    How can transport provision and associated built environment infrastructure be enhanced and developed to support the mobility needs of individuals as they age?

    First paragraph: Mobility touches every aspect of most of our lives. Restrictions on our mobility are perceived as a loss of freedom, and we seek wherever possible to regain that mobility, or replace it with other forms of mobility. While we immediately think of physical mobility, virtual mobility is increasingly becoming another world that we inhabit and move around in. Older people, however, are the most likely to experience mobility deprivation. The need to be mobile and to travel is related to psychological well-being in older age, and a reduction in mobility can lead to an increase in isolation, loneliness and depression and overall a poorer quality of life. Mobility is important to older people. There are also benefits to society as a whole in increasing travel for older people, including the economic benefits of older people spending more in shops, of them looking after grandchildren, undertaking voluntary work, and carrying out other caring responsibilities. In order to develop a framework of the mobility of people as they age, we formulated a set of guiding principles that underpin this Evidence Review. These principles are drawn from current thinking in applied gerontology in the many differing fields that cover mobility issues and represent a shift from individual discipline-based silo thinking to person-centred thinking that attempts to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries

    Slip resistance of winter footwear on snow and ice measured using maximum achievable incline

    Protective footwear is necessary for preventing injurious slips and falls in winter conditions. Valid methods for assessing footwear slip resistance on winter surfaces are needed in order to evaluate footwear and outsole designs. The purpose of this study was to utilise a method of testing winter footwear that was ecologically valid in terms of involving actual human testers walking on realistic winter surfaces to produce objective measures of slip resistance. During the experiment, eight participants tested six styles of footwear on wet ice, on dry ice, and on dry ice after walking over soft snow. Slip resistance was measured by determining the maximum incline angles participants were able to walk up and down in each footwear-surface combination. The results indicated that testing on a variety of surfaces is necessary for establishing winter footwear performance and that standard mechanical bench tests for footwear slip resistance do not adequately reflect actual performance. Practitioner Summary: Existing standardised methods for measuring footwear slip resistance lack validation on winter surfaces. By determining the maximum inclines participants could walk up and down slopes of wet ice, dry ice, and ice with snow, in a range of footwear, an ecologically valid test for measuring winter footwear performance was established

    Visions for a walking and cycling focussed urban transport system

    Walking and cycling can make a considerable contribution to sustainable transport goals, building healthier and more sustainable communities and contributing to traffic and pollution reduction. There have been many national and local initiatives to promote walking and cycling, but without a long term vision and consistent strategy it is difficult to see how a significant change may be achieved. This paper presents three alternative visions for the role of walking and cycling in urban areas for the year 2030: each vision illustrates a ‘desirable’ walking- and cycling-oriented transport system against a different ‘exogenous social background’. These visions have been developed through a process of expert discussion and review and are intended to provide a stimulus for debate on the potential for and desirability of such alternative futures. Each is based on the UK and represents a substantial change to the current situation: in particular, each of the visions presents a view of a society where walking and cycling are considerably more important than is currently the case and where these modes cater for a much higher proportion of urban transport needs than at present. The visions show pictures of urban environments where dependence on motor vehicles has been reduced, in two of the visions to very low levels. The methodological approach for devising visions is informed by work on ‘utopian thinking’: a key concept underlying this approach is one of viewing the future in social constructivist terms (i.e. the future is what ‘we’, as a society, make it) rather than considering the future as something that can be ‘scientifically’ predicted by the extrapolation of current trends

    Developing an audit checklist to assess outdoor falls risk

    Falls by older people (aged 65+ years) are linked to disability and a decrease in mobility, presenting a challengeto active ageing. As such, older fallers represent a vulnerable road user group. Despite this, there is little researchinto the causes and prevention of outdoor falls. This paper develops an understanding of environmental factorsthat cause falls or fear of falling by using go-along interviews with recent fallers to explore how they navigate theoutdoor environment, and which aspects of it they perceive facilitate or hinder their ability to go outdoors and fearof falling. While there are a number of audit checklists that are focused on assessing the indoor environment forrisk or fear of falls, nothing exists for the outdoor environment. Many existing street audit tools are focusedon general environmental qualities and have not been designed with an older population in mind. This paperpresents a checklist that assesses aspects of the environment that are most likely to encourage or hinder those whoare at risk of falling outdoors, it is developed through accounting for the experiences and navigational strategies ofelderly individuals. The audit checklist can assist occupational therapists, urban planners, designers and managers inworking to reduce the occurrence of outdoor falls among this vulnerable user group

    Exposing the Contradictory Claims, Myths and Illusions of the “Secrets of Business Success and Company Longevity†Genre

    Over the last three decades, several management consultants, academics and business practitioners have laid claim to identifying “the secrets†of business success and company longevity. However, a systematic analysis of 24 studies in this genre revealed fundamental disagreements over the elements these authors claim are the primary drivers of business performance and longevity, and demonstrates that they share eight methodological and analytical flaws. Furthermore, many of the claims they made about “the secrets†of business success have not stood the test of time. The paper explains why business practitioners will find little in these studies to help their companies become more successful now and in the future, and also speculates why several of these studies became international best-sellers during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. It concludes by suggesting some new avenues for future research in this domain, and highlights the practical implications of these findings for business practitioners

    Disabled people's experiences in the work place environment in England

    Purpose – The aim of this paper is to report on a study undertaken into disabled people's experience of the built environment when attempting to access and stay in employment. Design/methodology/approach – Narratives were collected using semi-structured interviews with 38 disabled people, all of whom had experience of paid and unpaid work. Findings – Analysis of the interview narratives shows that disabled people experience a range of barriers and enablers in the built environment both to gaining employment and to staying in employment, and an accessible environment contributes to a successful employment experience. Research limitations/implications – This is a small exploratory study of disabled people's experience of the workplace built environment. Future research could focus in more detail on whether specific design features reduce the requirement for reasonable adjustments. Practical implications – The implications are that disabled people are experiencing discrimination when working environments present barriers and reasonable adjustments, as required by the UK Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and 2005, are not made. Originality/value – This is exploratory research and provides an insight into the experience of disabled people of the physical workplace environment, presenting examples of good and poor practice

    Increasing Independence for Older People through Good Street Design

    The design and maintenance of the physical external environment facilitate people's ability to get out and about. In particular, effective design of the neighbourhood street can support older people's independence (such as being able to go shopping) and increase social interaction and community engagement, reducing reliance on care in the home. Interviews were conducted with 200 people aged 65+ to assess their preferences for a range of street attributes. A structured questionnaire was used, in conjunction with photo elicitation. The analysis identified the components of a street that make a person feel safe and influence their decision to go out, such as adequate seating and smooth pavements. The results found that if these components are absent, some older people limit outdoor activity for a range of reasons. The implications are that older people's quality of life can be significantly improved by good street design
