Political events resulting from the 5th October 1910 military coup put Portugal at the center of the political debate and the international journalistic agenda. The repercussions spread all over the Europe and provoked contradictory reactions. This article analyzes the impact of the First Portuguese Republic implantation on the Italian press and how it was reported by the editorial discourse, with special focus in the discursive framing conferred by the current opinion that opposed the republican political order

Quantifying Equivocation for Finite Blocklength Wiretap Codes

This paper presents a new technique for providing the analysis and comparison of wiretap codes in the small blocklength regime over the binary erasure wiretap channel. A major result is the development of Monte Carlo strategies for quantifying a code's equivocation, which mirrors techniques used to analyze normal error correcting codes. For this paper, we limit our analysis to coset-based wiretap codes, and make several comparisons of different code families at small and medium blocklengths. Our results indicate that there are security advantages to using specific codes when using small to medium blocklengths.Comment: Submitted to ICC 201

A speculative computation approach for conflict styles assessment with incomplete information

Thispaperanalysesawaytocopewithincompleteinformation, namely information regarding the conflict style used by parties. This analysis is important because it enables us to develop a more accurate and informed conflict style classification method to promote better strategies. To develop this proposal, an experiment using a combination of Bayesian Networks with Speculative Computation is depicted. Thus, in this work, was firstly identified and applied a set of methods for classifying conflict styles with incomplete information; secondly, the approach was validating opposing data collected from a web-based negotiationgame.Fromtheexperimentoutcomes, wecanconcludedthatitispossibleto copewithincompleteinformationbyproducingvalidconflictstyledefaultvalues and, particularly, to anticipate competing postures through the dynamic generation of recommendations for a conflict manager. The findings suggest that this approach is suitable for handling incomplete information in this context and can be applied in a viable and feasible way. This work has been supported by COMPETE:POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) within the Project Scope UID/CEC/00319/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Modelling stress recognition in conflict resolution scenarios

    Get PDF
The current trend in Online Dispute Resolution focuses mostly on the development of technological tools that allow parties to solve conflicts through telecommunication means. However, this tendency leaves aside key issues, namely the context information that was previously available in traditional Alternative Dispute Resolution processes. The main weakness of this approach is that conflict resolution may become focused solely on objective issues. In order to overcome this inconvenience, we move forward to incorporate context and behavioural information in an Online Dispute Resolution platform. In particular, we consider the estimation of the level of stress and the prediction of the stress state evolution. As a result, the conflict resolution platform or the mediator may predict to what extent a party is affected by a particular matter, allowing one to adapt the conflict resolution strategy to a specific scenario in real time

Diabetes literacy among higher education students

Literacy in diabetes appears to be one of the key tools to combat the increasing prevalence of this chronic disease that has grown exponentially over the years and globally at national level. This study aimed to evaluate the level of literacy in diabetes among students and provide guidelines for proposing an intervention project among this community. The specific objectives were: validate the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ); and relate the levels of knowledge about diabetes with the socio-demographic and clinical variables. The sample comprises 432 higher education students who replied to the questionnaire in the period between February 15 and March 18, 2016. It was found that the DKQ (Sousa, 2003) that evaluates the knowledge of people about diabetes and its treatment seems to be acceptable for the general population and the two-dimensional model obtained from the confirmatory factor analysis revealed good levels of adjustment (CMIN/ DF=1.645, CFI=0.983, NFI=0.959, TLI=0.979, PCFI=0.803, RMSEA=0.039). The results showed a low level of literacy about diabetes and that there is a need for investment in community education projects to increase literacy about diabetes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
