Distinguishing double neutron star from neutron star-black hole binary populations with gravitational wave observations
Gravitational waves from the merger of two neutron stars cannot be easily
distinguished from those produced by a comparable-mass mixed binary in which
one of the companions is a black hole. Low-mass black holes are interesting
because they could form in the aftermath of the coalescence of two neutron
stars, from the collapse of massive stars, from matter overdensities in the
primordial Universe, or as the outcome of the interaction between neutron stars
and dark matter. Gravitational waves carry the imprint of the internal
composition of neutron stars via the so-called tidal deformability parameter,
which depends on the stellar equation of state and is equal to zero for black
holes. We present a new data analysis strategy powered by Bayesian inference
and machine learning to identify mixed binaries, hence low-mass black holes,
using the distribution of the tidal deformability parameter inferred from
gravitational-wave observations.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures - v2: matches the published version in Phys. Rev.

Certain minimal varieties are set-theoretic complete intersections
We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and
binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This
class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in
particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial
varieties of codimension two
Semi-classical analysis of non self-adjoint transfer matrices in statistical mechanics. I
We propose a way to study one-dimensional statistical mechanics models with
complex-valued action using transfer operators. The argument consists of two
steps. First, the contour of integration is deformed so that the associated
transfer operator is a perturbation of a normal one. Then the transfer operator
is studied using methods of semi-classical analysis.
In this paper we concentrate on the second step, the main technical result
being a semi-classical estimate for powers of an integral operator which is
approximately normal.Comment: 28 pp, improved the presentatio
Tomato ionomic approach for food fortification and safety.
Food fortification is an issue of paramount of importance for people living both in developed
and in developing countries. Among substances listed as "nutriceuticals", essential minerals have
been recognised for their involvement in several healthy issues, involving all ages. In this frame,
food plants are playing a pivotal role since their capability to compartmentalise ions and proteinmetal
complexes in edible organs. Conversely, the accumulation of high metal levels in those
organs may lead to safety problems. In the recent years, thanks to the availability of new and
improved analytical apparatus in both ionic and genomic/transcrittomics areas, it is became feasible
to couple data coming from plant physiology and genetics. Ionomics is the discipline that studies
the cross-analysis of both data sets. Our group, in the frame of GenoPom project granted by MiUR,
is interested to study the ionomics of tomatoes cultivars derived by breeding programmes in which
wild relatives have been used to transfer several useful traits, such as resistance to biotic or abiotic
stresses, fruit composition and textiture, etc. The introgression of the wild genome into the
cultivated one produces new gene combinations. They might lead to the expression of some traits,
such as increased or reduced adsorption of some metals and their exclusion or loading into edible
organs, thus strongly involving the nutritional food value. Our final goal is to put together data
coming from ions homeostasis and gene expression analyses, thus obtaining an ionomic tomato
map related to ions absorption, translocation and accumulation in various plant organs, fruits
included. To follow our hypothesis, we are studying the ionome of Solanum lycopersicum cv. M82
along with 76 Introgression Lines (ILs) produced by interspecific crosses between this cultivar and
the wild species S. pennellii. These ILs are homozygous for small portions of the wild species
genome introgressed into the domesticated M82 one. They are used as a useful tool for mapping
QTL associated with many traits of interest. It is worthy to note that, until now, little information is
available on QTL for ions accumulation in tomato. Moreover, as our knowledge, effects of new
gene combinations in introgressed lines on ions uptake related to food safety have not been
extensively studied. In this presentation we show results coming from the ionome analysis, carried
out on S . lycopersicum M82 and several ILs. Plants were grown in pots in a greenhouse and
watered with deionised water Thirty day-old plants were left to grow for 15 days in the presence of
non-toxic concentration of Cd, Pb, As, Cr and Zn given combined. Leaves of all plants were then
harvested and stored at -80°C for ionome and gene expression analyses. Preliminary results of
ionome analysis of S. lycopersicum M82 and several ILs, carried out using an ICP-MS, showed that
traits correlated to toxic metals and micronutrients accumulation in apical leaves were significantly
modified in response to specific genetic backgrounds. Those results are perhaps due to the
introgression of traits linked to uptake, translocation and accumulation of useful and/or toxic metal
into plant apical leaves and to interactions of the wild type introgressed genomic regions with the
cultivated genome. Also, data are shown on the identification and isolation of Solanum gene
sequences related to ions uptake, translocation and accumulation, useful for further real-time gene
expression evaluation in both cultivated and ILs during the treatments with the above-mentioned
metals
The role of ephemeris and GPSs distribution in high resolution satellite images modeling.
The geometric resolution of the images coming from the new generation satellites is almost competitive with that found in the traditional aerial photograms. The aim of this work is to define the role of satellite ephemerides and to optimise the number andvdistribution of Ground Control Points (GCPs) for the image registration.
A zone of the Campania region in Italy has been used as a test area: it is characterized by a mountainous area without constructions and by flat land areas densely inhabited. The images that have been used relate to different epochs and different satellites such as Spot5, Ikonos2 and QuickBird. Spot5 images have also been used to generate automatic Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).
The assessment of DEM precision has been carried out by comparison with raster DEMs from cartography. The GCPs coordinates have been obtained from a GPS network made up of almost hundred and some of them are used as Check Points (CPs). Different tests have been performed, either varying the number of GCPs or hypothesizing the presence or absence of satellite ephemeris.
Some numerical evaluations confirm that the use of the satellite ephemeris greatly reduces the amount of residuals on the CPs; in the case of Spot5 images this improvement becomes even more evident
Partial purification and MALDI-TOF MS analysis of UN1, a tumor antigen membrane glycoprotein.
UN1 is a membrane glycoprotein that is expressed in immature human thymocytes, a subpopulation of peripheral T lymphocytes, the HPB acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) T-cell line and fetal thymus. We previously reported the isolation of a monoclonal antibody (UN1 mAb) recognizing the UN1 protein that was classified as "unclustered" at the 5th and 6th International Workshop and Conference on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens. UN1 was highly expressed in breast cancer tissues and was undetected in non-proliferative lesions and in normal breast tissues, indicating a role for UN1 in the development of a tumorigenic phenotype of breast cancer cells. In this study, we report a partial purification of the UN1 protein from HPB-ALL T cells by anion-exchange chromatography followed by immunoprecipitation with the UN1 mAb and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. This analysis should assist in identifying the amino acid sequence of UN
Light-Driven Electron Accumulation in a Molecular Pentad
Accumulation and temporary storage of redox equivalents with visible light as an energy input is of pivotal importance for artificial photosynthesis because key reactions, such as CO2 reduction or water oxidation, require the transfer of multiple redox equivalents. We report on the first purely molecular system, in which a long-lived charge-separated state (τ≈870 ns) with two electrons accumulated on a suitable acceptor unit can be observed after excitation with visible light. Importantly, no sacrificial reagents were employed
Discounting in Games across Time Scales
We introduce two-level discounted games played by two players on a
perfect-information stochastic game graph. The upper level game is a discounted
game and the lower level game is an undiscounted reachability game. Two-level
games model hierarchical and sequential decision making under uncertainty
across different time scales. We show the existence of pure memoryless optimal
strategies for both players and an ordered field property for such games. We
show that if there is only one player (Markov decision processes), then the
values can be computed in polynomial time. It follows that whether the value of
a player is equal to a given rational constant in two-level discounted games
can be decided in NP intersected coNP. We also give an alternate strategy
improvement algorithm to compute the value
