A Rate-Splitting Based Bound-Approaching Transmission Scheme for the Two-User Symmetric Gaussian Interference Channel with Common Messages
This paper is concerned with a rate-splitting based transmission strategy for the two-user symmetric Gaussian interference channel that contains common messages only. Each transmitter encodes its common message into multiple layers by multiple codebooks that drawn from one separate code book, and transmits the superposition of the messages corresponding to these layers; each receiver decodes the messages from all layers of the two users successively. Two schemes are proposed for decoding order and optimal power allocation among layers respectively. With the proposed decoding order scheme, the sum-rate can be increased by rate-splitting, especially at the optimal number of rate-splitting, using average power allocation in moderate and weak interference regime. With the two proposed schemes at the receiver and the transmitter respectively, the sum-rate achieves the inner bound of HK without time-sharing. Numerical results show that the proposed optimal power allocation scheme with the proposed decoding order can achieve significant improvement of the performance over equal power allocation, and achieve the sum-rate within two bits per channel use (bits/channel use) of the sum capacity
Exploring the use of learning communities of practice within a degree apprenticeship through university and partnership provision while incorporating the use of inclusive principles and practice
Learning communities and communities of practice (CoPs) are important aspects of the degree apprentice (DA) experience within higher education. DA programming differs to mainstream higher education programmes as the apprentices are ‘employees’ that spend most of their week working within an organisational setting. DAs in the United Kingdom are formally set 20% ‘off the job’ learning hours that include tuition as well as designated studies directly related to a job roles’ knowledge, skills, behaviours and values.
This presentation looks at how concepts of learning within communities and inclusive practice have been nurtured within a DA programme to develop sustainable curricular and extra-curricular elements. As a part of ongoing research being undertaken using the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice in Business to Business Sales DA, this presentation focuses on how academic providers and partners work together to deliver inclusive tuition while considering the importance of learning communities of practice that must consider participation of employers and professional organisations. Inclusive practice includes requirements outlined in the new university strategic plan and in the Apprenticeship Standards. Emerging findings from recent apprentice/student questionnaires have indicated that apprentices, especially Generation Y and Z (McCrindle, 2014), are interested in how the providers might incorporate their insights about inclusive practice into their studies and professional practice.
The presentation includes reflections from the current Programme Leaders from Consalia Ltd. and Marketing Branding and Tourism and the past Programme Leader (Education) to consider practical recommendations that could be adopted within the learning communities of practice from a Sales area of practice perspective and deliberates on what more needs to be done to create a dialogue that promotes inclusion and diversity (CIPD, 2022) within the university contex
Theoretical studies of the local structures and EPR parameters for Cu center in Cd(NH)(SO) single crystal
The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters ( factors and
the hyperfine structure constants , ) are
interpreted by using the perturbation formulae for a ion in
rhombically ({D}) elongated octahedra. In the calculated formulae, the
crystal field parameters are set up from the superposition model, and the
contribution to the EPR parameters from the admixture of -orbitals in the
ground state wave function of the Cu ion was taken into account. Based
on the calculation, local structural parameters of the impurity Cu
center in Cd(NH)(SO) (CAS) crystal were obtained
(i.e., {\AA}, {\AA},
{\AA}). The theoretical EPR parameters based on the
above Cu-O bond lengths in CAS crystal show a good agreement with

Is the Number of Giant Arcs in LCDM Consistent With Observations?
We use high-resolution N-body simulations to study the galaxy-cluster
cross-sections and the abundance of giant arcs in the CDM model.
Clusters are selected from the simulations using the friends-of-friends method,
and their cross-sections for forming giant arcs are analyzed. The background
sources are assumed to follow a uniform ellipticity distribution from 0 to 0.5
and to have an area identical to a circular source with diameter 1\arcsec. We
find that the optical depth scales as the source redshift approximately as
\tau_{1''} = 2.25 \times 10^{-6}/[1+(\zs/3.14)^{-3.42}] (0.6<\zs<7). The
amplitude is about 50% higher for an effective source diameter of 0.5\arcsec.
The optimal lens redshift for giant arcs with the length-to-width ratio ()
larger than 10 increases from 0.3 for \zs=1, to 0.5 for \zs=2, and to
0.7-0.8 for \zs>3. The optical depth is sensitive to the source redshift, in
qualitative agreement with Wambsganss et al. (2004). However, our overall
optical depth appears to be only 10% to 70% of those from previous
studies. The differences can be mostly explained by different power spectrum
normalizations () used and different ways of determining the
ratio. Finite source size and ellipticity have modest effects on the optical
depth. We also found that the number of highly magnified (with magnification
) and ``undistorted'' images (with ) is comparable to the
number of giant arcs with and . We conclude that our
predicted rate of giant arcs may be lower than the observed rate, although the
precise `discrepancy' is still unclear due to uncertainties both in theory and

Lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling in Sr2RuO4
The lattice dynamics in SrRuO has been studied by inelastic neutron
scattering combined with shell-model calculations. The in-plane bond-stretching
modes in SrRuO exhibit a normal dispersion in contrast to all
electronically doped perovskites studied so far. Evidence for strong electron
phonon coupling is found for c-polarized phonons suggesting a close connection
with the anomalous c-axis charge transport in SrRuO.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures 2 table
Emergence of intrinsic superconductivity below 1.178 K in the topologically non-trivial semimetal state of CaSn3
Topological materials which are also superconducting are of great current
interest, since they may exhibit a non-trivial topologically-mediated
superconducting phase. Although there have been many reports of pressure-tuned
or chemical-doping-induced superconductivity in a variety of topological
materials, there have been few examples of intrinsic, ambient pressure
superconductivity in a topological system having a stoichiometric composition.
Here, we report that the pure intermetallic CaSn3 not only exhibits topological
fermion properties but also has a superconducting phase at 1.178 K under
ambient pressure. The topological fermion properties, including the nearly zero
quasi-particle mass and the non-trivial Berry phase accumulated in cyclotron
motions, were revealed from the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillation
studies of this material. Although CaSn3 was previously reported to be
superconducting at 4.2K, our studies show that the superconductivity at 4.2K is
extrinsic and caused by Sn on the degraded surface, whereas its intrinsic bulk
superconducting transition occurs at 1.178 K. These findings make CaSn3 a
promising candidate for exploring new exotic states arising from the interplay
between non-trivial band topology and superconductivity, e.g. topological

Ferromagnetic semiconductor single wall carbon nanotube
Possibility of a ferromagnetic semiconductor single wall carbon nanotube
(SWCNT), where ferromagnetism is due to coupling between doped magnetic
impurity on a zigzag SWCNT and electrons spin, is investigate. We found, in the
weak impurity-spin couplings, at low impurity concentrations the spin up
electrons density of states remain semiconductor while the spin down electrons
density of states shows a metallic behavior. By increasing impurity
concentrations the semiconducting gap of spin up electrons in the density of
states is closed, hence a semiconductor to metallic phase transition is take
place. In contrast, for the case of strong coupling, spin up electrons density
of states remain semiconductor and spin down electron has metallic behavior.
Also by increasing impurity spin magnitude, the semiconducting gap of spin up

On the Insignificance of Photochemical Hydrocarbon Aerosols in the Atmospheres of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets
The close-in extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs) reside in irradiated
environments much more intense than that of the giant planets in our solar
system. The high UV irradiance strongly influences their photochemistry and the
general current view believed that this high UV flux will greatly enhance
photochemical production of hydrocarbon aerosols. In this letter, we
investigate hydrocarbon aerosol formation in the atmospheres of CEGPs. We find
that the abundances of hydrocarbons in the atmospheres of CEGPs are
significantly less than that of Jupiter except for models in which the CH
abundance is unreasonably high (as high as CO) for the hot (effective
temperatures K) atmospheres. Moreover, the hydrocarbons will be
condensed out to form aerosols only when the temperature-pressure profiles of
the species intersect with the saturation profiles--a case almost certainly not
realized in the hot CEGPs atmospheres. Hence our models show that photochemical
hydrocarbon aerosols are insignificant in the atmospheres of CEGPs. In
contrast, Jupiter and Saturn have a much higher abundance of hydrocarbon
aerosols in their atmospheres which are responsible for strong absorption
shortward of 600 nm. Thus the insignificance of photochemical hydrocarbon
aerosols in the atmospheres of CEGPs rules out one class of models with low
albedos and featureless spectra shortward of 600 nm.Comment: ApJL accepte
Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the Local Universe
We study the morphology and star formation properties of 159 local luminous
infrared galaxy (LIRG) using multi-color images from Data Release 2 (DR2) of
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The LIRGs are selected from a
cross-correlation analysis between the IRAS survey and SDSS. They are all
brighter than 15.9 mag in the r-band and below redshift ~ 0.1, and so can be
reliably classified morphologically. We find that the fractions of
interacting/merging and spiral galaxies are ~ 48% and ~ 40% respectively. Our
results complement and confirm the decline (increase) in the fraction of spiral
(interacting/merging) galaxies from z ~1 to z ~ 0.1, as found by Melbourne, Koo
& Le Floc'h (2005). About 75% of spiral galaxies in the local LIRGs are barred,
indicating that bars may play an important role in triggering star formation
rates > 20 M_{sun}/yr in the local universe. Compared with high redshift LIRGs,
local LIRGs have lower specific star formation rates, smaller cold gas
fractions and a narrower range of stellar masses. Local LIRGs appear to be
either merging galaxies forming intermediate mass ellipticals or spiral
