    A simple method for detection of phosgene based on the infiltration of a colorimetric probe in nanostructure TiO2 films

    A new sensor for detection of phosgene has been developed by incorporating an indicator to nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films.Nanocrystalline films were used to detect phosgene by measuring the variation of their absorbance spectra. In presence of phosgene, a new band at ~450 nm appears in the spectrum. The response intensity (absorbance at 450 nm) has been found to be concentration-dependent.Currently we are working in the detection limits and others parameters of his sensor.Motivation: The motivation in this work is because it had been a very lethal gas in World War II and is currently being used in numerous production processes as frequent as the manufacture of pesticides, dyes or herbicides. It is for this reason that an early detection is required since the lethality of said gas is very high.Methods: The method used is screen printing. In this method a reagent has been deposited in a nanocrystalline film which is then impregnated with the reagent solution and subsequently exposed to the analyte.Results: The results obtained are very satisfactory. The tolerance limit for humans is very significantly lowered.Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, the sensor described, is one of the best optical and solid sensors in phosgene´s detection, reaching concentrations below the parts per million

    The Blockade of Tumoral IL1β-Mediated Signaling in Normal Colonic Fibroblasts Sensitizes Tumor Cells to Chemotherapy and Prevents Inflammatory CAF Activation

    Heterotypic interactions between newly transformed cells and normal surrounding cells define tumor's fate in incipient carcinomas. Once homeostasis has been lost, normal resident fibroblasts become carcinoma-associated fibroblasts, conferring protumorogenic properties on these normal cells. Here we describe the IL1 beta-mediated interplay between cancer cells and normal colonic myofibroblasts (NCFs), which bestows differential sensitivity to cytotoxic drugs on tumor cells. We used NCFs, their conditioned media (CM), and cocultures with tumor cells to characterize the IL1 beta-mediated crosstalk between both cell types. We silenced IL1 beta in tumor cells to demonstrate that such cells do not exert an influence on NCFs inflammatory phenotype. Our results shows that IL1 beta is overexpressed in cocultured tumor cells. IL1 beta enables paracrine signaling in myofibroblasts, converting them into inflammatory-CAFs (iCAF). IL1 beta-stimulated-NCF-CM induces migration and differential sensitivity to oxaliplatin in colorectal tumor cells. Such chemoprotective effect has not been evidenced for TGF beta 1-driven NCFs. IL1 beta induces the loss of a myofibroblastic phenotype in NCFs and acquisition of iCAF traits. In conclusion, IL1 beta-secreted by cancer cells modify surrounding normal fibroblasts to confer protumorogenic features on them, particularly tolerance to cytotoxic drugs. The use of IL1 beta-blocking agents might help to avoid the iCAF traits acquisition and consequently to counteract the protumorogenic actions these cells. Keyword

    Modelación física y numérica del lavado de sedimentos en embalses

    Este trabajo tiene como objeto evaluar la capacidad de los modelos hidrodinámicos existentes para la simulación del lavado de sedimentos en embalses mediante flushing. Se han realizado modelos numéricos con tres programas informáticos HEC-RAS, IBER, y FLOW-3D para reproducir un ensayo de flushing realizado a escala de laboratorio. Comparativamente, los resultados obtenidos con el modelo FLOW-3D son los que más se aproximan a las mediciones del laboratorio, mientras que los resultados obtenidos con HEC-RAS e IBER presentan diferencias con dichas mediciones. En el caso de HEC-RAS se observa una sobrestimación del transporte de fondo y de la erosión, aunque los resultados presentan tendencias similares a las del ensayo de referencia. En el caso de IBER, se observa una subestimación del transporte de fondo y la erosión con tendencias distintas a las mediciones de laboratorio.     Agentes y lazos sociales: la experiencia de volverse comunidad

    En la colonia Lomas de Polanco, al sur de la ciudad de Guadalajara, México, entre 1970 y 1990 se generó un movimiento ciudadano, enraizado en las Comunidades Eclesiales de Base y la educación popular, que emprendió una lucha exitosa para conseguir los servicios de infraestructura urbana ante las promesas incumplidas de autoridades y fraccionadores. La confluencia de actores, individuales y colectivos, de distintos contextos, contribuyeron a la reconstitución del tejido social y la creación de los lazos que dieron sentido de comunidad a los colonos y al desarrollo de su capacidad de agencia para la trasformación positiva de su entorno y de su vida. Esta experiencia se recupera en esta obra, a partir de una serie de entrevistas con los actores del movimiento, mediante un análisis retrospectivo y desde varias perspectivas teóricas.     AIoTES: Setting the principles for semantic interoperable and modern IoT-enabled reference architecture for Active and Healthy Ageing ecosystems

    [EN] The average life expectancy of the world's population is increasing and the healthcare systems sooner than later will be compromised by its reduced capacity and its highly economic cost; in addition, the age distribution of the population is leading towards the older spectrum. This trend will lead to immeasurable and unexpected economic problems and social changes. In order to face up this challenge and complex economic and social problem, it is necessary to rely on the appropriate digital tools and technological infrastructures for ensuring that the elderly are properly cared in their everyday living environments and they can live independently for longer. This article presents ACTIVAGE IoT Ecosystem Suite (AIoTES), a concrete reference architecture and its implementation process that addresses these issues and that was designed within the first European Large Scale Pilot, ACTIVAGE, a H2020 funded project by the European Commission with the objective of creating sustainable ecosystems for Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA) based on Internet of Things and big data technologies. AIoTES offers platform level semantic interoperability, with security and privacy, as well as Big Data and Ecosystem tools. AIoTES enables and promotes the creation, exchange and adoption of crossplatform services and applications for AHA. The number of existing AHA services and solutions are quite large, especially when state-of-the-art technology is introduced, however a concrete architecture such as AIoTES gains more importance and relevance by providing a vision for establishing a complete ecosystem, that looks for supporting a larger variety of AHA services, rather than claiming to be a unique solution for all the AHA domain problems. AIoTES has been successfully validated by testing all of its components, individually, integrated, and in real-world environments with 4345 direct users. Each validation is contextualized in 11 Deployment Sites (DS) with 13 Validation Scenarios covering the heterogeneity of the AHA-IoT needs. These results also show a clear path for improvement, as well as the importance for standardization efforts in the ever-evolving AHA-IoT domain.We thank to all the people who have participated in the development and validation of AIoTES.     FUMEPOC: Early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in smokers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Currently is not feasible using conventional spirometry as a screening method in Primary Care especially among smoking population to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in early stages. Therefore, the FUMEPOC study protocol intends to analyze the validity and reliability of Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer as simpler tool to aid screening and diagnosis of this disease in early stages in primary care surgery.</p> <p>Methods / Design</p> <p>Study design: An observational, descriptive study of diagnostic tests, undertaken in Primary Care and Pneumology Outpatient Care Centre at San Juan Hospital and Elda Hospital. All smokers attending the primary care surgery and consent to participate in the study will undergo a test with Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer. Subsequently, a conventional spirometry will be performed in the hospital and the results will be compared with those of the Vitalograph COPD-6 test.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>It is difficult to use the spirometry as screening for early diagnose test in real conditions of primary care clinical practice. The use of a simpler tool, Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer, can help in the early diagnose and therefore, it could improve the clinical management of the disease.</p
