined screening by two dogs provided a higher sensitivity. Dog wellbeing was also analysed: monitoring of stress and fatigue suggested that the screening activity did not adversely impact the dogs’ wellbeing. This work, by screening a large number of subjects, strengthen recent findings that trained dogs can discriminate between COVID-19 infected and healthy human subjects and introduce two novel research aspects: i) assessement of signs of fatigue and stress in dogs during training and testing, and ii) combining screening by two dogs to improve detection sensitivity and specificity. Using some precautions to reduce the risk of infection and spillover, in vivo COVID-19 screening by a dog-handler dyad can be suitable to quickly screen large numbers of people: it is rapid, non- invasiveand economical, since it does not involve actual sampling, lab resources or waste management, and is suitable to screen large numbers of people

    Pathological characteristics and prognostic effect of peritumoral capsule penetration in renal cell carcinoma after tumor enucleation

    Objective: To evaluate the pathological characteristics of peritumoral capsule (PC) and the prognostic effect of capsule penetration on tumor recurrence in patients treated with tumor enucleation for clinically intracapsular renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). Methods and materials: PC status was analyzed in 304 consecutive patients with single intracapsular RCC. Degree and side of capsule penetration if present were evaluated. Mean (median, range) follow-up was 49 months (46, 25-69). Local recurrence rate, progression-free survival (PFS), and cancer-specific survival were the main outcomes. Statistical analyses included the Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test, and univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. Results: Overall, 51% of RCCs had intact PC and free from neoplastic invasion (PC-), 34.9% had capsular penetration on the parenchymal side (PCK), and 14.1% had tumor invasion on the perirenal fat tissue side (PCF). None of the patients had positive surgical margins. The 5-year PFS rates for tumors PC-, PCK, and PCF were 97.5%, 96.7%, and 77.1%, respectively (P<0.0001).The multivariate Cox model showed PCF to be the sole significant independent predictor of PFS, whereas patients who had PCK did not present a significant increased risk in developing recurrence. Conclusions: Tumor enucleation is an oncologically safe nephron-sparing surgery technique. PCF is a significant and independent predictor of tumor recurrence in patients with clinically intracapsular RCCs scheduled for nephron-sparing surgery. PCK does not predict the risk of recurrence. © 2014 Elsevier Inc
