“Modernity” is outdated. Bring on the new modern!
MSc Anthropology and Development student, Marco Maragno, tells us why he thinks the notion of “modernity” is outdated
The Dark Side(-Channel) of Mobile Devices: A Survey on Network Traffic Analysis
In recent years, mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets) have met an
increasing commercial success and have become a fundamental element of the
everyday life for billions of people all around the world. Mobile devices are
used not only for traditional communication activities (e.g., voice calls and
messages) but also for more advanced tasks made possible by an enormous amount
of multi-purpose applications (e.g., finance, gaming, and shopping). As a
result, those devices generate a significant network traffic (a consistent part
of the overall Internet traffic). For this reason, the research community has
been investigating security and privacy issues that are related to the network
traffic generated by mobile devices, which could be analyzed to obtain
information useful for a variety of goals (ranging from device security and
network optimization, to fine-grained user profiling).
In this paper, we review the works that contributed to the state of the art
of network traffic analysis targeting mobile devices. In particular, we present
a systematic classification of the works in the literature according to three
criteria: (i) the goal of the analysis; (ii) the point where the network
traffic is captured; and (iii) the targeted mobile platforms. In this survey,
we consider points of capturing such as Wi-Fi Access Points, software
simulation, and inside real mobile devices or emulators. For the surveyed
works, we review and compare analysis techniques, validation methods, and
achieved results. We also discuss possible countermeasures, challenges and
possible directions for future research on mobile traffic analysis and other
emerging domains (e.g., Internet of Things). We believe our survey will be a
reference work for researchers and practitioners in this research field.Comment: 55 page
Optimization with machine learning-based modeling: an application to humanitarian food aid
In this thesis, we propose a machine learning-based optimization methodology to build (part of) optimization models with a data-driven approach. This approach is useful whenever we have to model one or more relations between the decisions and their impact on the system. This kind of relationship can be challenging to model manually, and so machine learning is used to learn it through the use of data.
We demonstrate the potential of this method through a case study in which a predictive model is used to approximate the palatability scoring function in a typical diet problem formulation. First, the performance of this approach is analyzed by embedding a Linear Regression model and then by embedding a Fully Connected Neural Network
Towards a climate proof redevelopment of Naples waterfront
This work proposes a reflection on one of the emerging themes of spatial planning: the redevelopment of waterfronts, outlining, in its approach, the need for extreme sensibility to the impacts of climate change.
The analysis introduces a temporal reconstruction of the practices and principles that have oriented the city and its relationship with water, as well as the management in government activities of the territory, related with this relationship.
Starting from the case study represented by the waterfront of Naples, the work aims to define an exportable and replicable approach. The final goal is to implement a requalification able to re-updating the relationship between waterfront and territory and, at the same time, to consider the issue of climate change in relation to the impacts produced in these areas. This new approach can generate redevelopment and become an opportunity to regain a lost relationship between urban fabric and sea. Furthermore it\u2019s an opportunity for an overall economic and managerial reorganization of the urban- metropolitan areas.
The work, aware of the complexity of the theme, present the case of Naples as emblematic of the contemporary challenge for innovative planning based on an integrated and climate proof approach, able to combine synergistically the reality of the city, the coast and the sea in a framework of territorial sustainability and climate resilience

Optimization with Constraint Learning: A Framework and Survey
Many real-life optimization problems frequently contain one or more
constraints or objectives for which there are no explicit formulas. If data is
however available, these data can be used to learn the constraints. The
benefits of this approach are clearly seen, however there is a need for this
process to be carried out in a structured manner. This paper therefore provides
a framework for Optimization with Constraint Learning (OCL) which we believe
will help to formalize and direct the process of learning constraints from
data. This framework includes the following steps: (i) setup of the conceptual
optimization model, (ii) data gathering and preprocessing, (iii) selection and
training of predictive models, (iv) resolution of the optimization model, and
(v) verification and improvement of the optimization model. We then review the
recent OCL literature in light of this framework, and highlight current trends,
as well as areas for future research
