Introduction: In the context of liposculpture, cervicofacial liposuction involves the application of negative pressure through a hollow cannula in the subcutaneous plane to gently avulse fat cells and accurately sculpt unwanted fat deposits on the face and neck. Furthermore, lipo contouring provides a versatile tool in the facial surgeon's arsenal to achieve the desired facial profile. In 2020, approximately 15.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States alone. Objective: A systematic review was carried out on the main clinical results, presenting studies on the risk of bias, and the advances in facial and cervical liposculpture as an important aesthetic tool for the dental surgeon. Methods: The rules of the Systematic Review-PRISMA Platform were followed. The search was carried out from November 2021 to February 2022 in Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases. Results: 64 articles were found involving liposculpture. A total of 32 articles were fully evaluated and 14 were included and developed in the present study. Considering the Cochrane tool for risk of bias, the overall assessment did not result in significant risk of bias studies. The Funnel Plot showed symmetrical behavior. Twenty-five studies did not meet the GRADE. Most patients who were involved in the studies showed improvements in facial augmentation and contouring. In patients with loss of facial volume, high-density fat transfer with the facial injection of SVF-gel resulted in significantly higher improvement scores and better patient satisfaction. Conclusion: According to the main clinical studies selected in the present study, cervicofacial liposculpture proved to be safe and effective. In patients with loss of facial volume, high-density fat transfer with a facial injection of SVF-gel resulted in significantly higher improvement scores and better patient satisfaction. Still, the results of the studies showed that the level of self-confidence and mental health-related quality of life can be significantly improved after facial lipofilling treatment

Influence of the dental topical application of a nisin-biogel in the oral microbiome of dogs: a pilot study

Research Areas: Science & Technology - Other TopicsPeriodontal disease (PD) is one of the most widespread inflammatory diseases in dogs. This disease is initiated by a polymicrobial biofilm in the teeth surface (dental plaque), leading to a local inflammatory response, with gingivitis and/or several degrees of periodontitis. For instance, the prevention of bacterial dental plaque formation and its removal are essential steps in PD control. Recent research revealed that the antimicrobial peptide nisin incorporated in the delivery system guar gum (biogel) can inhibit and eradicate bacteria from canine dental plaque, being a promising compound for prevention of PD onset in dogs. However, no information is available regarding its effect on the dog's oral microbiome. In this pilot study, the influence of the nisin-biogel on the diversity of canine oral microbiome was evaluated using next generation sequencing (NGS), aiming to access the viability of nisin-biogel to be used in long-term experiment in dogs. Composite toothbrushing samples of the supragingival plaque from two dogs were collected at three timepoints: T1-before any application of the nisin-biogel to the animals' teeth surface; T2-one hour after one application of the nisin-biogel; and T3-one hour after a total of three applications of the nisin-biogel, each 48 hours. After that, microbial profiling was performed by NGS of the V3V4 16s rRNA region. After only one application of the nisin-biogel to the oral cavity of dogs, a statistically significant reduction in microbial diversity was observed (T2) as well as a reduction of some bacterial species potentially related with distinct stages of PD, when compared with samples collected before any application (T1). However, after a total of three nisin-biogel applications (T3), a recovery of the microbial diversity was detected. In conclusion, the nisin-biogel may influence the canine oral microbiome. A reduction in some bacterial species potentially related with distinct stages of PD was observed. This pilot study will help to design a controlled in vivo clinical trial to evaluate nisin-biogel effect on dental plaque progression and canine periodontal indices evolution in a long-term application period.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fricke and polymer gel 2D dosimetry validation using Monte Carlo simulation

Complexity in modern radiotherapy treatments demands advanced dosimetry systems for quality control. These systems must have several characteristics, such as high spatial resolution, tissue equivalence, three-dimensional resolution, and dose-integrating capabilities. In this scenario, gel dosimetry has proved to be a very promising option for quality assurance. In this study, the feasibility of Fricke and polymer gel dosimeters suitably shaped in form of thin layers and optically analyzed by visible light transmission imaging has been investigated for quality assurance in external radiotherapy. Dosimeter irradiation was carried out with a 6-MV photon beam (CLINAC 600C). The analysis of the irradiated dosimeters was done using two-dimensional optical transmission images. These dosimeters were compared with a treatment plan system using Monte Carlo simulations as a reference by means of a gamma test with parameters of 1 mm and 2%. Results show very good agreement between the different dosimetric systems: in the worst-case scenario, 98% of the analyzed points meet the test quality requirements. Therefore, gel dosimetry may be considered as a potential tool for the validation of other dosimetric systems.Fil: Vedelago, José Alberto. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Quantum correlations between bright pump, signal, and idler beams produced by an optical parametric oscillator, all with different frequencies, are experimentally demonstrated. We show that the degree of entanglement between signal and idler fields is improved by using information of pump fluctuations. This is the first observation of three-color optical quantum correlations.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
