The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical load, measured by the vertical ground reaction force (GRF), plantar pressure, and contact area of two jumping head-out aquatic exercises (cross country ski and jumping jacks) performed at 1.30 m water depth. Ten healthy male volunteers, with mean (SD) age 26.5 (4.2) yr, height 175.8 (2.6) cm, weight 73.7 (8.5) kg, body mass index 22.3 (2.5) kg.m-2 participated in this study. Data from both GRF and plantar pressures were obtained by using an insole system. Pairedsamples t-tests were conducted to compare each variable between conditions. Significant differences between exercises were found in all variables (peak force, t(9)=2.52, p = 0.033; peak pressure, t(9)=2.41, p = 0.040 and contact area, t(9)=-2.60, p = 0.029). Jumping exercises can be a suitable option when prescribing water-based exercises

The present study aims to investigate the association of grip strength and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults with different chronic diseases. A cross-section of data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe wave 6 (collected in 2015) was analysed. Grip strength was measured by a handgrip dynamometer, and the European Depression Symptoms 12-item scale (EURO-D) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted. Those in the high strength tertile had 42% (95% confidence interval: 0.50, 0.71; p < 0.005) and 41% (95% confidence interval: 0.50, 0.70; p < 0.001) lower odds of depressive symptoms in the 'no disease' and in the 'metabolic diseases' groups of participants, respectively, compared with those in the lower strength tertile. No statistically significant relationship between grip strength and depression was observed in the 'arthritis diseases' group of participants. The association of grip strength with depressive symptoms must consider, besides gender and age group, the chronic conditions that an individual could have.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An Informational Algorithm as the Basis for Perception-Action Control of the Instantaneous Axes of the Knee

Traditional locomotion studies emphasize an optimization of the desired movement trajectories while ignoring sensory feedback. We propose an information based theory that locomotion is neither triggered nor commanded but controlled. The basis for this control is the information derived from perceiving oneself in the world. Control therefore lies in the human-environment system. In order to test this hypothesis, we derived a mathematical foundation characterizing the energy that is required to perform a rotational twist, with small amplitude, of the instantaneous axes of the knee (IAK). We have found that the joint’s perception of the ground reaction force may be replaced by the co-perception of muscle activation with appropriate intensities. This approach generated an accurate comparison with known joint forces and appears appropriate in so far as predicting the effect on the knee when it is free to twist about the IAK

Healh self-management is the ability to manage internal and external resources, knowledge and motivations related to a chronic clinical condition. The present study proposes the translation and cultural adaptation for the portuguese language, as well as the psychometric properties, of the Communication with Physicians (CwP) and Cognitive Symptoms Management (CSM) scales. After constituting the final version of the scales in the European Portuguese language and culturally adapted to the adult population with chronic disease, the scales were initially applied to a sample of 30 participants, in order to obtain the test-retest reliability, and later to a sample of 217 participants for evaluation of psychometric properties. Participants all had at least one chronic illness and were over 18 years old. The results showed adequate values for the test-retest reliability of 0.72 for the CwP scale and 0.84 for the CSM scale. After confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), acceptable adjustment indexes ranging from 0.37 to 0.87 were found. The composite reliability values were 0.75 for CwP and 0.73 for CSM. Contracts VEM was 0.75 for CwP and 0.32 for CSM. The CFI value was 0.84 and the GFI value was 0.90. The questionnaires were successfully translated and culturally adapted. The AFC values confirm the validity of the psychometric properties to be used in the portuguese population with chronic disease.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if mild running exercise results in improved repair of articular cartilage (AC) full-thickness defects. A perforation was created in a weight-bearing area of the medial femoral condyle in the rate knee. The animals were divided in two groups: intermittent active motion (IAM) and running training (RT) and sacrificed at two periods, four weeks (4wk) and eight weeks (8wk). The nature of the repair tissue besides having improved with time, was better in the training animals. The most common feature observed in the bonding to the adjacent cartilage was the existence of a clear gap between the repair tissue and the residual CA. Concerning the surface congruity the lower index of the RT group at 4 wk might suggest that in the beginning of the repair process a high load magnitude is not beneficial. This study might suggest that, the repair tissue can modulate in response to mechanical loading into a fibrocatilaginous tissue that resembles more the AC in the running animals, as shown by either improved collagen organization or increased amount of collagen (p<0,05-8 wk), and a increased amount of GAG (p<=0,05-4 wk)Available from Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, Servico de Informacao e Documentacao, Av.
