Bargaining behavior, demographics and nationality: a reconsideration of the experimental evidence
Bargaining behavior appears to vary across nations. What drives these apparent differences? We reconsider the evidence provided by previous experiments, and undertake some new experiments that expand the controls for demographics. We show that inferences about country effects are sensitive to the way in which the data are analyzed and the controls that are incorporated. Separating out differences in initial behavior versus trend shows significant differences in both. Adding interaction effects between countries, gender, and ethnic background shows that cultural differences are more complex than the factors captured by either nationality or gender alone. Some subgroups behave in ways which are clearly closer to the subgame perfect equilibrium prediction than others.
Engineering soil organic matter quality: Biodiesel Co-Product (BCP) stimulates exudation of nitrogenous microbial biopolymers
Biodiesel Co-Product (BCP) is a complex organic material formed during the transesterification of lipids. We investigated the effect of BCP on the extracellular microbial matrix or ‘extracellular polymeric substance’ (EPS) in soil which is suspected to be a highly influential fraction of soil organic matter (SOM). It was hypothesised that more N would be transferred to EPS in soil given BCP compared to soil given glycerol. An arable soil was amended with BCP produced from either 1) waste vegetable oils or 2) pure oilseed rape oil, and compared with soil amended with 99% pure glycerol; all were provided with 15N labelled KNO3. We compared transfer of microbially assimilated 15N into the extracellular amino acid pool, and measured concomitant production of exopolysaccharide. Following incubation, the 15N enrichment of total hydrolysable amino acids (THAAs) indicated that intracellular anabolic products had incorporated the labelled N primarily as glutamine and glutamate. A greater proportion of the amino acids in EPS were found to contain 15N than those in the THAA pool, indicating that the increase in EPS was comprised of bioproducts synthesised de novo. Moreover, BCP had increased the EPS production efficiency of the soil microbial community (μg EPS per unit ATP) up to approximately double that of glycerol, and caused transfer of 21% more 15N from soil solution into EPS-amino acids. Given the suspected value of EPS in agricultural soils, the use of BCP to stimulate exudation is an interesting tool to consider in the theme of delivering sustainable intensification
Municipal investment in off-road trails and changes in bicycle commuting in Minneapolis, Minnesota over 10 years: a longitudinal repeated cross-sectional study
Abstract Background We studied the effect of key development and expansion of an off-road multipurpose trail system in Minneapolis, Minnesota between 2000 and 2007 to understand whether infrastructure investments are associated with increases in commuting by bicycle. Methods We used repeated measures regression on tract-level (N = 116 tracts) data to examine changes in bicycle commuting between 2000 and 2008–2012. We investigated: 1) trail proximity measured as distance from the trail system and 2) trail potential use measured as the proportion of commuting trips to destinations that might traverse the trail system. All analyses (performed 2015–2016) adjusted for tract-level sociodemographic covariates and contemporaneous cycling infrastructure changes (e.g., bicycle lanes). Results Tracts that were both closer to the new trail system and had a higher proportion of trips to destinations across the trail system experienced greater 10-year increases in commuting by bicycle. Conclusions Proximity to off-road infrastructure and travel patterns are relevant to increased bicycle commuting, an important contributor to overall physical activity. Municipal investment in bicycle facilities, especially off-road trails that connect a city’s population and its employment centers, is likely to lead to increases in commuting by bicycle
Lorentzian and signature changing branes
General hypersurface layers are considered in order to describe brane-worlds
and shell cosmologies. No restriction is placed on the causal character of the
hypersurface which may thus have internal changes of signature. Strengthening
the results in our previous letter [1], we confirm that a good, regular and
consistent description of signature change is achieved in these brane/shells
scenarios, while keeping the hypersurface and the bulk completely regular. Our
formalism allows for a unified description of the traditional timelike
branes/shells together with the signature-changing, or pure null, ones. This
allows for a detailed comparison of the results in both situations. An
application to the case of hypersurface layers in static bulks is presented,
leading to the general Robertson-Walker geometry on the layer --with a possible
signature change. Explicit examples on anti de Sitter bulks are then studied.
The permitted behaviours in different settings (-mirror branes,
asymmetric shells, signature-changing branes) are analysed in detail. We show
in particular that (i) in asymmetric shells there is an upper bound for the
energy density, and (ii) that the energy density within the brane vanishes when
approaching a change of signature. The description of a signature change as a
`singularity' seen from within the brane is considered. We also find new
relations between the fundamental constants in the brane/shell, its tension,
and the cosmological and gravitational constants of the bulk, independently of
the existence or not of a change of signature.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figure
Analysis of Neptune's 2017 Bright Equatorial Storm
We report the discovery of a large (8500 km diameter) infrared-bright
storm at Neptune's equator in June 2017. We tracked the storm over a period of
7 months with high-cadence infrared snapshot imaging, carried out on 14 nights
at the 10 meter Keck II telescope and 17 nights at the Shane 120 inch reflector
at Lick Observatory. The cloud feature was larger and more persistent than any
equatorial clouds seen before on Neptune, remaining intermittently active from
at least 10 June to 31 December 2017. Our Keck and Lick observations were
augmented by very high-cadence images from the amateur community, which
permitted the determination of accurate drift rates for the cloud feature. Its
zonal drift speed was variable from 10 June to at least 25 July, but remained a
constant m s from 30 September until at least 15
November. The pressure of the cloud top was determined from radiative transfer
calculations to be 0.3-0.6 bar; this value remained constant over the course of
the observations. Multiple cloud break-up events, in which a bright cloud band
wrapped around Neptune's equator, were observed over the course of our
observations. No "dark spot" vortices were seen near the equator in HST imaging
on 6 and 7 October. The size and pressure of the storm are consistent with
moist convection or a planetary-scale wave as the energy source of convective
upwelling, but more modeling is required to determine the driver of this
equatorial disturbance as well as the triggers for and dynamics of the observed

(HIIT-The Track) High-Intensity Interval Training for People with Parkinson's Disease: Individual Response Patterns of (Non-)Motor Symptoms and Blood-Based Biomarkers-A Crossover Single-Case Experimental Design.
INTRODUCTION
Physical exercise is receiving increasing interest as an augmentative non-pharmacological intervention in Parkinson's disease (PD). This pilot study primarily aimed to quantify individual response patterns of motor symptoms to alternating exercise modalities, along with non-motor functioning and blood biomarkers of neuroplasticity and neurodegeneration.
MATERIALS & METHODS
People with PD performed high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and continuous aerobic exercise (CAE) using a crossover single-case experimental design. A repeated assessment of outcome measures was conducted. The trajectories of outcome measures were visualized in time series plots and interpreted relative to the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and smallest detectable change (SDC) or as a change in the positive or negative direction using trend lines.
RESULTS
Data of three participants were analyzed and engaging in physical exercise seemed beneficial for reducing motor symptoms. Participant 1 demonstrated improvement in motor function, independent of exercise modality; while for participant 2, such a clinically relevant (positive) change in motor function was only observed in response to CAE. Participant 3 showed improved motor function after HIIT, but no comparison could be made with CAE because of drop-out. Heterogeneous responses on secondary outcome measures were found, not only between exercise modalities but also among participants.
CONCLUSION
Though this study underpins the positive impact of physical exercise in the management of PD, large variability in individual response patterns to the interventions among participants makes it difficult to identify clear exercise-induced adaptations in functioning and blood biomarkers. Further research is needed to overcome methodological challenges in measuring individual response patterns
Lipid-DNAs as Solubilizers of mTHPC
Hydrophobic drug candidates require innovative
formulation agents. We designed and synthesized lipidDNA polymers containing varying numbers of hydrophobic alkyl chains. The hydrophobicity of these amphiphiles
is easily tunable by introducing a defined number of alkyl
chain-modified nucleotides during standard solid-phase
synthesis of DNA using an automated DNA synthesizer.
We observed that the resulting self-assembled micelles
solubilize the poorly water-soluble drug, meta-tetra-hydroxyphenyl-chlorin (mTHPC) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) with high loading concentrations and loading
capacities. A cell viability study showed that mTHPCloaded micelles exhibit good biocompatibility without irradiation, and high PDT efficacy upon irradiation. LipidDNAs provide a novel class of drug-delivery vehicle, and
hybridization of DNA offers a potentially facile route for
further functionalization of the drug-delivery system with,
for instance, targeting or imaging moieties
W=0 Pairing in Carbon Nanotubes away from Half Filling
We use the Hubbard Hamiltonian on the honeycomb lattice to represent the
valence bands of carbon single-wall nanotubes. A detailed symmetry
analysis shows that the model allows W=0 pairs which we define as two-body
singlet eigenstates of with vanishing on-site repulsion. By means of a
non-perturbative canonical transformation we calculate the effective
interaction between the electrons of a W=0 pair added to the interacting ground
state. We show that the dressed W=0 pair is a bound state for resonable
parameter values away from half filling. Exact diagonalization results for the
(1,1) nanotube confirm the expectations. For nanotubes of length ,
the binding energy of the pair depends strongly on the filling and decreases
towards a small but nonzero value as . We observe the existence
of an optimal doping when the number of electrons per C atom is in the range
1.21.3, and the binding energy is of the order of 0.1 1 meV.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
Continuous-flow in-line solvent-swap crystallization of vitamin D(3)
A continuous tandem in-line evaporation–crystallization is presented. The process includes an in-line solvent-swap step, suitable to be coupled to a capillary based cooler. As a proof of concept, this setup is tested in a direct in-line acetonitrile mediated crystallization of Vitamin D₃. This configuration is suitable to be coupled to a new end-to-end continuous microflow synthesis of Vitamin D₃. By this procedure, vitamin particles can be crystallized in continuous flow and isolated using an in-line continuous filtration step. In one run in just 1 min of cooling time, ∼50% (w/w) crystals of Vitamin D₃ are directly obtained.
