Bayesian Psychiatry and the Social Focus of Delusions
A large and growing body of research in computational psychiatry draws on Bayesian modelling to illuminate the dysfunctions and aberrations that underlie psychiatric disorders. After identifying the chief attractions of this research programme, we argue that its typical focus on abstract, domain-general inferential processes is likely to obscure many of the distinctive ways in which the human mind can break down and malfunction. We illustrate this by appeal to psychosis and the social phenomenology of delusions
Maine Monthly Overdose Report for April 2023
This report documents suspected and confirmed fatal and nonfatal drug overdoses in Maine during April 2023 as well as for the period January 2022–April 2023. During April 2023, the proportion of fatal overdoses averaged 7.3% of total overdoses. Monthly proportions of 2023 fatalities have fluctuated from a low of 4.5% in March to a high of 7.3% in April. During the period January–April 2023, fatal overdoses comprised 6.1% of all overdoses, slightly lower than the 6.8% for 2022
Asteroseismology, standard candles and the Hubble Constant: what is the role of asteroseismology in the era of precision cosmology?
Classical Cepheids form one of the foundations of modern cosmology and the
extragalactic distance scale, however, cosmic microwave background observations
measure cosmological parameters and indirectly the Hubble Constant, H0, to
unparalleled precision. The coming decade will provide opportunities to measure
H0 to 2% uncertainty thanks to the GAIA satellite, JWST, ELTs and other
telescopes using Cepheids and other standard candles. In this work, we discuss
the upcoming role for variable stars and asteroseismology in calibrating the
distance scale and measuring H0 and what problems exist in understanding these
stars that will feedback on these measurements.Comment: 8 pages, summary of splinter session at IAU Symposium 301, Precision
