Assessment of anogenital distance as a diagnostic tool in polycystic ovary syndrome

Case-control study conducted between September 2014 and May 2016 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Clinical Hospital 'Virgen de la Arrixaca' in the Murcia region (south-eastern Spain). One hundred and twenty-six cases of PCOS and 159 controls without PCOS were included. AGD measurements were taken from the anterior clitoral surface to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAC), and from the posterior fourchette to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAF). Parametric and non-parametric tests and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess associations between AGD and the presence of PCOS and its phenotypes. AGDAC, but not AGDAF, was associated with PCOS and all its phenotypes (P-values < 0.001 to 0.048). The highest area under the curve (0.62; 95% confidence interval 0.55 to 0.71) was obtained for all PCOS with AGDAC with a sensitivity and specificity of 50.0% and 73.0%, and positive and negative predictive value of 59.0% and 64.4%, respectively. AGDAC could moderately discriminate the presence of PCOS and may be a useful clinical tool
Pharmacological Blockade of NLRP3 Inflammasome/IL1β-Positive Loop Mitigates Endothelial Cell Senescence and Dysfunction
The clinical relevance of IL-1β in chronic inflammation underlying atherosclerosis has been reinforced by recent evidence associating pharmacological inhibition of the cytokine with lower cardiovascular risk. Previously, we have demonstrated a direct involvement of IL-1β in endothelial senescence. Therefore, this can be a key mechanism contributing to the sterile inflammatory milieu associated with aging, termed inflammaging. In the present study, we have evaluated whether a positive feedback of IL-1β in the NLRP3 inflammasome via NF-κB could promote human endothelial senescence in vitro and murine endothelial dysfunction in vivo. Our results indicate that the NLRP3 inflammasome is pivotal in mediating the detrimental effects of IL-1β, showing that auto-activation is a crucial feature boosting endothelial cell senescence in vitro, which is paralleled by vascular dysfunction in vivo. Hence, the inhibitor of NLRP3 inflammasome assembly, MCC 950, was able to disrupt the aforementioned positive loop, thus alleviating inflammation, cell senescence and vascular dysfunction. Besides, we explored alternative NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitory agents such as the RAS heptapeptide Ang-(1-7) and the anti-aging protein klotho, both of which demonstrated protective effects in vitro and in vivo. Measurement of the production cross section of prompt J/ψ mesons in association with a W ± boson in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Aad, G. et al.The process pp → W ± J/ψ provides a powerful probe of the production mechanism of charmonium in hadronic collisions, and is also sensitive to multiple parton interactions in the colliding protons. Using the 2011 ATLAS dataset of 4.5 fb−1 of s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC, the first observation is made of the production of W ± + prompt J/ψ events in hadronic collisions, using W ± → μν μ and J/ψ → μ + μ −. A yield of 27.4+7.5−6.5 W ± + prompt J/ψ events is observed, with a statistical significance of 5.1σ. Search for WZ resonances in the fully leptonic channel using pp collisions at s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for resonant WZ production in the ℓνℓ'ℓ' (ℓ,ℓ'=e,μ) decay channel using 20.3 fb-1 of s=8TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at LHC is presented. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and upper limits on the production cross sections of WZ resonances from an extended gauge model W' and from a simplified model of heavy vector triplets are derived. A corresponding observed (expected) lower mass limit of 1.52 (1.49) TeV is derived for the W' at the 95% confidence level.Peer Reviewe
Measurement of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The dynamics of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb. Cross sections are measured as functions of a variety of observables, including angular correlations and invariant masses of the objects in the final state, γ + jet + jet. Measurements are also performed in phase-space regions enriched in each of the two underlying physical mechanisms, namely direct and fragmentation processes. The measurements cover the range of photon (jet) transverse momenta from 150 GeV (100 GeV) to 2 TeV. The tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Sherpa are compared with the measurements. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions describe the data adequately in shape and normalisation except for regions of phase space such as those with high values of the invariant mass or rapidity separation of the two jets, where the predictions overestimate the data. DYRK1A genetic variants are not linked to Alzheimer's disease in a Spanish case-control cohort
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) has been implicated in the abnormal hyperphosphorylation of tau in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, and the development of neurofibrillary tangles, we examined the contribution of this gene to the susceptibility for AD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We examined genetic variations of DYRK1A by genotyping haplotype tagging SNPs (htSNPs) (rs11701483, rs2835740, rs1137600, rs2835761, rs2835762, rs2154545 and rs8132976) in a group of 634 Spanish AD cases and 733 controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no differences in the genotypic, allelic or haplotypic distributions between cases and controls in the overall analysis or after stratification by APOE ε4 allele.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our negative findings in the Spanish population argue against the hypothesis that DYRK1A genetic variations are causally related to AD risk. Still, additional studies using different sets of patients and control subjects deserve further attention, since supporting evidence for association between DYRK1A gene and AD risk in the Japanese population exists.</p

The charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The W boson is reconstructed from the decay to either an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event. The charmed mesons reconstructed are D + → K - π + π + and D * + → D 0 π + → ( K - π + ) π + and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducial regions where p T ( e , μ ) > 30 GeV , | η ( e , μ ) | 8 GeV , and | η ( D ( * ) ) | < 2.2 . The integrated and normalized differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. The measured total fiducial cross sections are σ fid OS - SS ( W - + D + ) = 50.2 ± 0.2 ( stat ) - 2.3 + 2.4 ( syst ) pb , σ fid OS - SS ( W + + D - ) = 48.5 ± 0.2 ( stat ) - 2.2 + 2.3 ( syst ) pb , σ fid OS - SS ( W - + D * + ) = 51.1 ± 0.4 ( stat ) - 1.8 + 1.9 ( syst ) pb , and σ fid OS - SS ( W + + D * - ) = 50.0 ± 0.4 ( stat ) - 1.8 + 1.9 ( syst ) pb . Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, the ratio of charm to anticharm production cross sections is studied to probe the s - s ¯ quark asymmetry. The ratio is found to be R c ± = 0.971 ± 0.006 ( stat ) ± 0.011 ( syst ) . The ratio and cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with parton distribution function sets that have a symmetric s - s ¯ sea, indicating that any s - s ¯ asymmetry in the Bjorken- x region relevant for this measurement is small
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 8 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
Aad, G. et al.A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb−1 of s√ = 8 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with the Standard Model expectations and limits are set in R-parity-conserving phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Models and in simplified supersymmetric models, significantly extending previous results. Search in diphoton and dielectron final states for displaced production of Higgs or Z bosons with the ATLAS detector in Formula Presented pp collisions
A search is presented for displaced production of Higgs bosons or Z bosons, originating from the decay of a neutral long-lived particle (LLP) and reconstructed in the decay modes H → γ γ and Z → e e . The analysis uses the full Run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at an energy of s = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb - 1 . Exploiting the capabilities of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter to precisely measure the arrival times and trajectories of electromagnetic objects, the analysis searches for the signature of pairs of photons or electrons which arise from a common displaced vertex and which arrive after some delay at the calorimeter. The results are interpreted in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model with pair-produced Higgsinos that decay to LLPs, and each LLP subsequently decays into either a Higgs boson or a Z boson. The final state includes at least two particles that escape direct detection, giving rise to missing transverse momentum. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation. The results are used to set upper limits on the cross section for Higgsino pair production, up to a χ ˜ 1 0 mass of 369 (704) GeV for decays with 100% branching ratio of χ ˜ 1 0 to Higgs ( Z ) bosons for a χ ˜ 1 0 lifetime of 2 ns. A model-independent limit is also set on the production of pairs of photons or electrons with a significant delay in arrival at the calorimeter
